I'm a huge fan of both of these genres, and their crazy time changes. Both genres are full of difficult, and seemingly random, notes and fills. Many of the bands also have some sort of solo for each instrument. There is already a category in Rock Band for Prog, so I don't see why there shouldn't be anymore of those types of songs.

Bands that come to mind immediately include:

Dream Theater (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNp4tMcpM10) (Prog)
The Mars Volta (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2ayKK8E7gc) (Prog)
Battles (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpGp-22t0lU&feature=related) (Math)
At the Drive-In (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VdWHaKF1khs) (Prog)

There's also the song, Trippolette (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxp1U6SJ4eA&feature=related), from Guitar Hero 1. While there were no vocals, it was not playable by conventional means, and I would like to see it released in a playable form without hacking GH1. It's kinda Proggy.

I would include Ozric Tentacles (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f26hh-dsESA), but they're not much for vocals. Also, I don't really expect you guys to sing The Mars Volta and the Battles songs, they were just examples.

I love Math rock. Drive Like Jehu's "Here Come The Rome Plows" could also work. As far as At The Drive-In goes, I would like to see One Armed Scissor, Transatlantic Foe, or Napoleon Solo.

wow At the Drive-In would be AWESOME to have in rock band, but they definitely aren't a prog rock band. Battles would be cool, but there's not much for vocals usually.

Yes - Yours Is no Disgrace, I've Seen all Good People:Your Move/All Good People, and Roundabout!!
Rush - Natural Science, The Trees, 2112 Overture
Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet, Lazarus, Blackest Eyes
Mr. Bungle - Sweet Charity, None of them Knew they were robots, Egg
King Crimson - The Great Deciever, Fallen Angel, Lament
Genesis- Dancing with the moonlit Knight, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Dance on a Volcano

And that's just a start. Unfortunately alot of great prog is not known well enough to ever have a realistic shot of being included.

Allow me to modify your list a bit:

Yes - I would totally be up for playing a 20 minute song, but since that'll never happen I'd go with anything from Fragile, the best of their more accessible albums.

Rush - No more, please. At least not until Harmonix can get their hands on some masters. And even then I can only take so much Rush; though I would like to play Working Man.

Porcupine Tree - I second Blackest Eyes, and raise you This Is No Rehearsal, Prodigal, Dark Matter and (if length weren't an issue) Anesthetize, which happens to feature Alex Lifeson.

King Crimson - So many good songs, almost none of which would be suited for this game. Frame By Frame might be a good fit, though once again if length were not an issue (or the fact that it prominently features instruments that would be impossible/stupid to integrate into a game) I would kill to play Starless. Literally. Just tell me who needs to die to make this happen.

I also second The Mars Volta and ATDI.

Bump.

Keep this thread alive, prog fans!

Some more suggestions:

Mastodon (arguably proggish) - Sleeping Giant, Blood and Thunder, and their most progressive song (aside from the 13 minute Hearts Alive), Capillarian Crest.

Voivoid - Nothingface album.

Anything by Dream Theater, Symphony X or Pain of salvation and I'd be very, very happy!

I'd be happy with any yes songs! But I disagree about Rush, but I dont expect more anytime soon. Too many great bands out there with 0 songs! Although I do want the masters,.

definetly mars volta and at the drive in. maybe viscera eyes and arcarsenal because any other song by the mars volta would be too long. or wax simularca.

yea i agree. they've had too much rush. 3 songs is too much because bands like zeppelin and acdc and pink floyd and the beatles have 0 songs.

I'd love to see "Impulse" by An Endless Sporadic (one of the bonus songs on GH3). It seems pretty proggy to me and it's fun to play. Not sure how it would be for a band though, especially with no vocals.
