Is my microphone broken?

just recently, when i sing on the microphone, i can't hear anything on my speakers but the game is registering the high and low pitch.
i would have to pull out my the usb and plug it in to another slot to get it to work...

Has my microphone kick the bucket??

I plug in my microphone and controller and then go to multiplayer.
then all my friends are in and ready.
when i hit X on the controller it says no controller is registered.

PLEASE HELP :( i would appreaciate it SO MUCH and help with any of youre problems
