View Full Version : When does it lose its fun?

I was in the car today with two of my friends I play with and we were discussing random things about games. From MMO's to RB drama is everywhere and fun huh? However we were thinking about the competitive aspect of it. Be it points or fans, solo or band. Things like MLG or ranking tends to make things that are fun, into things that are more like jobs. Playing Halo and people just jump off or hide to win, or RB when 100% is the only thing that you settle for... I mean doesn't that take some joy out of it? I love messing around... jumping around, screaming, and doing weird things to activate overcharge in the game. Just looking at the challenge thread from ewc vs cd... people flamed on the guy who although a little braggy was good and boasted. He is good. He has that room. I guess.
Ok a little more then boasting, but point being when does something fun like RB turn into something serious where getting agitated at your drummer or vocalists for losing streaks or not using overcharge right kick in. Seriously being number 1 in any game.. worth it? I've put my time into games and did them such and I say no.

I enjoy being "number one" among my group of friends, but I have no problem taking the backseat when I'm having an off game. I sometimes get a little frustrated during these times, depending on the circumstances, but I keep playing knowing the next match will be better. Competetive play doesn't kill games, it is people who quit or use unfair exploits who ruin the fun.

The only thing you need to make this game fun is friends. The rest takes care of itself.

As long as DLC that I want keeps coming out, I won't ever be sick and tired of playing the same stuff all the time and as long as I have friends to play the game with I think I will enjoy it. Being able to play guitar or drums or sing also helps - it's a lot harder to get sick of three different things than of just one thing.

Well, I love playing it with friends and such. Even singing solo to kill time. I was pointing at the "e-peen" contest that happens in games or like pointed above, the haxors and exploiters, that ruin it for me. As long as new stuff comes out and theres things to do I love it. But even online quick play has its epeeners out there... seriously. Enjoy and have fun, thats my take.

He's not inquiring as to when Rock Band will loose its zest, PrimusD - he's asking where the line between "casual" and "competitive" is drawn.
I don't play a whole lot of games, but those that I do, I play with both motives in mind. Example; I quite thoroughly enjoy horsing around with friends [online or in person] in a BWT or Quickplay, respectively. If someone sucks, we laugh with them. There's no stress, no spotlight - it's just for kicks, win or lose. When everyone goes home and it's just me, I take to the Leaderboards. Playing songs dozens of times until I can perfect an Overdrive path and earn gold stars. I wouldn't call that "fun", but it definitely is rewarding, and thus why I do it. Fun and rewarding? - Who'da thunk it possible?
Halo's the same way. I play with friends, for rank, and take it pretty seriously. It's not as fun as it is challenging, intense, and strategic. After I've gotten my fair share of rank-whoring, I play social matches with anyone - often strangers - just for kicks, and/or customs just to unwind and enjoy the Halo company.
Guess what I'm trying to say is, I play games for both the experience of just having casual fun, and also the rewards for other tedious/difficult tasks. It's a healthy mix. I think Rock Band, personally, crosses from fun to competitive when you're trying to outdo folks on the leaderboards, or play ranked Tug-of-War/Score Duel.
That's just me, though.
online play needs more. We need Online BWT so i can jam with my buddies. If we dont get it soon im going completely back to GH3. its more fun and competitive online. Like i played TTFATF on Expert and beat my friend so badly his guitar broke. It feels nice to break others hardware. =D

This game is can be very fun, or very competative, depending how you want it. Though I would suggest just having fun with it. I usually don't see people getting mad online when streaks are missed, or a bounus isn't givin beacuse someone missed a note. Everyone knows nobody is perfect. (I hope). The only agravating thing is when people play when they have no notes in front of them, failing the band, or when they get full Overdrive, and never use it throughout the entire song.

You know, I get agrivated when I have friends over who can't seem to play easy, but that is just because I can easly play medium now... still struggle with hard... but, I shouldn't because I bought the game as a party game and that is why I enjoy it the most. Its just fun for me and I want friend over just to play. Plus, I never expect to be able to expert anything since I can't even hard all but the simplest songs...

I'm at the point where 100% is all I settle for on most of the songs, but that doesn't take the joy out of it for me. It makes me want to play even more, achieve even higher scores. I love this game with a fire that burns like a thousand suns. I don't think it'll ever get old for me. I'll be playing Rock Band 6 with my grandkids.
