Today they released a new dashboard update and look what it does.
http://www.majornelson.com/archive/2007/08/07/xbox-360-system-update-august-07.aspx#comments
"Moments ago, the team released a system update (aka Dash update) to Xbox Live. Over the next few hours, when you sign in to Xbox LIVE, you’ll receive a prompt to accept this mandatory update. What’s in this update? The only thing this minor release will do is prepare your Xbox 360 for the wireless guitars that are being released in a few months.
No new features beyond this wireless support are included in this update. As usual, we’ve got some new features planned for later this year as part of our biannual release cycle."
It says wireless guitars, not wireless guitar, meaning that there gotta be more than one. Well, being that there are only 2 guitar based music games, I take it that means, Rock band is gonna have a no-cords guitar.

Um. The words "wireless guitars" in the actual post were linked directly to an article from IGN talking exclusively about the new GH3 Les Paul controllers. I don't know how you can take this as referring to Rock Band. When they said "wireless guitars," they were referring to the four wireless guitars that are being released with GH3 for the different consoles.
"prepare your Xbox 360 for the wireless guitars" as in: of the wireless guitars for the PS2, PS3, 360, and Wii, specifically prepare your 360 for them.

awesome! Not that I had any doubt that we 360 owner would not be getting the wireless. Still nice to see this update anyway

Why the hell would they prepare the 360 for other consoles' guitars? It must mean that the 360 is getting more than one wireless guitar.

This doesn't exactly confirm it, but it certainly doesn't hurt the chances, and I think there is a really good chance Rock Band will be out with a wireless guitare.
I think this update was made for "guitars" not to say that there are multiple wireless guitars at the moment, but saying that this is preparing for all future guitars that are wireless whatever they may be. If anything this is an update for Guitar Hero III.

Their wording actually seems a little awkward, as if they're specifically avoiding mentioning any particular game. That suggests to me that either it applies to both GH3 and RockBand, or that one or the other or both haven't yet completed negotiations over licensing MS's wireless technology.

I know they want to, and I know everybody is hoping/assuming they will - however, I don't remember seeing any official confirmation, and I don't see any mention of wireless on the main area of this site, and I haven't seen a wireless guitar in any of their demonstrations yet.

IGN says Rock Band shall have wireless guitars for 360.That article is based on the same Major Nelson statement that started this thread, and that statement didn't actually mention Rock Band - so IGN are just making the same assumption as some of the posters here.

I'd wait for an official word from Harmonix before jumping to any conclusions. I think it's a poor decision on IGN's part posting that article without any other reference other than the MajorNelson post. I saw that this morning and got very excited until I realized that it seemed to only refer to the GH3 guitars.
Microsoft originally was not going to allow any third party wireless devices for the 360, but they finally made an exception for the GH3 guitar. I think the reason we haven't gotten a confirmation on the RB guitar is the fact that it was still having tweaks done to it. I think the post-E3 IGN RockBand interview mentioned that the guitars were finalized now (not sure), so it's probably being tested for MS approval now and we'll receive another update if/when it's approved. Then we'll finally have some confirmation.

Of course they've only used wired guitars in demos...Up until the update, no wireless guitars of any type could be used. ;)

You think they're using Xbox 360s to demonstrate these things? No, they're using development kits and hardware that will be transferred to Xbox 360 when the game is done.
On a different tune, why isn't this dashboard update provided on the disc itself? Shouldn't all Xbox 360 consoles, including the ones that have no online access, be able to play the guitar(s)? If a gamer is looking to play alone without that new-fangled interweb, how will that happen?

^ FTW!
which is probably why retailers listed the bundle as having only wired controllers for the 360, they knew this prior to the update.

The reason 360 owners are in a tizzy is because we only have 3 USB ports to play on...and if we want a 4 member band, we are screwed unless one of those instruments is wireless...so, hopefully maybe the Fender Strat, or if the GH3 Les Paul is wireless and will work for RB...
Im a 360 owner, I want a 4 member band, so im hoping we get a wireless guitar kicked our way...

Likewise, I'm hoping to see a proper 360 bundle (aka one with a wireless guitar) before I can put in a pre-order, though it is looking likely that such a bundle won't be the standard one. It would be something of a disappointment, but a minor one that is solely Microsoft's bungling in charging people who wish to bring them business for the right to do so..

3 USB ports is enough. The mic plugs into the xbox controller. The only problem is if you have a wired controller. Which apparently only 1 person registered on this forum has a wired controller lol Most don't have anything to worry about.

That works too. Because for those who have Wi-fi, that takes up the spot for the 3rd USB port in the back. Therefore, needing a hub is necessary.

You know what's cool about USB? You can connect a hub and get tada more USB ports. Ever have a USB keyboard with two extra ports on it? Same idea. Maybe the drums are even a USB hub, who knows!
All hail the inexorable forward march of technology!

Still the wireless guitar has to be considered; How am I supposed to do a backflip after the perfect Enter Sandman quitar solo; dam I'll have to have a backup 360 after I rip the original one out of the entertainment center.
Plus how is the lead guitarist supposed to slalom the other band members with a cord. I makes a guy want to buy the GHIII package instead of the standalone.

I did not know that A: you can use a USB hub with the 360 (cool) or B: that the mic will plug into a wireless controller, but it totally make sense. I wonder how long the mic cord will be, though I'm sure it'll be long enough. Thanks for the answers, folks, I knew I could count on you guys.

USB = Universal Serial Bus
Universal meaning a USB hub can be used on anything that provides USB ports :D

That flying cord could be a health hazard...You could knock your lead singer's eye out or something...

No ****. Harmonics do the right thing and show Red Octain up; If you fire up that wireless guitar you better try to incorporate that xbox camera so everyone can see my three naked lady band members(with lower back tattoos of course) as I circle them with my guitar!
Our Band name has evolved intos " The Inked, Branded, and Intoxicated Sister Sleepers. You guys and gals can see the Band Requirements in the Rock Band Wanted Category!

We know that there will, eventually, be wireless guitars for Rock Band. This doesn't mean that the update was specifically for RB, GH3 comes with a wireless guitar, no cords for them on any of the consoles, aside from PS2. We can't rule out that this isn't for RB, but I don't think it's specifically for just one or the other, but both.

No matter what, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Harmonix bundles the wireless guitar. I've decided to buy both RB and GHIII bundles no matter what.
