i was just wondering, who do you think are some of the most underrated members of bands? like somebody who is amazing but overshadowed by maybe the lead guitarist.
my picks:
Drums- Brett Powell(the human abstract), Martin Lopez(opeth), Marc Allen(finch), Josh Freese(a perfect circle), the rev(avenged sevenfold)
Bass- Juan Alderete(the mars volta), Arif Mirabdolbaghi(protest the hero), Jordan Tuscan(august burns red)
Guitar- Brian Leppke(bleeding through), Garrett Zablocki(senses fail)
Vocals- Brandon Saller(atreyu)

me and my friends have said that their drummer must be really good. maybe some others don't realize it because of, like you said, the lead guitar.

Actually, when you say underrated, the first thing that crosses my mind is one certain California punk rock band: X.
Hell, their music is hella cool, but still no one seems to care about or know them!?
More Fun in the New World was even nominated by a Brazilian magazine as one of the 100 Best Rock Albums ever (it ranked #37).
Does anyone around here know X but me and Activision?

I Love X. Saw them in '83. Such a great show. I have to disagree with the Brave New World quote though. Telling people about X and referring to that album is tantamount to failure. Los Angeles and Wild Gift are the shining moments in the short career of this great band.

everyone always talks about how great maynard and danny are but I think many fans overlook Tool's guitarist and bassist. From a composition and musicianship standpoint, these are 2 of the best. Maybe not the most technically impressive but both men truly understand music theory and how to compose a real piece and not just slap a song together...something that is pretty rare with modern music.

Oh holy hell.... will anyone please mention Alex VanHalen?!?! Probably one of the best drummers in one of the most influential bands of all time, and yet COMPLETLY overshadowed by big bro Ed. C'mon! I will agree with one previous poster on Dethklok in the fact that its one guy (Brendon Small) who writes and performs all the music, but I cannot agree with the other previous poster about Buckethead deserving more credit than he has gotten. If anything, he is OVERrated. I love the Bucket, don't get me wrong, but if you stand back and really analyze his style, you see lots of repitition and lots of fundamental progression at its base level. He is fast, yes, but don't get confused kiddies! I think Alexi Laiho is pretty good too, but again it's the bucket syndrome. Fast is good, but style is GREAT! Ponder..... maybe it's just me.......

Buckethead is underrated for exactly what you just said. Everyone says that he just has speed and no style. You have to dig deep into the Buckethead collection to find some of his great songs. Listen to his accoustic songs or he had 1 entire CD of slow songs. He has released something like 50 cds of music and most people just listen to Jordan and say yeah hes good but he just plays fast. Jordan is cool but its not even that great of a song compared to his others.
Btw you cant ****ing see his emotions because he is wearing a god damn mask. I hate it when people say he puts no emotion in to his writing. Use your ears not your eyes.

It may be a stretch, but I would say Stevie Ray Vaughan. He's not often mentioned along side some of the more mainstream rock guitarists (Eddie, Slash, Clapton, Page), or even the guitarists mentioned in this thread (Satriani, Vai, Malmsteen, Buckethead), but as far as emotion goes, he blows the doors off just about anyone (or did, before his untimely death). I love Satriani and Vai, but sometimes I feel like I'm listening to a guitar clinic rather than music - the raw feeling just isn't there.

Brian May...and all of Queen for that matter. Listen to some of Brian's solos. They might not be the fastest solo you've ever heard but its got the right vibe and is cool to listen to. And remember, He didnt use all this fancy stuff guitarists use today. He basically had his guitar, 3 Vox amps, a wah-pedal, and a home made thing made by John Deacon.

Little-known fact: When Van Halen first started out, Alex was playing guitar and Eddie was playing drums. Eddie couldn't handle some of the beats they wanted for their first songs, so the two switched instruments. And so began the Van Halen we all know today :)
Another piece of useless Van Halen trivia: Back in the day, the guys used to goof off alot at practice. Michael Anthony would get really ticked at all the wasted time, and would just stand there plucking his low E string on the bass. Bum...bum...bum...bum....and this created the intro to Running With the Devil :)

James Iha and Jimmy Chaimberlain of Smashing Pumpkins. Jimmy really has some drumming that can really compete with Dave Grohl's. Iha well, just listen to the new Pumpkins and look at the new rhythm kid, I've seen so many vids on YouTube of him ****ing up songs.
I also have to say Marty Friedman of the old Megadeth lineup, he's really not appreciated for his guitar solos. He's better than Kirk Hammet ever was/will be.

Are you kidding?? My favorite band EVER! I don't think they're the "best" band ever, but they're definitely my favorite. Los Angeles is possibly the greatest punk rock album ever written, and it's easily in the top 5 records of all time.

I Love X. Saw them in '83. Such a great show. I have to disagree with the Brave New World quote though. Telling people about X and referring to that album is tantamount to failure. Los Angeles and Wild Gift are the shining moments in the short career of this great band.
Short career? They're still touring.

Tom Dumont, guitarist of No Doubt. On Tragic Kingdom, there are better guitar parts than you would think. Also, before he was in No Doubt, he was in a heavy metal band.

For one, Paul McCartney, while widely regarded as the greatest bassist of all time, is, perhaps because of that, underrated in everything else. Excellent drummer, guitarist, pianist, etc. Nowhere near the elite top of the heap in any of the other instruments, but very good, with great sound and feel, and overlooked nonetheless.

Elliott Smith is underrated but still got some attention

Most underrated has to be Dragonforce. They have definately gotten better live so you can put that thought out of your head. David Macintosh has to be one of the most talented drummers i've ever seen. As a matter of opinion I really like the way that their lead vocalist sings. Check out the solo in Valley of The Damned, pretty good.

Okay I'm not gonna say he's underrated because he's not but he's still an awesome guitarist..... Synyster Gates.

david gilmour, hes a great guitarist, one of my favorites
also buckethead. nobody knows about him, and if they do, its from guitar hero
also peter frampton kicks ass frampton comes alive is like one of the best live albums ever
I can't say it enough, but the bands Dredg and The Mars Volta do not get the appreciation they deserve.
....Also this:

...is awful. Now I don't mind dragonforce, because their studio stuff is pretty impressive but if they can't PLAY their own stuff.......I mean come on.

Try this guy --
awesome bassist
very capable keyboardist
klller harmonica player
one of the all-time great rock singers
amazing songwriter
Played with landmark blues, jazz and rock groups. Including the original "super trio," and one of the original jazz fusion groups, Tony Williams Lifetime.
Who is he? JACK BRUCE!! The forgotten member of Cream.

Did you mean "underrated?"
Well -- underrated and underappreciated are very close in my mind. And I think Jack's post-Cream work has slipped way below the radar. Even in Cream I don't think he got the credit he deserved, but esp. for the stuff he's done after I think he is one of the most underrated musicians around.

two words...Tenacious D
Jack Black and Kyle Gass are both VERY VERY underestimated when it comes to their musical abilities, probably because they are a comedy band but if you actually listen to their music they are very good. not to mention Jacks voice, wow.

Ehhhhh kyle is a great guitar player and jack has a great voice but thats it, jack cant play the guitar for sh*t and they usually have other people like David Grohl play the drums on there albums, so i guess in a way they are underrated ...

Trey Spurance, Trevor Dunn, Bar McKinnon and Danny Heifetz are all pretty underrated. The only person who really gets any credit for Mr. Bungle is usually Mike Patton, but these guys definately held their own on their instruments and they also helped contribute to the craziness that is Mr. Bungle too (especially Spurance and Dunn, who have about as much writing credit on Mr. Bungle albums as Patton, if not more).
I'd also have to go with Eddie Hazel - Maggot Brain is amazing and ridiculously underrated. Link Wray too.
And since the OP didn't specify rock music, I'm going to have to go with Sotaro Tojima, one of the most underrated video game composers. He created one of the most underrated video game soundtracks (Super Castlevania IV's) which is remarkably atmospheric for a 16-bit system. Not to mention that he also contributed the best song to "Circle of the Moon" but most Castlevania fans don't realize that "Awake" (widely known as the Catacombs music) was composed by him and not Michiru Yamane (who didn't work on the soundtrack for "Circle of the Moon" at all, actually).
Actually, I'd say pretty much every pre-Michiru Yamane Castlevania composer is horribly underrated because
1. Most of the old Castlevania themes are being reused in the newer games and fans don't realize it since they don't play anything pre-Symphony of the Night.
2. Most Castlevania fans think Michiru Yamane composed the songs mentioned above, when that's really not the case.
3. Pretty much every Castlevania song is attributed to her, even though she hasn't worked on every (or anywhere close to every) game in the series.
4. A lot of the old songs that haven't been remixed in newer games are totally unknown to people who got into the series from Symphony of the Night. "Chromatische Phantasie" is awesome, but nobody knows of it since nobody's played Belmont's Revenge.

Steve Cropper, Matt Murphy, Donald Dunn are all underrated
