xbox live issue - recovering profiles

i've been having an issue the past few wekends. I have a few friends over to play RB, and everyone wants to recover their profiles so they can get any achievements that we unlock, however we are always unsuccessful, with an error tha the xbox signup service is unavailable. Anybody else running into this? its been going on for weeks now.

The best way to do this is to keep your individual profile's on a memory card that way you dont have to keep recovering them!

My friend had this issue when he came over to my place. Not only could he not recover it at my place, but when he went home he could not get it back there either! Eventually it worked, but I know that he was not happy.
