Not new, but an expanded drum set is a must. At least two more pads and a second bass pedal.

Either some sort of sax/horn/flute, or some sort of keyboard.
A sax controller wouldn't be too hard. Imagine this. Take the neck of the guitar. Remove most of the body.
Get a pinwheel a little smaller than a dime, attached to its stem with a little bit of resistance, so that it spins while you blow on it, but when you stop blowing, it stops spinning pretty quickly. Attach this to the whammy bar input from the guitar, or some other analog input (so the controller can communicate how fast the wheel is spinning -- how hard you're blowing).
Now you've got a gadget with five buttons and a blowing input. Treat blowing like strumming. Maybe have the on-screen note stream be horizontal instead of vertical.
Suddenly you can be Clarence Clemens, or Ian Anderson, or if they really extend their genres enough, maybe even Louis Armstrong.
(For keyboard, I figure they'd offer a game controller with a MIDI input that you could hook any old MIDI keyboard up to, plus sell a bundle with a cheap one-octave MIDI keyboard. That's all I can come up with.)

Keyboard, without question.
Something else to consider though- the success of this game (and Guitar hero series before it) will certainly spawn several similar games.
Look for people to be making games like Jazz Band, Funk Band, etc, in the near future...

I agree with this.Even if it were only an online option I think a rythym guitar would complete the band.

Keyboard. Just look at some of the songs already available, and how useful a keyboard would be.
Boston, the Who?... good keyboard songs. :)

The who
Led Zeppelin
The clash
all have 4 members Vocals/Guitar/Bass/Drums
why would you need more
i could see backup vocals for the guitarist or bassist but other than that theres not much more you can do

my question is that how is RB2 planning to survive, with already more than 90 songs released, and a full promised year of songs to go, how exactly are they going to sell that thing, they would need more than an extra intrument

Yes, I've been wondering for awhile just how long it will take for 'Country Band' or 'Country Hero' to come out as an expansion or new game.

If it was Classic Rock Band, I'd agree with you. Traditionally rock bands had 4 members, with a few exceptions.
The modern trend is moving more and more towards 5 or more band members.
Linkin Park, Korn (first three albums), Slipknot, Mushroomhead, etc.
You can list hundreds of 3 piece, 4 piece, 5 piece, or more bands.
With four instruments you are somewhat limited to catering to four piece bands (somewhat) but with more instruments you open up new avenues.

Eh, have 6 buttons. 3 for the left hand, 3 for the right hand. Then it's got basically the 6 main buttons that are on a real sax.
But a keyboard must come first!

They already have the capability to connect the 360 headset to the guitar/drums, so it would be great if they could just have scrolling words once in a while for backup vocalists. You know, the guitarist gets to yell parts of the chorus, or a good ole' "hey!"

Yowch, what did that piss in your cornflakes taste like this morning? (Nice sig too, lmao.)
I think the most creative answer thusfar is the Sax. I may not be afraid to Sing or play plastic Guitars and Drums but... plastic Sax?:o I SAY DO IT! :D
Keyboard... how do they simplify it enough to make it so you basically don't have to just learn how to play?
I vote for a Jug and Washboard!

Jeez, so simple but brilliant!
Close your eyes, imagine yourself as an observer of a 5 piece plastic instrument band...
this is getting ridiculous.

The easiest, and best way to solve the keyboard problem is: http://originalasia.com/images/stories/live/geoff-keytar-lg.jpg
