I was reading a thread about early metal, and a guy asked, "How did metal go from Deep Purple to Disturbed in less then 30 years?"
First I thought it was a question that couldn't be answered, but then I gave it some more thought and here's what I came up with.

How did it go from Chuck Berry to Deep Purple?

I think I may have come up with a reasonable (and simple) answer.
It's kind of like the evolution of a species. It's like apes evolving into man, in 30 years.
Every rock band since the 50's has been trying to be bigger and louder than the ones before them. After rock couldn't get any louder, bands started looking for a unique sound, something to set them apart from the other bands and revolutionize the industry. Now obviusly iconic rock bands are going to influence other bands, but these other bands need a unique twist so they dont end up playing at bars as a crappy cover band.

So, as bands are still trying to be louder and louder and also trying to be unique, each band slightly tweaks its sound from their bands of influence, looking at a short period of time, most bands sound similar to each other (at least fitting into the same genre) But looking at a larger time frame you can see and hear the large differences between a metal band started in the 70's and a band started in the mid 80's. Just listening to a 70s metal band and an 80's hair metal band, the first thing you notice is the pitch is much higher. Also, most verses focus more on the lyrics and the guitar is usually a quieter, repetitive beat, but with a louder chorus and usually very high pitched solos.

Now, slowly but surely the pitch, lowered from a scream to a roar, and soon the quiet verse beat turned into loud, chunky riffs and lower pitched solos. Vocal pitch lowered considerably, mostly beacuse skin tight pants went out of style in the 80's.

Obviously there are other factors influencing the evolution of metal, like MTV, making more about appearance and various other factors.

Ok, never mind. I thought the answer was simple but it's a lot more complex than what i had originally thought.

So thats one possible theory of how metal went from Deep Purple to Disturbed but there are probably a few other answers out there but they're beyond me

If anyone else has any other theories, Im sure everyone would love to hear em.

EDIT: Yeah...I overthought that one, or at least over-elaborated

It's simple evolution, man. Do the guys in Anthrax sound like KISS? It's not like one sound will be the definitive sound of a genre, it needs to stretch it's arms out and sound different, or else the genre will get stale and old.

But aren't men better than apes?

Apes are stronger than men though... Hand to hand combat-wise that is.

Ha, that was me!
It's just a remark about the quality of '70s Metal and todays "mainstream" Metal.

You really overthought it, but in a very thorough way. Kudos.

Very good point, It's retro evolution...Men evolving into some kind of screaming howler monkey
