I just read impressions by the scorehero guys on GH3.. I wasn't REALLY excited about it before ( I was still going to buy it ), but now after hearing their impressions it went not only to must buy but.. I think I'm just as excited about GH3 now as Rock Band. Of course, rock band still has drums that will be megaton awesome.. but from what I read.. the track list sounds to be freaking amazing. This year shall be awesome for us rhythm game lovers. it shall be very interesting to see and we are lucky to live during a time like this =)

heres their impressions.. im curious to see what some of you guys think:

http://www.scorehero.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=19183

they start with the press release kinda thing, the posts after that are their impressions from a 6 hour playtest.

god, I wish we were in november!!

This belongs in the General board.

And GH3 better have a damned good track list if it's planning to compete with Rock Band at all. So no surprise there.

the way i see it,

GH3 has 4-5 awesome songs

Rock Band has 2 awesome songs

GH3 has 2 instruments

Rock Band has 4 instruments

GH3 has released double the songs Rock Band has

Rock Band has alot more to come

GH3 has 70 tracks to play(some DLC)

Rock Band has potentially thousands of tracks to play thanks to DLC

GH3 has single songs by bands

Rock Band has full albums

So far, gh3 is winning with the setlist, and RB is winning with features, but in the end i know RB would easily take both.

Here is my side:

Guitar hero 3 is their next step of desperation. Neversoft is getting desperate. All they're doing is wasting money on expensive masters. And they are LOADING the game with tons of little gimmicks that are just going to make the game more boring and frustrating after a while. They're making the game into a Mario Party game of sorts. They're making it into a "You better have friends or else this game is going to be boring as hell" kind of game. It's just getting repetitive. Rock band brings tons of new elements to the game. New instruments, online play, rankings, possible achievements, downloadable albums, everything that Guitar Hero doesn't! Now, I'm not trying to get you guys to not get GH3. I'm definatly getting GH3 myself, mainly because I'm a Guns N Roses mega-fan, and looking forward to facing Slash.

But, back to my point. They're making the game into a huge gimmick. Reminds me of Mario Party. The first twenty minutes of the game is amazing! But then it just gets repetitive. They're making it into a party game just so that you can use half the new features of the game.

And besides, Scorehero is hyping GH3 more than anyone is. They're probably getting paid to say it. They most likely are just trying to bring Rock Band down by saying "Guitar Hero Three is so freakin' amazing!!"

im going to buy both, but yeah guitar hero 3 knows they can't compete with the gameplay and DLC of rock band, the only thinkg i think that puts them on the same stage as rock band right now is if they drop some zeppelin or ac/dc on us, anything else they reveal doesnt mean much to me personally, just my opinion though, now with that said i will buy both, im just looking foward to rock band right now way more

Stone Temple Pilots - Vaseline
Blue Oyster Cult - (Don't Fear) The Reaper

In summary,

Overall rock band IS EASILY the better game , however... my individual tastes are not pleased AT ALL by rock bands soundtrack so far , and w/o a great soundtrack a great rythm game can't be much fun

Overall GH3, is obviously inferior in every aspect but the sound track (in my opinion) , and quite honestly... soundtrack matters most in games like these

GH3 and rock band have equal numbers of songs I like , and hate , however GH3 has 2 songs I LOVE , and love is a far greater thing than like... thats the point at which I actually listen to a song on my own time.

To be the better music game to any one individual the said individual must actually enjoy SOME of the games songs

I as of right now:
- Have decided I am without a doubt buying guitar hero 3

- Am unsure about purchasing rock band... do I really want to pay $60+ for a game with 0 songs I actually want to play? I may change my mind depending on future announced songs

Point is really , these are MUSIC rythm games and obviously , supposing someone was completley indifferent to the songs on each game , rock band would win ... I however just am not even close to liking rock bands song list... don't flame me for saying that... its just the truth about the way I feel about rock bands song list so far, they can throw fancy ass mega-popular band names and popular as hell songs at me left and right and it won't mean a thing to me.

tman, i somewhat agree with you at this point but, RB has been pretty quiet about their songs so far, they've only released half as much as GH3. and once you see the final GH3 setlist THATS IT. with Rock Band you will see new stuff coming out every week. with Thousands to Seventy, you will easily find more you like in rock band than gh3. GH3 to me is like Halo 3. I will buy it eventually, but i'm not going to be one of the people waiting in line at best buy for 2 weeks straight. I pre-ordered rock band a few hours ago after i saw the gamepro article.

For me GH3 is like .... one of those games where I go to the store 1st thing when I wake up to buy

Rock band is one of those games you said like halo 3 , you might get eventually

Really... if rock band can impress me with some newly announced songs , or announced DLC songs further down the line I most certainly will buy it... rock band said they would be making lesser known bands famous... which is a good sign imo , because so far they have been rolling with uber popular bands that I don't really care much about... with the exception of rush and the ramones... however they picked bad tracks for those two imo

Yeah I really don't see why they're making it a competition. I mean I'm more excited for RB but it's not like I want GH to die just because HMX doesn't make it anymore. If anything, look at the past couple years beginning with GH1... How many master tracks did it have other than bonus... One? Not even one? I don't even remember.

GH2 had several because it was a more well known game.

GH3 Has 70 percent masters including bonus songs

RB has 2 downloadable albums and tons of master tracks..

What I'm getting at is this type of game in general is starting to get the credit it deserves from artists and companies. Granted they see there's money in it now, but still. Both franchises have a very, very bright future now that the industry knows hmx/activision are doing their damndest to stay true to the music and true to the fans.

Thanks for confirming... Yeah, 80's is altogether a different animal to me though. I'm just pretty happy with the way they've been able to shape the games and become so well known from out of nowhere basically. Well known enough to work with some amazing artists and get some amazing music for us.

PROPS TO LITTLE STEVEN as well, we haven't really heard much about his efforts but I'm sure he's a big help.

Maybe a stupid question : Why legally have they been forced to do covers on any song?

Disclaimer: I don't know any of this for a fact, but this is what I've gathered.

It's much cheaper to license a cover version of a song than the master track. An artist might also take issue with these games. They could be afraid of a video game degrading their music so they might refrain from letting their original version be tampered with.

Some instances have nothing to do with legal issues though. If you played GH: 80s, two of the masters fade out at the end which is a first for Guitar Hero, and it's a little awkward. With cover versions, you can alter the songs to fit the game perfectly.

Also, some tracks are too old for their master recordings to be of any use in the games.

When Guitar Hero was starting, it had no reputation - making covers the most financially sensible and viable option. Going into the next game, a couple masters were obtained as the series was growing. Jane's Addiction and Primus were probably glad to have their masters in the game. The latest GH game (80s) has more masters than ever before as the Guitar Hero reputation keeps building.

It just makes sense that Guitar Hero III will see many masters as artists are catching onto the idea of the game and how cool the concept is. Some big guns are anxious to get their stuff in it now.

Rock Band is luckier to have the MTV-owned Harmonix developing it though. Beyond the reputation of Harmonix, its connections with MTV and record labels give it an unprecedented level of access to obtain these master tracks that some artists were never releasing before.

Neversoft might have trouble keeping up on their level of master tracks. The Guitar Hero concept can only take their master-track-seeking so far. I don't see how they could ever obtain the level of masters as a company owned by MTV will get.

or some OPETH! which I have a strange feeling that GH has already.. :\

GH has the power not to worry about screaming vocals and insane double bass drums...

but RB still has tonsss of potential. but remember, it's all opinion on the songs.. (though some are distinctly more fun to play than others), I'm not a huge fan of Nirvana's "Nevermind" (well.. not anymore at least), but I'm sure that alone will sell the game a bunch.

I'm buying both, but Guitar Hero's track tickles my fancy a little bit more. For instance, La Grange, Welcome to the Jungle, Paint It Black, Barracuda, Through the Fire and Flames, etc. Now, for Rock Band, I do like Tom Sawyer, Enter Sandman, Mississippi Queen, Paranoid, and Don't Fear(The Reaper).

GH3 looks pretty good, i mean its still at the heart of things the same old guitar hero most of us know and love. Theyve also got some killer tracks. I'll buy just the game eventually.

Rockband looks so much stronger, has unique gameplay, great DLC, and is coming from the people who actually started the gh craze. look at these forums, we have constant fan interaction with HMX employees. The Guitar Hero forums are a mess. A little interaction with the developers goes a long way for me.

You guys, the only reason you want GH3 so much is because they're just throwing out a ton of bands. They only have 16 songs announced. Once they start announcing all the good bands, you can imagine how amazingly huge the game will get once they announce the other 24, plus the bonus songs and downloadable tracks. Hell, you never know if they are even going to change the song number, they may add even more songs!!

40 songs is a bunch considering you can play them on 4 instruments. And not every song in the game can be catered to your likings. Obviously your a fan of lame arena rock so you can just buy Gh3 and have fun playing Rock You like a Hurricane.

You act like Harmonix is threatened by your lack of love for the songs.

Quoted from that other site: **- One of the biggest gameplay changes was with the system for hammer-ons and pull-offs. Rather than being based solely on the timing of the notes, Neversoft is able to program certain notes to be strummed or hammer-ons. The general guideline is, if a note is strummed on a real guitar, it will probably have to be strummed in-game. When a note is a hammer on for a real guitar, you'll probably be able to do a hammer-on for it in-game. This provides a much more realistic feeling to the charts. **

WTF??? Changing the core gameplay will NOT be in Neversoft's best interests. People will have to learn how to play this way, and to make matters worse, all the comments in that thread are by the people who run that site! =o They're like:
"SO OMFG!!! THIS IS LIKE SO AWESOME IT IS THE BEST!!! GH3 KICKS ASS IN SooooooOOOooOOOooOO MANY MANY MANY WAYS!!! I CAN'T WAIT!"
Followed by:
"YEAH! I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN! BUT DID YOU SEE THIS...."
X.x it's the most blatantly biased look at a game since John Romero stated that he loved playing Daikatana even though the code for the game was nearly nonexistant! This news, to me, is nothing but bad vibes for Neversoft... and a bad taste in my mouth for ScoreHero! =S

benjamin

That is not changing the core gameplay in the least.

MrtyMcfly
07-30-2007, 02:46 AM
It doesn't seem like it's changing too much. But for the amateur's sake, I hope they aren't putting hammer-ons and pull-off's on Easy and Medium mode. Most casual players who don't play guitar, cannot pull those off, no pun intended.

It's true, a lot of people don't understand the concept or can't discern which notes you can do it on.

They'll probably just strum all the notes. You can do that on Easy, and it's how I was when I started.

I heard rock band is getting 40 songs on the disc. Period. with other songs being DLC only

If thats the case then seriously... I say **** this game... just **** this game...

(Unless by a miracle they pull out some songs I like a ton within the like... 20ish remaining) (But I really doubt it)

I'm usually humble, and don't like to call people out on forums because it's childish and pointless. But Tman, you're ignorant, self-centered comments about music, and other people's opinions and preferences have littered too much of these forums.

Now with this post that I quoted above, you should seriously be banned from these forums. In every thread you proceed to bash other people's musical preferences, and now Rock Band because it's not all about metal. I love the genre as well, but be open to other things please!

You're obsession with metal, and only metal, has caused you to become narrow-minded, and musically handicapped. You have no appreciation for music, but simply just for one genre.

You may have your preferences and opinions, that's fine. But calling people out and saying their music sucks, and trying to say that The Who sucks?? Seriously dude, wtf. I mean, I don't listen to The Who, I know maybe 3 songs by them, but I can still appreciate their music and talent.

Your ignorance will be the death of you, and I really feel bad for you. Lighten up, and learn something about respect.

You don't like Rock Band because there's not enough metal? Then fine, don't buy it. And proceed to leave our forums because you have no business being here. Go back to the GH forums since they "have your heart". We can do without you.

Trust me Mrty, I agree. But thats in one ear and out the other. Been said soooo many times to the music snobs on the boards but those types of people don't like to listen to anybody. tmans obsessed with making this into a competition between GH and RB, and for some reason he thinks his opinion is held in high regard or that pushing his music will make everybody listen to him.

Too bad nobody cares.

And besides, Scorehero is hyping GH3 more than anyone is. They're probably getting paid to say it. They most likely are just trying to bring Rock Band down by saying "Guitar Hero Three is so freakin' amazing!!"

ScoreHero is independent of the Guitar Hero franchise, and supports Rock Band and Harmonix. In case you forgot (or didn't know), Harmonix donated $2000 to help ScoreHero buy a new server when the crowds started getting too big. There is a good relationship there.

They were just excited to share their experiences (within their NDA) from a paid vacation to Neversoft testing a full version of GH3. They are the same people who are excited for Rock Band... ScoreHero has over 50,000 users. It is pretty easy to understand why Neversoft/Activision would pay several thousands of dollars to get that kind of exposure.

As far as hype is concerned, I'm still way more excited for Rock Band. Online with up to 3 others, the addition of vocals/drums, avatar customization/creation and a World Tour mode spell "AWESOME" for me. Plus I think the setlist is arguably better.

These guys play GH since the first demo was out. They are probably the best players out there. They lead the x360 scoreboards. You can say they have a DEEP understanding of the game. They played GH3 for several hours.

COME ON !!! THERE'S NO WAY THESE GUYS COULDN'T FIND A SINGLE DEFECT IN A GAME STILL IN DEVELOPMENT.

You have to be REALLY stupid to believe it's half as good as they are painting it. Besides, they are changing a MUSIC game into a smash-buttons-to-win game. They look at the game from a completely different perspective than hmx does. They care MORE about pushing the buttons than really feeling like playing a song.
When I first heard of GH I didn't want to play it, I thought: "come on, this is stupid, is button smashing". But when I first played I felt like "man, this is awesome, I feel like I'm playing the song" and that's exactly what Neversoft is taking away from the game.

Several journalists (not only one) at E3 reported that the note charts are kind of off. Notes that actually go up are being represented by going down on the game and vice-versa, and now this guys from scorehero comes and say: "wow !! I play guitar in real life and the note charts are the most perfect wonderful piece of work I've ever seem". That's bs.

5 new frets for tapping on the difficult solos, THAT'S GAMEPLAY IMPROVEMENT. Shaking the wammy bar like a stupid monkey just because the other guy threw a "special power" at you it's crashing a game into pieces. Can someone here imagine a guitar duel where a roadie turns off your amp and you have to run to turn it on again so you don't lose ?? How about Satriani kicking Petrucci's balls so he can't play ?? That would be awesome, right ? Obviously not.

Well put Vichnaiev, I think a lot of GH veterans (who aren't getting paid what to say) can agree that GHIII is too far off to the arcade style, as opposed to a real music rhythm game with appreciation of what it is to play music.

Much like Dance Dance Revolution really has nothing to do with dancing lol

i totally agree with you. there is NOTHING new in the new gh that isn't downgrading the game. they are taking harmonix's work and making it worse, while harmonix is taking their own work, adding two new instruments, and making everything a hell of alot cooler/better.

I'm buying it, I'm playing it (after I five star every song on every instrument of RB). But I'll stay away from the new feature. I mean, the songs are great and the coop is still there, so it should be fun.

GH3 started to lose me when they took out Clive Winston.

I know, it's something really minor, but it still rubbed me the wrong way for some reason. Same with a lot of other minor details.

Judy no longer looks like the girl who "punched a reporter in the face because he asked about her hair and clothes but not once about her music."

Little things like that. It's like Neversoft is completely missing the spirit of Guitar Hero.

If they have songs in which I press buttons and strum in order to imitate playing a guitar then it captures the spirit for me.

Ok so I'M ignorant because I'm not excited about the game having a bunch of songs I have heard too many times and grew sick of long long ago?

Thats fine if you never turned on a radio and heard the songs in rock band but personally I am just tired of most every song in the game since long ago, its k... I will at least rent it if it keeps up this way

I mean its good songs but good songs that got old (for me anyway)

ok?

Edit: also I have NO OBSESSION with metal sir

I like everything , thing is I want some refreshing .. good songs not the ones I have heard 50 million times , had they chosen different songs for every confirmed rock band band... I would be as excited as the rest of you

I don't see how you can complain at all. you will be getting more than enough songs via DLC.

now if harmonix was cool (wink wink) they would give away one free song a week.

cause if they accepted that as an alternative they would have no reason to *****. These types of people like to *****. thus they will always find something to ***** about.

tmanrocks, if you've already posted 415 times on the Rock Band forums, I think it's safe to say you've wasted all of your time here if you're not going to buy it. Renting Rock Band doesn't even make much sense considering all of the peripherals involved. And with DLC, renting would be such a waste.

I find it funny that you think that them accepting a logical answer would stop the *****ing.

These are the kind of people who troll to live, you could cut off their limbs and they would learn nose typing.

Why , yes I have wasted my time :D

The 1st... 350 or so of that was making suggestions and agree/disagreements with other peoples suggestions and obviously my suggestions have all failed for rock band along with many other peoples. :(
