View Full Version : Dual Guitar Songs?

I'm wondering if there are going to be any songs that use two guitars instead of guitar and bass, or perhaps an option of using the rhythm/second guitar instead of bass. This would rock as there are lots of really bad ass guitar parts/songs that do this.
Anyone hear anything about this or have any ideas?
most of my friends, including me, dislike playing bass because most songs are boring, and there are sooo many times we hear some songs and are like 'now that would be sick to play in GH' in terms of both of us doing these crazy parts that mix perfectly (think Unearth).
so.. yeah.

well if they're gonna have iron maiden in this game it'd be folly to not have the bass and it'd be folly of them to not have dual guitars. its a really huge dilemma you pose here, didn't even think about it to tell you the truff

Hopefully, they give choices between rhythm and bass.
Although I LOVE the bass guitar, many people do find it boring.

in gh2 in songs other than john the fisherman and yyz the bass was completely and utterly boring even on expert. like i said two posts ago with iron maiden the bass should be at least bearable to play. the tr00 bass worthy songs though would be on something like primus's other songs or more rush, hell even radiohead has some catchy bass lines (while not exactly note productive)

I agree, there should be rhythm guitar for songs that don't have a very fun bass part.

yea i think both should be made playable
why not?
they got 3 months left and the game is finished i actually wouldnt be surprised to see both playable for each song

Remember, bass gets a 6x multiplier now. If they do have rhythm tracks, the rhythm guitar should go back to 4x multiplier. The point is to reward solid bass playing, as strong bass (in a real band, at least) is what links the drummer and guitars. Besides, a lot of the songs don't have a second guitar. And honestly, I'd rather play a simple bass part than a simple rhythm part (although I may be biased, since I play bass IRL).
And as far as looking for good bass parts, it looks like RB should have a fair amount. Has anyone else actually listened to the bass in Won't get Fooled Again? Probably more interesting than the guitar...

You forgot war pigs and the red hot chilli peppers song but yeah many of the bass lines were very repitative.

I'd say it's safe to assume that you can play rhythm if bass is not offered. But I doubt there will be a choice involved.
They want people to play the bass part, it just completes the band as a whole. They need to make real bassists happy since they skipped out on a Bass career mode :P
But if they do include rhythm to be playable, it will probably only be for just a couple songs. I think they're making sure the songs they pick have somewhat enjoyable bass riffs.

80's has some horrid basslines. Like... good god, did they just pick random people out of grade 10 band class to slap bass in the 80's? Some are killer, but... most of em... hahaha

I think there should be three options on every song (or at least the applicable ones) where you can play lead, rhythm, or bass. And if you could do that, why not be able to play using three guitars? As in, you and two friends, not all playing yourself, but if you can do that... you'd probably re-define "one-man band."

The interface, including also the characters on stage, is all set up for 4 band members.
There won't be a chance that you can have 3 guitarists on screen, nor 3 fret boards for lead, rhythm, and bass.
It will always have 4 members: A singer, drummer, lead guitarist, and bassist/rhythm guitarist.

What songs do people really want a 2nd guitar on? The only ones that had a worthwhile rhythm part in GH2 were Jessica and Crazy on You. I'd still rather have a bassist on most, though, and fortunately it seems HMX has done that for everything.

We already know that Mississippi Queen and Wanted Dead or Alive both offer rythm parts so I don't see what you guys have to worry about.

Was that in the recent video interview that I haven't had time to watch yet?

Both videos for those songs were from private parties of people playing. They never actually say that it's rhythm guitar, but judging by the notes you can tell it's guitar and not bass.
You can see a lot of chords and H/O's and P/O's. More than you would on a bass.

No but there are videos of those songs, and I guess they show that they are guitar parts and not bass, I noticed this for mississippi but not for Wanted Dead or Alive.

the leaked mississippi queen on Kotaku showed rhythm guitar part being played (which nakes sense based on the song). The gamespot video showed rhythm for wanted dead or alive (which also makes sense for the song). It showed the people picking rhythm guitar, not bass. It also makes sense since Mountain and Bon Jovi both utilize rhythm guitarists. Don't Fear the Reaper, maybe Enter Sandman and Rockaway Beach will probably use rhythm guitar instead of bass.

I'll need to hunt those videos down.

Did it look like there was an option for bass, or was rhythm guitar the only option? I hope they don't arbitrarily decide which second instrument each song gets without a user choice. A lot of these songs I actually find the bass part more interesting. I'll have to watch everything again.

I don't think you'll have a choice on the songs that do have rhythm. Though, I don't think there will be many, but if a song provides rhythm guitar, then that's what you'll play. No option.

:( I hope not, but I'll wait until there's an actual announcement before I get too upset...

Well, seeing as how there's not going to be any metal in the game, not having two guitars shouldn't be a problem.
(One song from the black album isn't doing a whole lot for me)

Not to resurrect this thread, but I just rewatched the GameSpot demo where the editors played Dead or Alive (same video you mentioned, right?), and it was bass, not rhythm guitar. If you look, the symbol for bass has 4 tuning pegs, where the guitar has 6, and the guy has 4 pegs. Also, he's playing (when he's playing at all) the bass part, since when he's not playing there is no bass coming through.
And the Kotaku leaked video has disappeared, so I can't vouch for that. It seems, though, that the rhythm guitar actually isn't in there. Unless somebody finds a video that has rhythm guitar or HMX announces rhythm guitar, I'm going with it's not in there.

I was going off the leaked videos as well. But I see what you're saying now.
I guess we can't really say for sure then.

Yea, but I think because they skipped out on the Bass career mode, it gives them more reason to make rhythm riff AND bass lines for each song. I said this in the other thread about features. What if the bass line is too boring? Rhythm guitar. What if the rhythm guitar is boring? Bass. The bass player should have the option, after all he's probably gonna be bored not playing career mode. It gives the bassist more to look forward to, if you ask me, and it might make up for the lack of career mode. By the way, what if the song has a really cool rhythm riff AND a really good bass line? I would rather have the option.

Unfortunately you're not factoring in marketing. It's annoying, it's silly, it's bad for consumers, but sometimes decisions are not based on what's more fun, but for what you're marketing. They're marketing this game as a rock band experience with guitar, bass, drums and mic. You may not agree with it, but they need no other reason or justification for making every single song have bass.
As for videos, they've all been Bass that I've ever seen. I've never seen Mississippi Queen on a video on Kotaku, and they don't have it there now, so unless someone has a link to a video that shows otherwise, there's absolutely zero reason to believe Rhythm guitar will be in Rock Band.

The Mississippi Queen video I don't believe was on Kotaku, I think it was leaked onto YouTube, but that was a while ago when there was less info known about the game. Therefore, I think it was taken down.
But I'm pretty sure a lot of people swore they saw Rhythm guitar and not bass in that song.

I agree that the decision was likely bass and bass only, but I disagree that this is bad. I think it's great, because it let them add the mechanic of a higher multiplier, adding to the value of having a good bassist.

The Kotaku video was a leak and pulled off of YouTube and Kotaku pretty quickly. And even though people "swore" they saw rhythm guitar, the same thing happened for the GameSpot vid, so I wouldn't trust them at all...

Anything's possible. I'm personally rooting for a keytar, myself. :D
I actually was disappointed when they first starting marketing this game and they pushed the Bass angle so hard, and I play the bass! But in GH2, some of my favorite songs are the Rhythm side. Maybe I'm wrong and Rhythm will be in RB, but I'd be shocked if it was.

I think the reason for your liking of the rhythm more is because that a rhythm rarely plays one note at a time (unlike the bass, which rarely plays two notes at a time). 90% of the time, the rhythm guitarist is playing a chord; therefore, making the rhythm riff a tad bit harder.

I guess this ruins my dream of BOSTON's "Peace of Mind" ever being in the game? I'm thinking the twin lead sections would be absolutely awesome to play when I have friends over and the "gig" is at my place.

I want 4 tracks. Lead, rhythm, drums, and bass. FOR RBII, though. It's not going to happen for RB, because its already finished and the marketing bs. I posted that Some Ideas... thread and it talks about 4 tracks and two singers and whatnot. Good RBII suggestions.
