View Full Version : Not to be egotistical but... (question about my videos)

So, as you all know I put out a ton of videos of me playing drums etc.

And while the scores in most of my videos rank pretty high, there are some songs where I have massive point gaps.

These same songs are the same ones that people are constantly asking me to do.

So, I ask you all this:

If I were to put up videos of me doing songs like WGFA, Tom Sawyer, Ever Fallen In Love, Siva, etc. and I was getting a pretty high score/close to a gold star, but wasn't gold-starring them, would you still actually even want to watch the video?

Like Tom Sawyer i've got a gold on, but i'm 25K+ below the top score, and WGFA I get like 340,000 on on average, which is 60K below the top, Ever Fallen In Love and Siva i've got 2nd place on but not a gold, etc...

That, and to be honest (and this goes out to someguy and gurnkiller), I feel sort of unfair sometimes where i'm putting up videos of scores that ARE high level, but they're not FC's like someguy and gurnkiller's, yet my videos get WAY more hits and attention, so I don't want to unfairly rob them of attention on their videos. :/

I'm also asking this because right now, while the pad I have isn't PERFECT, it's the best one i've got and may ever get, so I sorta wanna get while the getting's good, if you know what I mean.

And mods, if this topic is bad to put in misc. discussion, you can totally remove it, i've just been wondering this for a while and wondered what everyone else thought.

Honestly, even though there may be other players who get better SCORES, your VIDEOS are better. It is worth it just to see you actually play and not just the screen.

Please don't hold back putting videos up :(
I will continue to watch each and every video you post. Your production values are so much higher than EVERYONE else's, and they keep improving. Your current setup (main view is you and the tv, in-set the score in one corner, your foot in another, the note chart in another) is REALLY nice to watch, and gives me a good idea of what I need to work on, personally, to advance to being a solid Expert player.

QFT

You get more hits because your videos are better. If they want more hits, they can work on that. Fact is, people who want to find FCs videos will do so. If that's what I'm looking for, I adjust my search accordingly. People who want good videos edited to show footwork and misc extras will find yours. If the latter group is bigger, not anyone's problem. I say do it.

I fear for your ego with all these compliments, so I'm going to balance all your positive feedback with some negative: You're a terrible person, and you're probably an orphan. You're parents just never told you because they don't love you.

Now get cracking!

Yeah, I generally just don't want to dissapoint anyone viewing: i.e. I don't want to be cheap by putting up what most people would consider to be only an average run of a song, yet get a ton of hits because of the editing, which is why I want my videos to be both good in visuals and score.

So yeah, I might do WGFA or Tom Sawyer this week, dunno yet, but this topic and the one at scorehero have helped some :)

Sskitzzo you underestimate the whole "production value" thing. That's why your videos are so popular. Also, another reason I like them personally is because you are so calm when you play. Your style has taught me how to play a lot of songs where I would normally just see all these notes and start flailing around like a maniac.

I really like the way your videos look and I also like them because I can really "see" the pattern of your hands when you play. If you had a 95%, I don't care.

Please dude, keep em' coming. Score is completely irrelevant to me. As has been said, your playing, production, and layout are great. And that directly leads to why I enjoy watching them: they are an educational tool for me.

I'll often have whole sections of a song, or just fills, that I can't seem to 'click' into. But as soon as I watch someone play it, it makes sense. It may be some odd bass/snare syncopation, or fill phrasing that I can't quite latch onto, or just trying to find an optimal sticking for a tough part. If I can see it being done, I can set out playing/practicing what I am struggling with rather than struggling with what I should be playing/practicing.

There is a hell of a lot more value to your videos than score show-off-manship... no shortage of that elsewhere. You keep making them and I'll keep watching and learning from them, deal? :)

Seeing what someone is actually doing to produce the action is much, much more compelling, which is why we watch all of your videos :D. And while they may be slightly better than you on some of these songs, the gap isn't very much at all.

Seriously, go for it. The other videos are nice, but the production quality and just seeing everything you are doing to make it happen would be sorely missed.

Just my $0.02.

Well, you know that in some of these songs I won't be nailing all the fills: there are one or two parts in Tom Sawyer and large parts of WGFA that I almost never pull off, so yeah.

The educational value doesn't necessitate perfection. Not only that, but the production and popularity of your videos may very well lead to tips on parts you can't quite nail. The education train travels both directions. As easily as they demonstrate to me how to approach and properly play a certain part, they can show others what you have difficulty with and how you are currently trying to tackle it. You can't get that from a simple screen grab.

Hey man I go through the same thing as well. My pads have never been 100% and they are not now! I still put up videos because I enjoy doing it and I want people to see some different styles of play. If people are watching you and the game says you missed a note but people that are watching see you hit it, they know it is not you.

I have been a drummer for over 30 years and some of these songs are tough for me. Everyone has to keep in mind this is a game and you are following some one else's pattern and playing style while the game may not have it right.

So now the only delema on my vids I have is this, Do people want to continue to see my hands or me in the video, or just the screen. I ask this because I bought a game bridge so I did not have to worry about level and sound, but I want to give the people what they want. Keep putting them up and I will watch!!:) How do you do the split screen stuff?

i say post them. The reason I like your videos(and others who use similar techniques of filming) is because there have been many occasions when I learned a better way of sticking by watching the way you did it(not to say you're the best, but I have no drumming experience outside of rock band, and seeing the way someone who actually does play particular parts is a BIG help to me).

For example, when I first got to the point where I could play on expert drums, I was going through the solo tour and at this point I had unlocked all the way to the section with Maps. I tried playing it several times and did alright but then I watched a video you posted of you playing Maps and it occurred to me that it would be much easier to alternate hands during the three consecutive blues and greens. It may seem dumb and simple but I guess I hadn't thought to do that. At the time, I was just using my right hand and hitting them 3 fast times.

Another example would be on run to the hills. The part where there is a yellow+bass, a small break then, yellow, yellow, green + bass. I was really struggling trying to figure out how to play that part but then I saw how you were doing it by just going, R RLR. Again, it may seem simple and pretty self explanatory that thats how it should be played but until I actually SAW someone do it, I hadn't thought of it.

So please post away. If your getting scores in the top 100 on a song make a video of it.

*EDIT* I'd watch any of those top guys videos if they were posted in such a way as to allow me to be able to see HOW their sticking.

I've watched most of your videos, thanks for doing them. As most have said, it's the editing and the presentation not the scores that matter.

I honestly don't care about FC. I don't really care about someone else's proving their e-peen. The thing I really like about your videos is that they're actually learning tools. I watch your sticking patterns and rhythm and it's helped me a few times to get things down. (beginning of I fought the law comes to mind).

There's always going to be wankers who are going to find SOMETHING to rip on your about no matter what you do. You might as we just do what you do.

Siva is pretty crazy.

When Rock Band was first released, I showed your video of "And Justice for All", to my non-believing co-workers as a means to legitimize the game. It worked. I showed them your videos for their production value and your high skill level in general. Frankly, your scores were irrelevant. But damn are they high. Hahaha.

I like watching the vids to see the expert chart, so your vids are great!

Some songs, I can hit the notes but I feel unnatural doing it. I have to jerk really fast, or I can't consistently hit it in the right spot, or sometimes I just want to know if there is an area I should be using a two-handed roll in or if it's just a single.

Your videos have helped me figure quite a few of these issues out ;) As most have said, it's the quality of your videos that keep me watching.

Your videos have also helped me beat some of the songs that I was having a hard time beating... "Move Along" being one of them...

I'd say go for it, I'd watch them.

Hell, people like watching videos of me 4-starring songs on hard... I'm sure many more of them would like to watch you doing 4 stars or more on expert. As far as I'm concerned a 5-star expert performance on drums is impressive enough to warrant a video.

I like watching them because it gives me different ideas on how to play things, or helps me understand the rhythm better (I don't sight read very well)...

It doesn't matter if you have the top score or not; you've already proven your skill many times over. I watch your videos because I'm able to see how you perform the song, and try to pick up tips from that to improve my own drumming. Your videos have also convinced me to buy some DLC I might not have otherwise. ;)
