I have just bought Rock Band and I am not sure how to activate overdrive. I have the PS3 version, if that matters. I did a search with no luck on "How to activate overdrive on guitar, drums, and mic." Can someone help? Thanks!

Guitar - Tilt it up at any time.
Vocals - Speak when there's an orange looking square over where you usually sing.
Drums - Wait for the rainbow colored lanes, hit a bunch of notes, and make sure you hit the last green note to activate.
Pretty sure all of this is answered on the in game tutorials tho. <3

Guitar: Tilt or use the Select/Back button (just like in GH)
Drums: there will be short free-fill sections when you have enough to activate overdrive, play what you want just make sure you hit the crash (Green) at the end of the phrase
Vocals: See those orange patterned parts? Say something during those blocks to activate your overdrive.
If you still can't activte your overdrive on guitar via tilting, you may have a faulty guitar (this was a common problem with early guitars). You can RMA it the normal way (for free) or the express way (psudo-free). (More info on all that here: http://www.rockband.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22922)

Guitar: Tilt the guitar neck vertically, or use the back button.
Drums: At the end of a drum fill hit the green drum. (A drum fill is when the screen becomes multicolored and you can hit any drums you like.)
Vocal: Say something, anything, in the yellow sections of the vocals.

Raise the neck of the guitar in the air, verticaly. Drum during a drum fill and hit the green note at the end. Sing during the part that turns yellow.
Best bet is to watch the tutorials.

Damn, four replies at almost the same instant! ROFL
go to practice/training
1st you have to hit all the white notes as they scoll down.
This will fill up yellow overdrive bar
2nd When yellow is at leased 1/2 full:
On guitar tilt the neck of the guitar strait up and wamo you will see yellow overdrive screen
On drums bang the colored parts as much as you want at the end one note will appear, hit that note and your in over drive
On Mic - just scream or say something when you words have yellow overdrive background

Wow! Fast and plentyful answers! Thanks yall! Now on the guitar, when can you activate overdrive? Does the energy bar need to be at a certain point?

The energy bar needs to be flashing yellow, and about half full. That's when you can activate it :)

Yeah, the overdrive bar needs to be half way full and flashing yellow. It can be more full than half way as well, that just gives you more overdrive time. You can also get more overdrive while already in overdrive, unlike the guitar hero games, so you don't need to be as picky about timing.

Also, if you have trouble activating overdrive by tilting the guitar, you can always hit the "select" button just below your strumbar. I've found that sometimes tilting makes me miss a note but I can often pinky the Select button without breaking my streak.
My PS Strat isn't as responsive to tilting as my XBox Xplorer, sadly. :(

Here's another tip to help you on your way. When you see the overdrive phrases (glowing white) if you use your whammy bar on held notes or chords (mainly the last one of the phrase) you can boost the amount of overdrive you collect from the note/chord.
Also when playing as a band, if you all hit your overdrive phrases in unison you'll get enough overdrive to activate.

Did your game come with a manual...? You should crack that sucker open. Lots of good information in there!

You guys are all wrong.
Drums: Throw your sticks at the wall, and bounce it back to your hand.
Guitar: Turn your guitar upside down and smash it against the TV.
Vocals: Take the mic stand and throw it out the window.
Bass: Instead of up-strumming, down-strum.
All Instruments: Plug in a GH3 Controller if on PS3.

You have to dance around exactly how your character in the game is moving while you are playing. That will definitely activate overdrive.

You're forgetting that this depends on which "style" you've picked for your character. For example, if you're configured as "punk", the vocalist activates Overdrive by doing a stage dive.
