View Full Version : Have all the covers announced so far been due to technical restrictions?

I'm just wondering if the three covers so far are there because the masters don't exist the way they need to be or if Harmonix just wasn't allowed to use the masters. Does anyone here have any idea? And if you're allowed to say so, HMX, then can you tell us why the three announced covers had to be covers?
I'm just curious, really.

I'm personally not a fountain of knowlege or anything ( hermits like me typically aren't ), but I have some guesses and one of them is probobly the correct answer.
1. ) The master recording could not be found.
2. ) Harmonix WANTED to cover the song because it's one of their personal favorites.
3. ) The master recording has parts in it that would be difficult to transcribe into RB.
4. ) Much like your guess, there are legal issues that prevent the master recording from being used.
but I'd prefer that an HMX member come jump in and say that neither one of the 4 guesses I came up with are correct, because I'm sure it's much more complicated than that.

I remember reading that they couldn't get the master recording of Paranoid because no one had it or something. It's probably the same for Tom Sawyer and Mississippi Queen.

I believe that is exactly right. They have said that they have tried to get every master they could, but the only times they couldn't were basically when it was too old or couldn't be found.

This is most likely the case. I can see the masters for Paranoid and Mississippi Queen being to old to salvage.
If they make a decent cover, I won't mind.

Pretty much all but #2. There are loads of reasons why a master can't be used, from their not existing anymore, to being lost, to strange and archaic ownership. Some songs, too, also were never recorded with Harmonix's Rock Band in mind either, so the tracks aren't really separated out the way we need them to be to get a good sound in game.

Lol, I can just see Leo Fender:
"Hmmm, I could make an electric pickup for a guitar to amplify it's sound. Then, I can replace the frets with colored buttons..."

"What do you think jimmy... Immigrant Song is sounding intense, but we should throw in a couple impossible solos in the event that several gaming systems are invented and games involving the imitation of an actual band become popular."

I'm hoping everyone has seen this comic (http://xkcd.com/70/):

(And then do it again in a moment now that they're out of Star Power.)
