Everyone wants to drum, no one wants to sing.
That is going to be the major flaw with online play.

I thought the same thing at first, but then I stopped, sat down, thought about it and really, more people than you think will sing. Karaoke is still a big thing. And now, playing online, there's no pressure of a large crowd watching you sing. There will be plenty of female volunteers (girlfriends, wives, etc.) that will give the vocals a shot as well. Just my .02 worth. ;)

That might happen...........but not because "singing sucks".

I want to sing...I just worry about waking my daughter since I will mostly play after she's gone to bed. Hoping it doesn't sound weird if I try to sing softly...

I can agree with you that a lot of people are excited about drumming (me included) but I think everyone is going to want to try out every aspect of Rock Band at some part, and I don't think it is going to be that hard to find a singer at all.

I will personally be attempting to drum and sing at the same time. We'll see how that goes.

I don't think many people are going to focus solely on singing. People are going to want to play drums and guitar more than anything. I see a lot of bands having to force people to rotate instruments and vocals.

Until everyone gets drunk, and then they'll be fighting over the vocals. :p

The title was misleading. I never meant singing sucks, just for this game. Everyone likes to sing along when a song they like is on, but for this game people are going to focus on instruments. You can see this by looking at how much more popular guitar hero is then karaoke revolution.
For the record I love vocalists, my favorites are
Chris cornell (soundgarden days)
layne staley
maynard james keenan

Funny, My wife ONLY wants to sing.. She hates trying to play GH.. Done it twice at the most. But Loves Kareoke Rev.. Problem is.. She has a hard time finding a song worth singing on KR, She is a rocker not a popstar. So she is incredibly excited at the prospect of RB. And don't think she is the only one because they don't post on GH and RB boards. I'm sure there is talk among the Kareoke community as well.

Although I'm a singer/guitarist, I can't wait to play the drums on this game. It'll be the first good american music game with drums, but this whole game is gonna rock.
What would be cool if they put some kind of mini-games in the game somehow...

HAHA! I'm am sooo stealing that.
As far as singing goes as a solo career in the game, I'm not overly interested. But 4 player Co-Op having singing is a must.

You know you can play any of the 3 instruments AND sing at the same time? In real life and in the video game
Look at bands like underoath and atreyu for proof that singing while drumming isn't impossible
And more bands than I can even list sing while playing guitar........
And some bassists sing while they play too
Really its not an issue... if your fake band cant find a singer.. then go out and buy a microphone and register yourself as the singer and Xinstrument

Backs up exactly what I said earlier in the post. My wife is the same way. She thought GH was okay, but would rather sing. That's the beauty of RB. Play what you like.

I think the vocals are just going to be iffy. I mean, you need to know the song pretty well to be able to sing it, unless you're some amazing improv karaoke master

The Drummer from The Band was the one who sang The Weight, and that song kicks ass.

Unlike Karaoke, this looks to have a pitch bar on where your voice needs to "reside" during each note. At least that's what the demos look like to me. My guess is you could probably go into training mode and listen to the song and learn how it sounds first. No?

Assumable the different difficulties would allow you to get used to the songs.

From what I've read, I don't think you need to have the correct pitch, especially since a lot of rock songs don't have perfect pitch anyway.
Is the pitch bar what that white bar is? If they game made you keep the correct pitch, it would get SO boring. You couldn't harmonize at all! You'd have to sing it the exact same way every time.
Maybe what you're talking about is the amount of time you have to hold your note? I'm really hoping.

If pitch, doesn't have to be exact, isn't in the game, then what's to stop you from just talking out the words? There were two things going on in the videos I saw (specifically the GameSpot one as it held the screen the longest). One was the green stuff in the background to indicate how long a note needed to be. Think more vertical here. Then, there was a line that was horizontal that went from top to bottom, which I would imagine, indicates pitch? Let me see if I can find a video.

Found one.
<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/NQmDa9jolmg"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/NQmDa9jolmg" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>
Start at 1:15 seconds in...
Yup. There's the "hit bar" on the left.
The length of the note bars are shown as discussed.
Then look at the height of those bars. See how they go up and down to the pitch?
Then the words are below it.

The green bar that runs vertically on the left side of the screen shows how well each of the instuments are doing.
The horizontal green moving bar just under the lyrics is the score multiplier meter just like Guitar Hero.
The other bar under the lyrics, to the right of the multiplier, is no small in this video, that you can barely see it, but I notice it only moves once. It instantly jumps to about half way. That could be either used to show your pitch, or show how far you are untill you can freestyle (a confirmed part of the singing gameplay).

No, no, no. the lyric bar up top. On THAT bar the left vertical line is where you need to hit your note (similar to the fret buttons). Watch the top bar. Listen to her sing. You'll see what I mean.

Yeah, that 3rd white bar is the new "star power". I know it's an older video, but it should still be the same.

What I still don't get, is why it doesn't look the same as the ones for the other instuments.

Obviously, the level of the lines indicate the pitch, but how does it indicate the pitch you're singing? Does the sparkly arrow move depending on your pitch, separately from the scrolling pitch lines?

Basically it's so you just don't talk the song. You actually have a variance in your voice that it picks up. So, if you want to sing the song in a deep voice, you still would have to have different notes to hit along with the lyrics. You could do the same thing in a high voice. No, you don't have to sound like the original, but you need to sing the words correctly with variance in your tone. Does that make sense?

Yeah, but it makes me wonder how they can measure that, since it would be relative to he previous tone of your voice. It would either have to constantly monitor your tone from one word to the next, or it would use the very first part of the song for reference.
In any case, we do know that in order to do well we can't sound as bad as Peter Moore. If the game can tell the difference between that girl's good singing, and Moore's obviously bad singing, I'd say the system is working well.
