View Full Version : Drum mod gone horribly wrong

So I did the CigDangle mod a few weeks back and the pads obviously weren't sticky enough and peeled off. I purchased some rubber cement and was able to glue 3 of the pads down successfully. However on the red pad all the gray rubber on the drum head kinda bubbled up and stretced (pic below)! Any savvy DIYers know how to get this back in shape??

Hit it with a mallet 20,000 times.

OH my. Is there just air under that you think?? I wonder if you use like a credit card and try to push the air out to the side??
This is exactly why HMX needs to find a good fix and endorse it so that things like this don't happen and we void our warranties. We are all just trying to protect our drums since they are not as durable as they should be, but it's all trial and error at this point. *sigh*

How certain are you that the plastic drum surface itself has not cracked. I recently did the neoprene pads and I put them under the gray skins. Every one that I pulled off revealed a cracked drum. Which was nice. Quality. Very high quality.

How do you pull up the gray skin?

k what you wanna do is take of the entire top part of the pad. Like you doing the penny mod. when u have that off there are tiny screws at the side of the rim holing it down, unscrew all those and fix it, the screw it back in and put the top back on.

Once I removed the small retaining ring screws I just pulled the gray rubber pad off. I cut the neoprene to size and used a high quality 3m spray adhesive to re-assemble the pads with the neoprene underneath. Of course I repaired all of my cracked drum heads before I put it back together.
Really not to hard.

I know this thead has been dead a while but... this happened to me last night (didn't do enough research before I did a mod :). This is my second (purchased) set and I'm a DIY guy anyway so I wouldn't sent it back if something went wrong anyway.
I "warped" two of my pad covers but ended up removing all 4 of them. You don't have to take apart anything to do this. You just need a flat-head screwdriver and push it under the ring to pull back the edge of the rubber cover. If you want to try to save these be careful not to tear it - I had no troubles. They should peel right off. One of mine took some of the underlying felt whereas the other 3 didn't take any.
