I have Xbox Live, my friend doesn't. Can we play on Xbox Live together?

I'm here with my friend and we're trying to figure out how to play on Xbox Live with another two random people online. We're in the same house playing on the same system.

If it's possible, do we both need Xbox Live gold accounts to play?

Nope, he can play as your guest under one account. Don't need two.

You can play on live but someone with a live account has to be logged in and your friend needs to be on the same console signed in as guest. have your friend join your player match (live account must join the band first) then he will have the option to choose to log in as guest. he wil then appear as yourgamertag[1].

Someone should put this in an FAQ if it's not

I have a question in response to the guest on live. Why is it when you have a guest, even the owner can't talk online anymore. I've had the problem when I play with my wife and when people join. Any body know why that is?

When using guest accounts online (X360) voice chat does not work for that console.
