We’ve seen some complaints from PS2 users about their consoles not initially recognizing Rock Band, failing to boot, or not loading at random places in the game.

Sony recommends using their Auto Diagnosis tool (http://www.us.playstation.com/support/ps2/hardwaresystem/default.html) to resolve this issue; this should help with disk read errors in the older “thick” PS2s and the newer slimline PS2s.

Rock Band is on a dual layer DVD, and if the Auto Diagnosis tool does not resolve your issue then we believe this problem is caused by a misaligned laser which has trouble refocusing to read data on the DVD’s second layer. If you’re experiencing this issue contact Sony to have the laser replaced. The slimline PS2 has a one year warranty, and if you’re within this period they’ll replace it for free. If you purchased your slimline PS2 more than a year ago (or your old model PS2 more than 90 days ago) you’re not covered by their warranty, but they will still fix the problem for between $45 and $65.

You can visit either http://www.us.playstation.com/support or call +1 (800) 345-SONY

Thanks to wesjett08 for the tip.

Cheers

now i do understand that the lens can get dirty at the same time i disagree that this is the problem since by looking through the forum's i see that no one is having problem's with other game's. I would also like to add that now my rockband game has a perfect circular scratch as if the laser is rubbing against it, iof this is the problem then it is because the disk is tto thick just wondering if we will get any response about the size issue . I love the game but now i am scared that it will ruin my slim ps2 so iw ill not be playing it anymore. If anyone at rockband can tell me if this is the problem(size of disk issue) i have played the god of war 2 game wich too my knowledge is the only other dual layer dvd disk for ps2.also my ps2 is 3002 version slim .

I too was having PS2 playing issues. I had rented the game from Gamefly, and the actual disc looked really good, only a few minor hair scratches that usually don't affect game play.

However, when I reached "Don't Fear the Reaper" by Blue Oyster Cult, it really began to skip and eventually freeze up. Also, when I tried to play the song by "I Get By" by Honest Bob, the song won't begin before it freezes up. So, I had Gamefly send me a replacement game disc. This one works perfectly now!

I noticed that both the above songs would have the laser reading near the very outskirts of the DVD. For FYI, I have a PS2 slim.

this is complete crap. i bought the bundle for ps2 tonight and i am having the same problem. took the disc back and exchanged it for another and it still doesn't work. i have the newer slim version of the ps2. tons of people are having this problem. every other game that i own plays fine.

EA needs to either stop selling them or fix the problem.

I agree this is crap. I have been going back and forth with sony and EA rock band co about this. EA states that it is sony's fault they are the ones that said this would play on their system. Sony states that it is not their fault what another company does. Sony should of specified this will not work on older systems. I am sitting here with $140.00 of equipement I can't even play with. I should of spent the extra money and got rock band for 360.
Does any one out there have any solutions for me?

We have a slim PS2 and a Wii. We decided on Rockband for the PS2 because my wife and I didn't want to have to fight over the Wii. They can play rockband and we can bowl on the Wii. Anyway, my kids opened up Rockband this morning and were excited to play their big christmas present on the PS2. They took it downstairs, assembled it and put in the game. They waited.....and waited....it just wouldn't start. What a bummer. Imagine how you would feel. At 13,8 and 4 years old....this was a real bummer.

After looking online for a while I decided to clean the laser and disc with alcohol. I used a Q-Tip with a slight amount of alcohol on the laser, and then for the disc I used a bit more. Then I wiped off the disc with a dry wash cloth (soft cotton). After that I took a the Q-Tip and cleaned the laser again. This time I also cleaned the area below the laser and anywhere I saw dust. Once I did that, I put the disc in. This time it started right up.

Hope this helps someone else! Good luck with it.

Rock Band 1 stopped working about a month ago, but every other game I have still works (even GH Aerosmith). I thought it was just a disc problem. But I got RB2 for Christmas today, and "The disc could not be read." Same problem that just started with RB1. It worked perfectly before. Also, we got Iron Man, Terminator 3 and The Force Unleashed, and they work just fine. Why just RB and RB2?

I too believe this is a bunch of bull. I too bought this game for my children for Christmas only for me to take it back to the store 4 times before they were willing to refund my money. Each time I had them place the game in thier game console to prove it did not work! EA should discountinue this game until they are able to fix the problem. This caused a lot of heartache for many of children this year for Christmas and I am very disappointed in the poor customer service and lack of accountability from Sony and Harmonix. I believe this should be a class action law suit.

I also agree this is a bunch of crap. We drove over 30 miles last night so my son could purchase RB2 with his WalMart gift card from Christmas. Needless to say it doesn't work. "The disc can't be read". We took it back again this morning and WalMart won't refund our money. We had to exchange it. The new one doesn't work either. Now what??? All his 40+ other games do though.

 I have the same issue with Rock Band that my son received from his aunt for Christmas. We are on our second set and still the same problem. The PS2 can't read the disk. Sony and EA won't take resposibility and continue point the finger at each other.

The problem with Rock Band lies in the PS2 even though the game is made for PS2 it won't work on some because they are not made to read dual layer disks. This game was made for PS2 and no one new that their PS2 was not going to be equipped to play a PS2 game. But Sony acts like its our fault because we haven't given up our PS2 for their new PS3 so one way or another they will try to force us to pay either for an upgrade $45 + tax and shipping the unit back and forth or buy a new unit. We shouldn't have to do either the game says it is for PS2 and we were given no warning that it may not work on some PS2's so it should work on all PS2's or someone should have to fix the problem and not the consumer. I have been reporting this issue all day to every consumer reporting agency I can find and am considering reporting the misleading sales practices to my state attorney general as well as the better business bureau on Sony and EA and I have contacted the local news media, they have a consumer reporter his name is John Matarese and if anyone else would like to give him more reason to investigate and report on this issue his email address is JMatarese@wcpo.com please tell him your story. Unless we as consumers stand together these companies will continue to take advantage of us and never right their wrongs.

Eric,

did this require taking the PS2 apart. I'm looking at mine to try and do the same thing, but I cannot see the laser. Looking for screws to remove. bit wary of doing this.

cheers

Okay, so i put my balls back in my sack and cracked open the PS2. There was a ton of dust built up over everything. I gave it a good blow down with a can of compressed air and that helped. The sticker that said "do not look at the laser" was a bit disconcerting, I've seen lasers accidentally burn holes in walls. But I got some isopropyl (sp?) alchohol swabs and some q-tips and wiped the console clean, and got a load of gunk off the laser.

Put it all back together and plugged it in. Halleluyah. DVD-Video now played for the first time. And most importantly, RockBand now booted up just fine.

Spent the afternoon rocking out with the wife, having a blast!!

Cheers Eric. You rock!!

My son just got the rock band for PS2 and the game did not play. The console was unable to read the disk. I'm a very upset customer and I have returned the game once already and still no solution. I will be very angry customer if I i have to go and buy a new console .... My son is upset and crying!!! Something should be done about this.

Hi all

First, excuse my english cause i'm french speaker lol but i'd really like to help you.

I'm a electronic technician and i found the problem... and solve it!!! The thing is that, as many of you said, the rock band DVD is double layer and the problem with the fat PS2 is that the laser haven't been set for double layer or is too tiered so it is not strong enough to get to the second layer.

So now the solution: get to this site: http://ps2repairs.amenet.co.uk/laser.htm only to look at the picture to locate the DVD potentiometer. They say to use an oscilloscope but you can do it without it. Simply turn the DVD potentiometer clockwise a bit than try your disc and repeate until disc load .

The explanation is that when you turn clockwise more powerfull is your laser but it's lifetime will be shorter. If you turn counterwise, it's lifetime will be longer but you won't be able to read double layer disk. And if you turn it too much clockwise you can burn your laser and it won't work anymore so try turning the potentiometer by little step.

I did it on my own PS2 and now it is working perfectly even guitar hero world tour is loading on it without problem.

I'm glad if I could help you and I'm not responsible for any broken PS2 but if you do it step by step you shouldn't have problem.

Good luck!!!

I have the same issue. I just got Rockband 2 today for Christmas. I previously owned the first Rockband, but it stopped working after a while. I figured it was an issue with the disc, but apparently, I was wrong.
I just put the disc in my PS2 slim and it won't read. It makes this weird scratching noise and then says "The Disc Could Not Be Read". This makes no sense, for any other game I put in my PS2, it reads. It will even read my old, scratched up PS1 games.
This is wrong. If we're going to be sold a game, it should be guaranteed that it work. I'm planning on taking the disc back to where it was bought so that we can see if it really is my PS2, but I'm very positive it is not.
So many people are having this issue, and I agree that EA should discontinue sales of this game until the problems are resolved.

We had the same problem Christmas Day, a lot of disappointment and unable to use the new drums, RB2 and GH5 with our slimline PS2. We cleaned the laser with alcohol, but it did not work for us. Using Cameleon's directions of adjusting the DVD potentiometer did work for us. We were almost to the point of buying a new unit, but happy to report that games are working fine now. Thanks for the info in this thread to resolve our PS2 problem.

My family's gratitude for all of you participants and administrators of this forum. My kids are smiling now! I already cleaned the lens prior to reading this. I can't believe cleaning the brand new dvd saves all the trouble!!!

I think all of this is just bull, to be honest. I honestly think that they should stop marketing the game until they have everything fixed. At least Guitar Hero was able to run smoothly as a new game in the market. I've seen so many defects wrong with Rock Band, it's not even funny. I thought it was just me, but I've heard a lot of people complaining about it. Looks like they took more time advertising the damn thing then actually work on flaws and defects. Sorry Rock Band, but you fail to compete with Guitar Hero, and that's why Guitar Hero will always be the best.

I bought everything for Rockband for my 4 kids to play together. You had to see their sad faces when nothing we did made the disk work. We went back and forth with New disks and used disks. I used a new disk and did all of the thing we read on this board. This is a brand new slimline PS2. I bought two of them for my kids and we never used this one. It's only a few months old! Alas, it's warranty is expired because of the time we actually purchased it. Not being cheap, but why should I pay to have my PS2 fixed to use Rockband. The fault lies in both Sony and EA,Anyone wanting to REALLY do something about this, e-mail me at knightryder7@hotmail.com thx.
