View Full Version : Wii missed opportunity?

I know that there has been an unofficial confirmation that Rock Band will be released on the Wii, but don't you guys think that it is a big missed opportunity that the game will initially noly be released on the PS3 and Xbox360? Guitar Hero 3 will release for the Wii immediately and will thus likely have a 5-6 months head start. If you look at the sales record of the PS3, Xbox360 and Wii the last outshines the others totally, therefore there is a huge market left which will initially only be tapped by GH3. To me it seems like a strange choice marketing wise, as the huge Wii market seems especially susceptible to a "fun" game like Rock Band. What do you guys think?

well, alot of people get the wii because its cheap, and rock band is not. probably the biggest audience for the wii is children under 13, as the 360 and ps3 have alot of "hardcore gamers" games, and a $200 price tag would be a turn off for parents.
that's just my take on it, at least.

They have said that they flat out want to do it, but I'm sure they have their reasons. I'm sure it's a lot harder to port a game from PS3 or 360 to Wii than it is to go PS3 to 360 or vice versa. That and I'm sure they'd have to find a way to make the accessories work on the Wii (probably connect the remote to the instruments).
I hope it's on it's way, but yeah, this might hurt Rock Band sales for Wii-only owners since Guitar Hero 3 is definitely coming soon.

Yeah, and besides that, what about DLC? Don't know how well that works on Wii.

Well, the Wii does have Gamecube ports on the top; 4 controllers, 4 ports. Nintendo could probably utilize the GC ports for RB, or all 4 RB controllers could act as Wiimotes, seeing as the Wii multiplayer capacity is 4 players. But then, since the controllers would all be wireless, the price for RB Wii would at least 60 bucks more. And, like you said, you could put the Wiimote in the controller like the GH 3 Wii controller concept, but I dunno. RB Wii would be more probable for me because I don't have either a 360 or a PS3, but I've been saving up for a 360 for RB(plus I've been wanting one since it released) because I knew it was definitely not coming out for the Wii and still, if it does, I probably won't get it because I'm already in a RB band and I need a 360. :)

I think it's because Nintendo needs to get their online and storage act together first. A major part of Rock Band is it's downloadable content, and it's online play. Without it, you might as well not bother launching it on the Wii.

I was a big Nintendo fan until I sold my wii 2 weeks after launch.I saw where the machine was headed.Just a marketing product nothing for the hardcore. This is how I see it.Rockband is hardcore and deserves nothing less also hard drive helps with downloadable content you know add friend codes and **** and you got the reason why Rockband will not launch on Wii.Thats all I got to say If you seriously still are holding on to Wii with hopes of Nintendo bring you some rock solid hardcore you have another thing coming.

Metroid Prime 3, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and Mario Kart Wii beg to differ. Sure, maybe Nintendo won't have the same "hardcore" offering that the other consoles have, but it'll always have the option between casual and hardcore games. Nintendo's simply expanding their market.
But with that said, I also believe the Wii won't be getting Rock Band right now thanks to the limited storage capacity and the crippled online system. Luckily, it looks like the online is getting better with actual titles being released that take advantage of the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. But the storage space is still an issue, though it could be resolved in the near future, especially with Nintendo launching it's "Wii Ware" channel soon.

exactly. i went to best buy not too long after the wii came out and got the last one left, and rsv for the 360. i played twilight princess and wii sports for maybe 10 minutes each, got pissed off at the controllers and the games and played RSV. i haven't once touched my wii for about 6 months. ha.. touched my wii... but seriously.

I was ultra excited for the wii, in fact i thought it was going to be far above the other 2 systems. But after trying it i was pretty unimpressed. I really thought the controller would be sweet but it's just gimmicky. Now i just have to decide if i want a ps3 or a 360 for rock band and im leaning towards 360

I bet my 360, Rock Band, Rock Band drums and Rock Band Strat that there will be a Wii version and it will get some of the DLC for free already on the disc.
Well... i only bet it if im write :P

theres also the possibility of expansion discs. not everything has to be from dlc.

True, but i'd much rather have DLC than discs.
For example, not that I care, but 67 dollars for 30 songs (8-10 of which were just boring as hell and I will never play again) is kind of redonkulous for GH 80's. They would have been cheaper if downloadable im sure.

logistics pal. I doubt they would - think the money they save cos they DONT have to put it on discs. Harmonix would be rolling in it if PS2 supported DLC and people had online - so it would have never had to release Rocks the 80s in shops. Cut the middle man out (the shops), and no trucks carrying them, no manufacturing costs = CHA CHING!

Exactly. There are some real good songs on 80's but.. i beat the entire thing in like 2 hours, and that was with playing co-op in between. I failed only play with me the first time through. Thats kind of a waste of 67 bucks when I could have got a game that would take weeks or more to finish.

As a Wii owner, I was slightly upset at the fact that this game was not coming to the Wii. In the end though it is a good thing. The Wii lacks a lot of things that Rock Band has. First and foremost online capabilities, the Wii has one online game out as of now, and will have a 2nd by next week. Both of these games operate off of friend codes, which isn't terrible, but isn't good either, and they are not the best online systems in the world, now as a 3rd party game Rock Band would not have to use friend codes, but with no other online games to go on, I don't know how getting online with Rock Band would be. Also the Wii's internet is free, so I don't know how good it would be, especially with lag issues.
The 2nd problem also has to do with online. As far as the DLC goes, the Wii would not be able to handle that at all. I don't know how big the songs will be in file size, but the Wii's internal memory is only 512 MB. Now there are SD cards you can use for extra memory, the largest being 2GB but they are only for saving and holding data, things on it cannot actually be accessed if you want to play using it. For example if you have a Virtual Console game saved to it, you must transfer it to the internal memory to be able to play it, I would think this is how downloaded songs would work too. And with no announcements of an external hard drive anytime soon (only rumors and speculation), the Wii would have a lot of trouble in this aspect of the game.
Now those things aside, sure you could release a Rock Band for the Wii, with slightly toned down graphics, with online, or maybe without, and certainly no downloadable content, and it could be a good game, but when compared with the PS3 and the 360, it just doesn't stand up, and this is why I'm not even going to try and wait for the possibility of a Wii release, I'm getting myself a 360 and rocking out to Rock Band how it is supposed to be played. (There is no way I'm missing out on downloading Who's Next and Nevermind)
