View Full Version : Where's the punk?

So, I've seen a bunch of thread's about what music to be put into the game (also about one thread with the topic of punk), and I'm feeling kind of left out here. Where's all the punk? And no, I don't mean MCR, Taking Back Sunday, Weezer, or any of that crap. I mean, stuff like Bad Religion, Circle Jerks, Agent Orange, Bad Brains, etc. The real stuff. And before you come here telling me "Punk's too easy, it would not be fun to play." Well, I don't know about you, but I myself am in a punk rock band, and it's not as easy as you think it is. For instance, if you take a real fast, punk song, I guarantee you that it'd be the hardest song to drum for in the game.
But let's say, that the bands that I listed don't all have songs in which each instrument has a part that'd be fun to play. Well, okay, I can see that arguement, however, you just need to look harder, and find the songs that do that. Some of the newer Bad Religion is hard to play on all instruments (especially the years from 2002 - present). So, yeah, I think we need to get some real punk in that track list! So, those who agree with me, give your own list.
Here are a couple of songs that I think would be great for the game:
Bad Religion - Cease [The Gray Race]
Bad Religion - Before You Die [New Maps Of Hell]
Bad Religion - Sorrow {Process Of Belief} (It's a radio hit, so everyone can enjoy it)
The Circle Jerks - The Crowd [Wonderful]
Agent Orange - Breakdown [Living In Darkness] (Song for the bass)
Agent Orange - No Such Thing [Living In Darkness]
Agent Orange - Bloodstains [Living In Darkness] (Because everyone knows it)
Bad Brains - At The Movies [Rock For Light]
Bad Brains - I Against I [I Against I]
Bad Brains - Sailin' On [Bad Brains]
And if you want the drummer to get injured
Bad Religion - Submission Complete [New Maps Of Hell]
Now there's my list. There are better songs from the bands, but that's my list of songs that'd be appropriate for the game. So, agree? Like to add to it? Well, speak up!
Also: First post. Cool.

Black Flag, The Germs, The Minutemen, Minor Threat, and early Husker Du are all excellent punk bands. (I love Husker Du but I wouldnt consider anything post Zen Arcade "punk".

Gotta go for Misfits, Exploited, Sex Pistols, and although some may not throw it in there with punk I would love to see some Reel Big Fish...and a trumpet as a new instrument lol:D

I suggest Dead Kennedys - Riot. I'm not real listener to music, but it sounds like it'd be fun to play.
Anyway, nice list there dude. I've really got to hear Submission Complete now that it's going to injure drummers. I've gotta try it.

The Dead Kennedy's, eh? I'll admit, I haven't really much music from them... teh shame! But yeah, I guess I got to check out that song then.
Also, about Submission Complete... don't expect it to be a big drum solo or anything, meaning don't get your hopes up. I'm not saying the drumming is easy (which it's most definitely not), but I guess I appreciate it more, because it caught me off guard when I first heard it. Anyways, it's just three and a half minutes of great, solid drumming.

Yeah, some Bad Religion, Sex Pistols, Dead Kennedys and maybe Iggy & the Stooges wouldn't hurt imo.

I would love to see the Kennedy's in RB but as far as listening to them on my own they just get too political. I do like some of there stuff though.

Another Agent Orange fan! That's nice to see, they're a cool band. I've posted about punk before, and a few bands that I would like to see(but won't) would have to be TSOL, Descendents and Propagandhi.

Actually The Descendents were in talks to be in Guitar Hero 2, so maybe they'll make their way in here.
I hope for 'Myage'.

The punk is in the game, but it's cleverly hidden so you won't find it. You have to follow the clues.

Bad Religion and Black Flag are pretty good. Does Rise Against count as punk cause if so id say add them.

Nah, I wouldn't count them as punk. From my experiences with their music, I wouldn't call it punk. It's close, but it just doesn't seem like it.

Punk died in 1979.
Back then Punk was a vehicle for social change ("London Calling" anyone?). After 1979 it lost that aspect and degenerated into what it is today. (To clarify, Punk bands that began before 1979 but continued past kept a lot of that social awareness).
Good punk to include would be The Sex Pistols, The Clash (No-one mentioned The Clash? What's wrong with you people?), and The Ramones (They have a song already, thankfully). Let's stick with the trailblazers who made this music for a reason and steer clear of those who don't infuse their music with a deeper meaning.

Well, The Clash were more of a fusion of New Wave and Punk. Their songs less mediocre than some of the Pistols or Ramones songs. Especially in the 80's, with the release of Rock The Casbah. London Calling = their best song (atleast in my opinion.)
To me, and probably many others, Punk was born in the 70's. And it's roots trace back to 60's bands such as The Bobby Fuller Four and Iggy and The Stooges.
RB does need some punk. Rancid, Bad Brains, Operation Ivy, Reel Big Fish(ftw), Black Flag, maybe even Rollins Band. (probably not the last two bands, Henry's antagonistic when it comes to gaming most of the time)

Considering some of the best punk albums came out in the 80s, I'd be inclined to disagree.
And I wouldn't consider Sex Pistols as "good" punk.

The only problem I have with the list is Bad Religion. I like Bad Religion but I think everything after Generator is utter crap.
Also, The first three Clash records are brilliant (S/T, Give Em Enough Rope and London Calling). Later stuff might not be so great. But I certainly wouldn't refer to The Clash as new wave/punk fusion.

The only reason I didn't list The Clash, The Ramones, Sex Pistols, etc. is because I don't listen to any 70s punk, so I wouldn't know what I was talking about.

all punk drumers do is over use there snare drum then add in a couple extra note here and there so look just stop trying to argue that punk drumming is faster and better and more tech then metal druming because it definatly isnt plus thats not what this thread is about now is it?

You're right that's all they do. How was I so blind this whole time?
Anyways, back to my thread. So... I guess I should add that when people list some songs, they should post it in the same format as I did: Band - Song [Album]. I want to see some people post some stuff that everyone in the band (bass, drums, etc.) can enjoy.

A good drumming song would be
My Brothers Wife - The Butthole Surfers (ElectircLarryLand)
Other songs I'd like are...
The Conspiracy Song - Dead Milkmen (Soul Rotation)
I Love Livin In The City - Fear (The Record)
No News Is Good News - New Found Glory (Rock Against Bush Vol.2)
Blister in the Sun - Violent Femmes (Violent Femmes)
The Saints Are Coming - The Skids (Scared to Dance)
Zoo Music Girl - The Birthday Party (Prayers on Fire(I think))
Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables(Whole Album) - Dead Kennedys
Nazi Punks F*ck Off - Dead Kennedys (In God We Trust Inc)
Riot - Dead Kennedys (Plastic Surgery Disasters)
Soup Is Good Food - Dead Kennedys (Frankenchrist)
Too Drunk Too F*ck - Dead Kennedys (Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death)
City is Burning - Pennywise (Unknown Road)
Anarchy in the UK - Sex Pistols (Never Mind The Bollocks)
Haha, got one from nearly every DK album.
And though not specifically punk, but with the same energy, I'd love The Fight Song - Marilyn Manson (Holy Wood). Me and my friends screw around with that song, us just going mental, and it's so damn fun. We don't even bother learning. We all know the lyrics, and thats enough.
Oh, and I've heard Submission Complete. Amazing.

Ok so Here We Are Nowhere is porbably a bad choice. And I wasn't all that fond of the Now Then.. record. I would take anyting from Inflammable Material to Go for It. Nobody's Heros was without a doubt their best record top to bottom. Just my not so humble opinion.

Hey you know who's a great punk band with lots of energy? NOFX! "The Separation of Church and Skate" on their album War On Errorism is sick! The only problem with that song is that the lyrics could be iffy and its 3 minutes long but its great stuff! Check out some of their other songs im sure there's great ones for RB

08-05-2007, 05:25 PM
Rancid - Maxwell Murder
Bad Religion - American Jesus, Social Suicide, Along the Way
NOFX - Stickin' In My Eye, Seeing Double at the Triple Rock, The Idiots are Taking Over
Anti-Flag - The Press Corpse
The Casualties - Leaders of Today
Misfits - Dig Up Her Bones, Last Caress
Pennywise - Fight Till You Die
Reno Divorce - Let It Loose
Stiff Little Fingers - Suspect Device
The Clash - London Calling
Dropkick Murphys - I'm Shipping Up To Boston
Flogging Molly -Drunken Lullabies
The main problem is that most punk songs are short. There are punk songs that are difficult to play, but even if there weren't, the raw energy of punk music would make the song(s) fun to play anyway.
