How do I know if my guitar is broken?

Hi all! Im very sorry indeed if there is another thread on this but how can I know if my guitar is broken? When i play it gets stuck on one note and I cant strum or anything! This usually happens when i run out of batteries but I put some rechargables (which seem to not work or something) in and it still had this problem... is my guitar broken and do I need to replace it?
