Two big reasons for asking this.. first the most obvious:
- I'm sure many of us don't want to pay $30 for a mic if we already have a perfectly good one that came with our 360.
- I'd love to be able to play an instrument and sing the vocal part at the same time.. don't make me break out a mic stand to do this..
Anyone with confirmed information, it would be great to know!

Now, how would you do the tambourine hits with the headset?

Yeah, I need to use my headset too because I have a dance choreography planned for most of the songs.
LOL :D

Yea I figure you could sing with it, I don't know why it wouldn't work, but most songs have cowbell/tambourine parts where you have to hit the mic to the beat when you aren't singing, usually during guitar solos.
So even if you could just use the headset (and I'm not positive you actaully can) you wouldn't be able to hit it to the beat and would lose points during all those sections of each song.

you guys have a good point.. about the tambourine anyway ;) I just figure since I spent the last 8 years as the lead singer of a touring band I could pull off both... if not for points just for the fun of doing it.

Though I don't think it's confirmed. I don't think there is actual assigned notes or anything for the cowbell or tambourine. I think you use it freestyle as an option to keep you busy if you're bored during solos.
They said 3rd party mics all work, so I'd assume you could use the headset without penalty. You don't have to do the tambourine or cowbell, they're just there if you want them.

I think headset use would be great for back-up singing. Like if "Fight For Your Right to Party" was a song in the game, it'd be fun for the whole band to sing the chorus and other parts like that.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the headset would NOT be usable for Rock Band vocals because it doesn't have enough fidelity.

I recall also seeing this mentioned previously as well, at least in regards to the Xbox Live headset. This does not preclude the possibility of a regular USB headset being usable as the mic if standard USB microphones are indeed supported.

in the Q&A posted here one of teh HMX guys said you could just use a USB mic if you wanted. He said the mic they will be selling won't be much different.

specifically:
[HMX] DanT: Q: >|Kitty|<: In Rock Band do you all attachments to play or could you play like single modes as like if you only had a mic you could play a single mode where you only sing and vica versa?
A: You definitely don't need all the instruments. You can just use the guitar controller you already have and play as a guitarist, or use your USB microphone that you already have and sing with a band. The most fun is with four instruments, but we realise that not everyone can buy four controllers for whatever reason.

This is good news.. I have the logitech mic that comes with Karaeoke Revolution already. You can probably get them used cheaper than the official one too.

That's because the Xbox Live! headset doesn't have 4 quads per channel.

See this microphone here? This is Hi-Fi... high fidelity. What that means is that it's the highest quality fidelity.
So basically you get twice the bass with the TK-421 microphone, and now you got yourself a system here...
Well i don't know if i'm gonna need all that bass...
Oh, i think you need all that bass...

From an IGN article yesterday:
"Electronic Arts has confirmed that the guitar from the 360 version of Guitar Hero 2 will work with Rock Band, and you can also use your Xbox Live headset as your microphone."
Although the headset information is possibly a misunderstanding by either EA or IGN, as Harmonix seem to have been saying the opposite so far.

So, if that's the case, what would the microphone actually cost? I'll pull a Justin Timberlake and get the guitar, game, drums (if cheaper than $200) instead of the bundle, but for simplicity sake (and probably availability sake too) will just get the bundle of joy.

I was about to say something along the lines of "You'd be beating the **** out of yourself if it came to the tamborine parts" oh well

Since the microphone isn't going to be detecting motion or impacts upon it.. wouldn't you just be able to blow into the mic in bursts for the tambourine/cowbell parts to simulate tapping? The microphone won't be able to tell the difference...

Doing themath for buying them individually makes the bundle a steal. Microphone here I come! LOL!
Now, if I could only find Jonathan Davis' microphone stand....
