View Full Version : Baba O'Riley question!

Baba O'Riley is one of the great songs of the The Who album coming out for download, and I was just wondering how that song was going to be handled?
I mean, there are only about 100 guitar notes/chords in the entire song, and they begin minutes in to the song.
So the big question is: Are you going to map the crazy keyboard stuff to the guitar?
That would make it incredibly fun, hard, and challenging.
I know that it isn't a Keytar Hero, but if Guitar Hero 2 could have a guitarless freeze pop song, then Rock Band surely can have this!

I was actaully wondering this too, it's such a fun song, but I think the guitar will be really boring if it doesn't get to play through the majority of the song.
I'm not sure what they are going to do, I think it is possible that they could do what you say, but there is also a possibility that they want to keep everything as realistic and legetimate as possible, and the guitarist will only play guitar parts.

I hope you don't play the keyboard parts. I mean, there is guitar in this song. You should play the guitar when the guitar is playing. I just want it to be realistic.

Well, then you get to sit and wait till 1:48 until you can play anything. This could get boring if you play guitar single player.
Besides Guitar Hero was never realistic with the guitar playing. I mean, you could easily play acoustic, electric, and both lead, and rhythm guitar in the same song.

I don't think many people will be playing the DLC in single player, it's really intended for whole band play. It will be interesting to see how they would substitute the Baba O'Riley synth part to guitar.

For those that have played GH1, it's really not a stretch to have the keyboard parts mapped to the controller. Frankenstein, anyone? If done right, it actually feels pretty natural. Or even with GH80's and the harmonica solo in What I Like About You.
As much as I LOVE Baba O'Riley, it would be terribly boring if you only played the actual guitar parts. LOTS of empty time.

Well, Frankenstein's part was a regular keyboard part. Baba O'Riley is a patterned synth line. It wasn't really played note for note by somebody, it was layered and looped. It would be impossible enough to play with a keyboard, let alone on guitar.
I agree the guitar needs to be doing something, but I don't see how you could play that part, or even transcribe it.

Actually, I think it would be...

Maybe they could set it up so that it plays the synth intro during the Loading screen and have the song start a few seconds before the drums kick in?

i think it would be better, easier for harmonix, and more realistic if we picked a different Who song
perhaps a better one?

Well since, they already picked "We Won't Get Fooled Again" for the game Baba O'Riley is on the Album "Who's Next?" which is up for DLC so as has been stated all over this forum, If you don't like it don't download it.

Okay, sorry about the upcoming rant here, but you guys have pushed a button with me here. Before reading on please understand that I mean no offence, that The Who are my all time favorite band (my fandom borders on obsession), and I'm very particular about things.
It's not "Who's Next?" it's "Who's Next". I've been seeing people refer to it as "Who's Next?" on these boards for some time now and it has really bothered me. Please get it right next time you refer to the album.
Sorry, for the small rant.
I really hope that they don't try to transcribe the synth bits to the guitar. Yes, it'll be more exciting, but I'm looking for a little more accuracy in Rock Band. Besides, if you're bored while waiting to come in, do what Pete Townshend always did, dance around and put on a show while you wait.

Also, "Won't Get Fooled Again," not "We Won't Get Fooled Again."

You find me a guitar player that can play that synth bit on a guitar and I'll give you the moon.
It something that I believe would be physically impossible to do properly on a guitar.
A good Irish Jig is always a good way to kill time (those who have seen "The Kids Are Alright" know exactly what I mean)

Any real fan of the Who knows that the actual album title was "Who's Next!" It sickens me when posers refer to the title as "Who's Next". Of course, during post-production Pete Townshend suffered a nasty acid trip where the menacing, phallic exclamation point intimidated him, and he immediately demanded that the exclamation point be dropped from all commercial printings of the album.*
One of the E3 articles on Rock Band claimed that there is no gameplay during the synthesizer solo on Won't Get Fooled Again, and everybody just stands around for a minute. If this is correct, we may well see the same thing for Baba O'Riley (or, as real fans call it, "Baba O'Riley!").
*None of this is true.

HAHA, amazing post! :D
I have to agree, I believe Harmonix has stated before they are trying to stay true to the songs and the feeling of being in a Rock Band as much as possible, so like if you were really performing the song, you just stand around, or dance around, or sing back up or do whatever when you aren't playing.

Dude, there are people who want 'Stairway To Heaven' in this game. Despite the fact the bass player and drummer will be sitting around staring at a screen for a majority of the time.
Since this song is part of an album download, it doesn't matter as much.

It is confirmed in the IGN Interview:
Question: One thing we noticed was that some songs feature long keyboard solos where everyone in the band is just standing around. Will you offer truncated versions of songs a la Guitar Hero to avoid this?
LoPiccolo: Rock Band is really about the songs. We put a huge amount of work into securing licenses and original masters for our favorite songs of every genre and era. In general, we are very reluctant to butcher these classic songs, and would prefer to present them as they were originally written and performed. We have also discovered that the quiet, down parts make the up parts all the more intense.

Or even with GH80's and the harmonica solo in What I Like About You.
I would have loved to play the harmonica solo in WILAY, and in 80s you are still playing the guitar while the harmonica plays in the background. So I don't know what you're talking about. Nothing was mapped. The guitar part is still accurate during that section, even though it's being drowned out by the harmonica in the original version.

I know that the song is going to stay the same, what I am asking is that they do as they did in the freezepop song i GH2.
Which is to "turn the guitar in to a keytar", or let you play the keyboard synth bit as if it was coming from the guitar.

Read the quote again, it says in there. I believe it's last sentence.

In other words, nothing will be changed or altered, so no, they wont let you play any parts that aren't actually played by that instrument.
