I'm sure there's an obvious answer for this, but why do you have to use master copies of the song? Can't they just use high quality rips?

This is to isolate the bass, guitar, drums and vocals. Otherwise there is no way to cut out the guitars (for example) when they mess up or stop playing.

It's more to do with the recording process in that everything is recorded on to separate master tracks so drums is one one track Guitars on another etc and then it's mixed together at the end it makes it easier for the band / Producer to make changes without effecting everything else it's how most bands do it .. so with Harmonix getting masters they would have access to the separate tracks making it easier for them to hear and lay down the note patterns as they just hear drums, guitars etc without the other instruments and vocals getting in the way.. or i could be completely wrong. :)
