PS3 May Get Another Price Cut
Posted by EMorton - Tuesday, January 22, 2008 9:33 AM
If SlickDeals is to be believed, you Playstation 3 holdouts may soon have a pretty compelling reason to pick up the SIXAXIS. According to the site, which accurately predicted price cuts for both the PS3 and Xbox 360 last year, the Playstation 3 is due for another price reduction on January 29th and will retail for the new price of $299.
Adding credibility to the rumor is Sony’s recent announcement that it managed to cut the production cost of the PS3 in half. Though none of this has been confirmed by Sony yet, we won’t have to wait long to find out if the rumors are true. Put on your snorkel, because the tide of the next-gen console war could turn as early as Monday.
Will you buy a Playstation 3 now??

Definitely more enticing but still much more than I can afford. Then again, when MGS4 comes out I might cave :)
Consoles are still pretty expensive and I think I can live on just a 360 for now. Last gen, I didn't get all the consoles until they were at the sub $100 level.

I do not see this happening.
Stand-alone blu ray players cost quite a lot more.

No, just, NO! lol Think about it.. Original porduction cost of PS3 was roughly $820 give or take. In half they are still losing money per sonsole, unless you get the $499 one. If they drop the 40 gb to $299 that is still a lose!
Sony is trying to make money, not lose it!! Would be a horrible business decision on their part.

PS3 was a bad decision on there part.....or atleast the way they executed the production and release of it. I think even a PS3 fanboy would agree with me there.

Actually, no, I don't agree.
Sony couldn't afford to sit back and let the 360 have a 2-year head start, plus lag a year behind the Wii. Whatever they lost in production and release was more than made up for by retaining credibility in the marketplace, if only by a thread.
Think about this, though: even with that "bad decision," worldwide, the PS3 has sold more units since its launch than the 360 did in the same period, and it did it with competition from two lower-priced consoles.
The rumor that started this thread has been cropping up a lot of different places. One related rumor that seems to support it is that Warner Brothers made the price cut part of the deal for going Blu-ray exclusive. The further rumors I've seen have the introduction of the white 40GB unit coming at the same time, along with a price of $349 on the 80GB unit. EDIT: whoop...spoke too soon on that $349...that was speculation on another board with even less support than the original rumor...and he meant to say $449, anyway.
The 80GB unit costs about $400 to produce now, and the 40GB is probably in the neighborhood of $325. If they could afford to lose $300/unit for most of the first year, they can certainly afford to lose about $25/unit on the 40GB model for a few months, until they get the costs even lower.
I'm guessing, though, if the cuts happens, the Spider-Man 3 and MotorStorm deals go away.

If there is indeed a price cut, it would certainly push me closer to a purchase, but there still are no games that I can't live without yet (not a MGS fan or a DMC fan). I figure by the time FFXIII (the only PS3 exclusive I really care about) is released in the US, the price will be decent, and the format war (BluRay vs. HD-DVD) should be all but decided. Then I may pick one up.

It's already decided believe it!! (Blu-Ray ftw!!) and that helps Sony to lower the PS3 price, if Blu-Ray becomes the only HD format it means more production and more sales which in return means lower material and manufacturing costs.
Then again I could care less, I already have a PS3 and I paid 600 bucks for mine, but it's great news for those who wanted a PS3 but couldn't afford one before.
Edit: So are you just into RPG games?
if they keep dropping it, i might consider actually buying one just for the blu-ray player.

But the average console buyer buys a load of games. That's where they make the money. MS does (did) the same thing with both Xboxen. Only Nintendo is making money on their console hardware sales.

So are you just into RPG games?
No, but that's the only PS3 exclusive that really interests me at this point. Not enough to justify a PS3 by itself, but that, plus the Blu-Ray player, plus other PS3 exclusives - Hot Shots Golf, Uncharted (although who's to say that won't get a port) - will ultimately sway me once the price drops enough.

One Best Buy Was Selling $299 PS3s kotaku.com
Most of us wouldn't expect to walk into our neighborhood Best Buy and snag a 40GB PS3 for $299 (or any PS3 for that matter), but a lucky few who visited the Sterling, VA location were able to do just that earlier this month. And not only did a lucky few score $299 PS3s, but they were also able to snag 5 free Blu-ray movies with the offer, too. But before you get your SCREAMING PRICE DROP VOICE all warmed up, know that a sign marked the offer as a manager's special for that location only. Also know that the Easter Bunny isn't real, and we're not so sure about Santa, either.

If you love the God of War games, then you should try Heavenly Sword (PS3), the gameplay is very similar, you know, hack and slash, some killer combos, time based button pressing. But what really makes HS shine is the story (you'll shed a tear in the end ;)) and the amazing graphics and detail, there are some backdrops and scenery in the game that just a beauty to look at.
Really you should give the game a try, if you ever decide to get a PS3. Cus God of War 3 is a long ways from now, unless you know something we don't.

I agree with his assessment of Heavenly Sword. I wasn't a big fan of the gameplay but the story is great, the graphics are amazing and the best part is that it has some of the best voice acting ever put into a video game. The main bad guy is superb.
It's definitely a rental as on normal you'll breeze through the game in 6 hours or so. It is worth a rental just for technical merits.
Last I read was God of War 3, earliest was Q4 2009.

For those of you who didn't know this, the voice of the main villian is Andy Serkis (Gollum from Lord of the Rings) he also directed all the other actors in the game and all the Mokap, if anybody knows about Mokap acting, is Andy Serkis.

Heavenly Sword never apealled to me. I'm NOT an MGS fan. I tried giving Snake Eater and part 2 a chance. I chucked it out the window. (I am, though, a Splinter Cell fan. I guess you like either or.) FPS don't work on PS3 (in my opinion). I'm compelled to get Killzone 2, but I'm afraid it's going to be much the same as the first one(It was good, just not great like it was hyped up to be.) I hate Final Fantasy. The idea of turn based fighting sucks. (Pokemon was the only game that made that work for me. And I was addicted to catching them all.) All in all, like I said, I'm waiting for God Of War 3. If I waited 6 years to get a ps2, I think I can do much the same with the PS3.

Fair enough! but I just don't get what you mean by FPS "not working" on the PS3  Resistence Fall of Man was an awsome game, Killzone 2 promises to deliver the goods (to be seen), Haze (also to be seen) and with Resistence 2 later this year, 60 player online battles!! how can you say no to that?? and those are just exclusives. CoD4 for example plays wonderfuly on the PS3 at least to my standars, you also got UT3 and Raibow Six Vegas 2 on the way (March I think).
But hey, I not trying to sell you anything, you just buy a PS3 in your own good time.:)

I guess I should've been more specific on FPS's working on the ps3, sorry for leaving the posibility for confusion. What I meant to say is playing a FPS on the ps3 puts a lot of strain on my hands. The sticks on the SIXAXIS are too close together, (I'm one of like 5 people that still play the legacy configuration.) my fingers constanty slip off. If I do buy a ps3 for Killzone, I'll have to buy them condoms for the sticks! hahaha. And I've yet to play a game where the sensitivity is spot on to where I want it. The control layout is just not meant for FPS. (I can't state enough that this is my opinion, cuz I know there's ps3 fanboys, {not you guys, you guys are cool and respect an opinion} and I might get flamed on.) Games do run somewhat well on the ps3(Most games are victims of crappy porting, and that really sucks.). FPS's work at it's best on computers, then the 360(Unless you're left handed, then you're going to end up cramped also.).

According to a post on PS3fanboy.com, the 80 gig PlayStation 3 is being discontinued
According to the blog, "an anonymous Best Buy employee has sent us a scan of an internal letter, which notifies employees that the 80GB system is being discontinued."
The letter reads:
"The 80GB version of the PS3 is going closeout and won't be replaced at this time...It will come off the planogram on Jan. 28. The 60GB version should already be gone from stores. Only the 40GB version of PS3 will be sold in Best Buy stores at this time."

That makes sense. That's how I was with the Game Cube controller. I thought that thing was the worst designed controller ever. It actually hurt my hands to use that stupid thing.
Consoles are not very good for FPS games unfortunately. Though, I must say the Wii is really nice if you've gotten a chance to try Metroid Prime: Corruption or Medal of Honor: Heroes 2. That's the closest I've ever seen a console coming to being as good (and in some ways better) then mouse+keyboard setup.
On the PS3 you can use a mouse+keyboard on UT3. Hopefully newer FPS games will provide that control scheme as well.
I do consider myself a fanboy ;), I think for what you pay to get a PS3 you're getting one heck of a deal. This does not mean that I should disrespect other people and their opinions just because they differ from my own though.

A friend of mine, who just recently bought Metroid: Prime, said of the game to be the most immersive game experience to date. (and this guy is a troll that doesn't leave his cave except for days where he has classes.) The Wii obviously has GREAT potential to be the system where the FPS thrives on, possibly taking over the throne from PC(god I'm really hot on that idea).
Man I've been on sites where people will die by their system on who's the better. I naturally stand by my 360, but it doesn't mean it's the best of the three. I've bagged on the three of them. (Such as the Wii doesn't have the horsepower to make awe inspiring games. I don't believe I should be forced to have a Blu-Ray player in a ps3. 1/3 360 have a chance on dying, I'm on my second one.) I'm just glad this thread isn't filled with a**holes. I would assume, TERize, that you have a hi-def player, then the ps3 would be a great deal.

If the price cut should happen then it's great for all that want one. My PS3 (got it on release day) has not been used since finishing Resistance, the only game that was played on the system. My Wii has not been used since beating Zelda and yes the only game played on it. The Xbox has been used a lot more, I'm a offline achievement junkie. I do have games that are new for both PS3 and theWii but won't play them until I beat the expert solo on RB drums, so addictive.

THis pretty much sums me up. Give me something I have to, and want to, buy a PS3 for. Nintendo 1st party games sold me on a Wii and the entirety of the XBL package sold me on a 360. Pretty much the only thing sold me on a PS3 was it played blu-ray.

Where is the question at all that he was responding to? He was responding to someone's opinion with his own. I'm of the opinion that the PS3 outside of the high price was actually executed fairly well. Were it not for the already installed user base of the 360 and the insane sales numbers of the Wii people would not be bashing the PS3 sales as much as they are.
Do a google search and you'll see quite a few links that say the PS3 sold as well as the 360 did in the first year. Taking into account the shock value of the price point makes it's quite impressive.

Pretty sure this is his opinion, of which I agree. I really enjoy the Wii and it has just as many games on it that I like as any other system; however, for $299 (should that come true) it becomes a better deal when you take into account everything you get when compared to the Wii.
I've been considering getting a PSP just for the remote play features and some of the cool things they are building in between the two systems. To me, it's what Nintendo had hinted at doing but never seemed to get around to.

You just mention one thing for each console, but yet it has a negative tone towards PS3. You talk about wanting one thing but then say the PS3 has blu-ray. That's something.
I'm sorry you don't see the good games for it (Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, Folklore, Motorstorm, Warkhawk, etc.) but your email come off to me as one that is putting down PS3 users for some reason. Sorry, I just can't be in the "cool" crowd of bashing the PS3 because for the price it's one of the best buys right now.
The 360 is great, I guess. I'm personally not impressed with it, just as I was disappointed in the XBox last generation. Still, it's selling well and has games people like (for the most part they are not my kind of games), that's great. Let's see what year two of PS3 brings cause it's looking to have quite a few great exclusives.
If I may ask, what is so great about XBL? I grew up on PC games (got tired of upgrading my PC) and switched to consoles. I don't understand why people pay for online capability when it's been free almost everywhere else.

Actually, LZ's math was a little wonky.
It's not $30M, it's $300M, which is close to 2% of their revenue. Anybody that thinks 2% of your revenue is chump change doesn't know much about the way publicly owned companies work...
And, yes, FallenAce, I have paid for an OS...we ALL do: every time anyone buys a commercial PC (like HP, Toshiba or Sony), a chunk of that price goes directly to MS, even if the end user intends to reformat the drive and make the machine a Linux box.
I was looking at purchasing a system the other day, and I did a build-your-own at a site. In order to put any flavor of Windows on it, I was going to have to pay anywhere from $89 for Vista Basic to $209 for Vista Ultimate.
terRize, the PSP/PS3 combo is an excellent thing. Think about taking your PSP to work, connecting to your PS3 over the Internet on Thursday afternoon, going to the PlayStation Store and telling it to download the new DLC. Then when you get home, it's all downloaded and ready to install. Woo.

It wouldn't be the first time Sony denied a price cut within days of it happening:
Sony denies PS3 price cut. (July 6th) (http://blog.wired.com/games/2007/07/sony-president-.html)
Sony cuts 60GB PS3 by $100. (July 9th) (http://www.reuters.com/article/businessNews/idUSN0726030420070709?pageNumber=1)
Think of it this way: if you're Sony and planning a price cut, do you really want to impact your sales by telling everyone, "hey, if you wait just two weeks, you'll save $100!"
