In my basement, at the foot of the stairs, there are three light switches of the typical variety. At the top of those stairs is a single light bulb, also of the typical variety. I know one (and only one) of the three switches will turn the light off and on, but I don't know which one.

While I'm flipping switches, I cannot see the light bulb or any light that might come from it; I have to go upstairs to see what effect my switch-flipping has had. But, I'm also lazy... I'll spend as much time as I think I need downstairs, but once I go upstairs to check the result, I'm done and off to play LotRO.

How should I spend my time flipping switches downstairs so that, when I come upstairs, I know which switch is connected to the light bulb?

Flip the first switch. Wait awhile. Flip the second switch, then head upstairs and check the bulb. If the light's on, the second switch operates it. If the light's off but warm to the touch, the first switch operates it. If off and cool, the third switch operates it.

Afterwards get an electrician to make your house have less horrible wiring.

them: YES! BUT THEN IT BLEW!!

If you are lazy, just turn on all three and turn all three off when you are done. As long as the light comes on who cares.

Maybe when the other 2 are on they slowly leak poisonous gas into the house. And not the good kinda that just makes you feel happy, the bad kinda that kills you slowly with no good effects at all!

If that's the case he'll just have to crack a window and get a fan.

Mattmoss should NEVER install air conditioners, chances are it will just end with even more toxic chemicals being pumped into the room.

I really hope people get that joke... lol

Yeah, I'm staying away from air conditioners for a while. My fan works just fine....

Okay, next riddle. Two men stand back to back. Each walks forward 60 feet, turns 90 degrees to the left, then walks 80 feet more. How far apart are the men?

(I guess that's more of a math problem... who remembers geometry?) :)

In the physical sense: 200 ft.
In the emotional sense: Depends on how close they really were to each other to start. Who knows. They might have had a fallen out and are now very distant which could not be measured. They might have come to terms with their distant relationship and are really closer than they were when they first started. I think therapy and booze could get this relationship back on it's feet again in no time.

Yep, Huskie got it. 80 and 60 are the best numbers to use in that kinda equation, you don't even need a calculator to work it out.

Here is a pretty easy but classic riddle.

What does man love more than life?
Fear More than Death or Mortal Strife?
What do the poor have,
The Rich Require,
and the contented desire?
What does the miser spend,
The Spendthrift save,
and what all men take to their graves?

That is the problem with a lot of the cooler older riddles, everyone has heard them.

I am thinking for this topic to just open up the last 3 chapters of the 3rd Dark Tower book and just start posting the riddles they use against Blaine.
