I was wondering what is everybody's favorite female singer?

Mine is Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs she smoking hot and can pretty much sing as good as anybody in rock music.

Dude they're sisters. They are a big hit in the lesbian community from what i'm told though but that has nothing to do with the music. I like it. Most people who know of them are either scenesters or lesbians, and i'm not generalizing, I know a lot of lesbians =P

Sleater-Kinney is amazing though and not very well known. Corins voice is helluva powerful though and its too bad they went on hiatus, The Woods was one of the best albums of 2005

Yes, and quite a set of lungs, as well. ;) In seriousness, while I like her voice and singing ability, I hate the bland, generic, cookie cutter pop music she wastes it on. Even her "Back to Basics" CD was Top 40 crap with a token nod to soul/R&B, as opposed to a true exploration of that genre.

I love "Judith Holofernes" (no idea what her real name is) from Wir Sind Helden as well, she doesn't seem to be the slightest bit pretentious, just enjoys what she does, and has a great, subtly sarcastic sense of humor that comes through in the lyrics to most of WSH's songs.

Though I saw Dex_Ler fixed the Danish/Dutch thing, I have to add because of OCD and WT-fan-ness...Sharon has said she hasn't really been trained, she just gets it all naturally.
Which makes her even more awesome.
Personally, I say Anette Olzon of Nightwish and Sharon den Adel of Within Temptation. For vocal ability, quality of tone, and range. Anette has an amazing chest voice range (listen to her on 'Ever Dream' or 'Dark Chest of Wonders'), and she has a very clear tone. Sharon also has a chest range, not quite up to Anette's range, but she DOES have one...but I prefer her head voice. She has a very clear, beautiful tone up high, and has a very big range up there too--she has a huge range in general, I might add.
As a vocalist, they're my top vocal idols. I'd add Tarja Turunen, but sadly she hasn't been showing off her voice lately, and has changed her singing style. :/

Cristina Scabbia (Lacuna Coil), Sharon Den Adel (Within Temptation) and Maria Brink (In This Moment).

Also, there have been two female singers for Nightwish. Their albums up until "Dark Passion Play" were sung by Tarja Turunen. Currently, the singer is Anette Olzon. Tarja has amazing operatic vocals, while Tarja is more "pop"ish sounding.

At the risk of derailing this "I <3 or </3 Hayley" thread, my two favorite female vocalists are Sharon Den Adel (see signature) and Sarah Brightman. I could listen to both of them all day, every day. Aretha Franklin is a close third, though!

She's the bassist and backing vocalist. I've seen her sing live with other groups and I've heard sing her sing isolated in the Silversun Pickups. I like her vocals enough to put her in my group it doesn't matter if she's a instrumentalist, she's still has some vocals roles in the band.
