I have a 3 year old CRT HDTV that I play RB on, so I figured that I wouldn't have any lag. The first day I got RB, I was missing notes while drumming. Not badly, but I couldn't hit long note streaks consistently. After joining this forum and seeing all the people that had faulty drum kits, I was a bit spooked that mine were doomed. I got to messing with the lag, and only upped it to 5ms. This made a HUGE difference. I can nail rolls on In Bloom and The Train Kept Rolling on HARD without dropping a note. I'm glad I didn't jump the gun and return my perfectly working set, because knowing my luck the new one would've been FUBAR. Anyone else playing with a lag setting??

I have a 1st generation SXRD. When playing everything but drums, I use the default rear projection setting without problem.
I'm apparently a short-bus drummer, as I have to manually calibrate for drums - I think I use 10/75 for the drums.

I can set my lag back to 0/0 and nail everything but the rolls. Could be that I'm not fast enough on the sticks, and maybe I'm cheating by upping my lag setting?

Samsung HLP503W 50" DLP (3rd Gen) 720p
Panasonic SA-HE100 DTS 6.1 Receiver (Dolby Digital enabled in game)
+70/-25
Not sure why the -25, I might just have a slight tendency to jump the gun a little. Haven't had any video lag problems on this system in the past, but used the calibration tool on drums. In the first one, I moved it till the white dot sounded like it was clicking into place, on the second one, I tried to hit the green drum pad so that I couldn't even hear the clicking noise over the sound of me hitting the pad. Seems to have worked, my accuracy got much better once I got used to the new timing.

32" sony bravia LCD. Haven't touched the lag settings and everything is fine!
To those using 0/0, are you playing the game in Stereo through your TV, or using Dolby Digital via an amplifier? When I got the game, I had to set the lag to something like 55/10 to get things to work right. But I have a 42" Sharp Aquos TV for the picture and an optical link to my amplifier for the sound. I have fiddled with the settings enough to be fairly convinced that any mis-timed notes are due to my own errors rather than because of lag. I've all but completed the guitar solo mode on Expert (one song left - curse you GG&HT!) and am plodding through on drums without too much trouble.
I briefly switched the amp into stereo while playing last night and there was definitely a timing difference when compared to the calibrated Dolby Digital setup.

Yeah, I've just used the setting for a DLP tv. I didn't really know that you could check stuff like 50/50 or 55/-25 though.
I also am using the Dolby Digital setting and are using a optical 5.1 surround sound system.
I can't notice any lag, I miss notes but I believe it's because I'M missing them, not due to lag.
I'll try to see if I can set it any better than the default DLP setting.

I've got:
PS3
Optical into my Sony Receiver
40" Sony Bravia LCD
I've set it to the standard LCD/HDTV setting (I did it almost two months ago so I don't remember) and never looked back.
My Sony had the lag details in the manual (think it was 8ms or something), and the optical on PS3 tends to create lag as well, so there you go... At any rate, the only problems with my playing are me, and not the lag.

You're not calibrating TV lag. You're calibrating the lag between the TV's video and whatever you're using as the speakers (which may also be the TV). So even if you're using the same TV, and using it to play the sound also, if you're using an HDMI cable, and some other guy is using his composite lines, your lag values may be different.

On GH3 I don't need to calibrate lag - will this mean I won't have to for Rock Band?

With my PS3...
...when I'm hooked up HDMI to my Aquos, I use the default LCD settings.
...when I'm hooked up component to my Pioneer rear-projection, I use the default rear-projection settings.
Both work fine for me.

That all depends. *Probably* not, but Rock Band has tighter timing on expert mode than I remember GH3 having... also is your GH3 guitar wired or wireless? What bout your RB guitar? Wireless tech introduces lag.
As for my settings, I have a plasma and go with the plasma settings.... which seem to be close enough. I did the manual calibration and didn't notice enough of a difference for it to matter.

Kenwood Dolby Digital 5.1 receiver via optical (toslink) for audio

Interestingly enough, I had to calibrate lag for GH2 with my HDTV setup, but not for Rock Band.

Phillips 42" LCD 1080p (5ms response time) with PS3 through HDMI
When I first got the game I didnt even bother to set up the game for lag because I had no guitar and had no clue that it could even be an issue. Playing GH3 in circuit city I discovered the horrors of lag callibration. People had the TV sec anywhere from 40ms all the way to 98ms for lag and nobody seemed to know what was the correct setting. But over in the Bestbuy, the RB setup just plain worked perfectly, never even a question of lag.
When I got home I checked it out and found that I could set the game for my HDTV but also calibrate for my TVs response time, Afterwards playing the game (vocal only since I have no guitar) I found my score improved, but couldnt tell if it was from practice or not but it did seem very accurate.
Of course it seemed incredibly accurate even before I calibrated it.

42 inch rear project Mitsubishi / Yamaha receiver
0 video/ 45 audio
I never had lag problem with any of the other rhythm games except GH3 (what a piece of crap that game turned out to be) but I was having a bit of trouble at first and did some calibration. What I ended up with was positive audio and negative video and I thought, incorrectly, that this made sense. After reading some tips on calibration I realized I was just jumping the gun when calibrating and ended with 0 video lag, which makes sense because I never had lag before, and 55ms audio lag because of the 5.1 decoding which also makes sense, it's not a high end receiver.

hey guys, i was just screwing around with these options in the past few days....I'm playing on a 42" panasonic pz700, X360 HDMI straight to tv, and I've gotten values for both settings ranging between -10ms to +50 or 60ms...anyone with a setup close to this have a good opinion as to what's worked well for them?

I have a DLP TV and don't notice lag issues when playing guitar or drums with the lag correction left in CRT mode. I do, however, see a delay to the arrow on vocal parts.
The vocal lag goes away if I set the lag to DLP, and I can get better scores that way.
BUT... with the lag correction set this way, there is clearly an issue with the game picking up other inputs: It will miss random guitar notes and even tamborine beats, in particular for beats that are very close together.
I've seen other threads suggesting that post-processing of Dolby and Bass Boost introduce problems, and I've seen these in practice myself, but I was wondering if anyone else has this issue of needing different lag correction for guitar and vocals?
This makes coming up with a perfect setting for band play impossible. Is it just me?
PS3 to Hitachi 42" plasma
Video HDMI to TV
Audio Optical to 5.1 surround receiver
Never set lag, seem to be OK but I always blame misses on myself. Question
What the best way to check lag to confirm your setup is ok?

I have at an LCD in the bedroom that needs to be manually calibrated. I have an older rear projection TV in the living room that oddly works perfectly at 720p on the CRT preset; the TV is supposedly 1080i native, but is a total pain to calibrate at.
A suggestion I would give to people having trouble with calibration is to make sure that the video is going straight to the television avoiding any splits or switches. I took the game to a friend's house who insisted on plugging in through the DVR because the plugs were more accessible, it was a calibration nightmare. When I plugged directly to the TV, the LCD preset worked perfectly.

PS3 -> Harmon Kardon Receiver -> Hitachi 51" Rear Projection CRT
No lag issues.
My dad has a PS3 -> Sony Receiver -> Samsung 56" DLP and it had quite a bit of lag. The model he has upconverts everything to 1080p w/out exception and there was lag by default.
To fix it (and I would recommend everyone do this before calibrating) I put his tv into "game" mode that should turn off smoothers and filters that the tv runs before displaying the picture. I'd make sure to try that first, as once I put it into game mode there was no need to calibrate at that point. If you don't have a game mode just turn off any smoothing, DNR, picture adjustments or the like. DNR especially can cause problems I've noticed. Here's a synopsis of what Samsung DNR does:
"The Digital Noise Reduction (DNR) measures the incoming video signal and compares the information of each incoming frame with the information in the memory. DNR even repairs noise generated by bad cables and connectors. This superb technology deliver noise-free images, any time from any source."
That's time you don't want your tv wasting on a rhythm game.

Panasonic 34 inch widescreen. I always have had RCAs running from the TV to the house stereo. If you use surround sound or at least a receiver, you don't have to change any settings. No lag, everything is perfect. However, if I use the audio straight from the TV's speakers, it does lag. Hope this helps everyone.

I turned off the DNR on my tv like terRize said to do, and it did seem to help just a little bit, but i can still notice the lag on my DLP tv just a little bit. Its tuff trying to get through the solo's at points. Does anyone have the settings they set in manual calibration? I have a 71' DLP tv set on 720 or w/e.
