I know I'm probobly not the only person who's wondered about this, or even made a thread about this. I just haven't found any threads pertaining to this issue. If anyone can point me in the direction of one, I'd be happy to read it.
Anyway, the issue in my mind is about the drum kit. I like the direction it's going in thus far ( if that's even visible to the public, seeing how it may be a prototype, or that it is a prototype ), but there's just one thing. Anyone who plays a drum kit in real life will know that the hi-hat hand crosses over the snare hand. Some people may not do it this way, but I can't say I've seen anyone do it any other way.
Will there be a setting in the options menu that allows this kind of switch to be made?
I mean, I can understand how people who aren't real life drummers would not appreciate this particular setting as a default, so I would at least think of it as being optional ( or in the game for that matter ). Sorry to have wasted wind on anyone, but that's just a big concern for me. It won't make or break the game, but it may slightly change the enjoyment I get out of the game.

I don't understand the problem, if the left-most pad is a hi-hat, and the one to it's right is a snare, you can just use your right hand for the high-hat, and the left hand for the snare. problem solved...right?
edit>> Whoops, nvm I watched a video and know what you mean now. hmm it sounds like a good idea, but it might mess up the rest of the drum track... I don't know...

This has been discussed, and before you get your hopes up, there probably won't be one.
On a real set, the hi-hat is raised above the snare, so it's pretty easy to cross over. However, the RB drums aren't made like that.
If you want to get a feel for what it may be like, try playing your snare/floor tom with crossed hands, and see how long it would be comfortable for. When you speed up, your arms are going to be in an uncomfortable position, banging on each other, and it would be a terrible experience.

weve seen from the videos that the current set up is fine. i think its done that way so your right hand is playing the hi-hat still and left hand the snare, as you would be doing if you were playing with the arms crossed.

Yeah, since I drum myself, I thought about this too. But I have to try it myself to know for sure if it's annoying or not.

I've also pondered this, because I was thinking about comfort with crossing over.
I've also thought about height. Because some people are bigger then others. Could there be some thing to raise or lower the pads to a comfortable setting?

I've wondered the same thing as a drummer in real life. When playing standard eighth-note patterns, it would be awkward to not cross over, unless they move the hi-hat to the extreme right pad, and then it is like playing eighth-notes on a ride, I suppose.
The problem with that, though, is for any songs that have sixteenth-note patterns where you typically hit the snare with your right hand. In that case, you'd want the hi-hat to be to the extreme left. I'm not sure how many, if any, songs on the list have sixteenth-note hi-hat patterns, and that very well may be a consideration the Harmonix team makes when selecting songs.
I'm also assuming that there won't be any open/closed hi-hat distinctions either.

That question's bothered me for a while since I'm a drummer, and I know that the drums aren't adjustable. From the videos, it seems like playing left handed is the way to go on the hi-hat, which I don't mind, since I rarely practice that and it'd be cool to be somewhat ambidexterous.
But yeah, it'll take quite a while to get used to that. My arms just feel awkward thinking about left handed drumming.

In my opinion, as a drummer, I think they made the right choice for their arrangement. You still get the same sensation of a hi-hat/snare combo when your hands are facing the left side and you are playing with the correctly corresponding hand. True, it won't be the exact location as on a real kit but I really don't think it should bother anybody too much.

As long as I don't have to play the hi hat with the left hand .... So, yeah, I don't have to play crossover, but the hi hat has to be the second drum or even third or fourth drum, so that I can play it with the right hand.

This would mean that all of the songs have to have 1/4 or 1/8'th note hi-hat patterns since there's no way to use the right pad for the hi-hat and then cross over for the snare on the left like you would for 1/16'th note or some sort of triplet hi-hat beat.

Now that I think about it, with the way the pads are leveled, it would actually make it more difficult to play south-pawed. I guess I just wasn't thinking when I made that post. It would certainly be a different case if the leftmost pad were higher than the pad beside it. Who knows what exactly the drum peripheral will look like when it comes out, but if it's almost the exact same as what they show right now, then the crossover option won't be necessary.

hi-hat left, snare left center, tomtom right center, bigger tomtom right, bass pedal.
that should be the basic setting
some songs will probably be switched up
all depends on what your playing
it doesnt really matter which is which your just gonna be looking at the screen and hittin whatever comes up. it doesnt really matter where the drum is placed
the only way to fix the problem is if the drum controller changes into a more realistic drumset and i doubt that will happen

I wish like heck I could just hook up my Roland TD-10 kit directly to the game and sync my pads to each trigger through the MIDI interface. That would be the ultimate immersive game experience, but then again, I could just plug in my iPod and play the songs directly, I suppose.

i think it would be cool if they made an expert drum add on. it would be the same colors only free moving live a symbol pack. i dont know what do you all think

I was thinking along those same lines last night. It would be cool to have an "expert" drum kit, and then the standard one. However, I don't think harmonix would take it as far to make two seperate drum kits for this game. Would be nice, though, it would.
