Let me start off by saying that I love Rock Band and the cooperative game play. That being said what do you think about this game (http://gizmodo.com/352800/guitar-rising-for-real-guitar-heroes).It seems like with all the time spent trying to master RB/GH style of guitar playing you could learn how to play a real guitar with this game. Do you think this type of game is something that will catch on or are people more likely to favor guitar simulations?

learning real guitar is a lot harder and takes much more time, though... I also wonder how it tells you what fret to play on, from the video I saw off digg (dunno if it's the same story), it didn't look very obvious what fret you needed (just what string). And if you have some BLAZING SOLO coming down at you, it might be hard to read/play it at the same time.

I do like the idea however, and might try it when it comes out (assuming it works with my iAxe USB guitar)

It's pretty easy to make a guitar that would work fine in a simulator. Saddles with piezoelectrics in them are common and easily acquired, you just need to output them to something, like a hexaphonic jack. (example: Ghost pickups, which I have on my PRS http://www.graphtech.bc.ca/ghost_info.php)

The thing is, how do you display to people what they're supposed to play? I mean, you could use a music score, but then you have to have people reading music. Tab might work, but if the song is in a weird tuning, do you have them retune the guitar? Or just have the game do a pitch shift on its own?

In either way, most of playing guitar isn't the aspect of learning the scales. It's the creative side of it, and that's something missing from these games (outside of drum fills). I'm not sure people even want to do that. If they did, they'd just buy a guitar (which I find easier to play than the guitar controllers)

Looks interesting.. I think it'll appeal to people that are going to take the time to learn the guitar anyway. For someone like me who just likes video games and music, but has no real desire to learn to play the guitar... don't think so.

Actually the Guitar from "I Can Play Guitar" is pretty good because it has individual strings and individual buttons for each string but the software for it stinks so bad that it just kills the whole thing hence it is not very popular.
I thought about it though, that if you had a Guitar like the one from "I Can Play Guitar" driven by software like "Rock Band", it would be awesome and truly something that could be used to teach Guitar and make it into a really fun game.

I think it's a great idea. I will buy it.

That looks soooo ******ed.

What are there, 128 buttons on that thing?

Hit teal. Ok now hit aqua-marine. And then hit seafoam.

Man, that fuscia to magenta part is hard...

Get a real guitar people!

Depending on the cost, I would get it. I have a Peavy Rapter that I got 7 years ago that just collects dust.

I'm not sure how that would work by the looks of the video there dosen't seem to be much of an indication as to which fret you have to hit.

Wow, this is awesome. Thanks for posting this. I'm going to GDC for work so I'll be sure to check it out.

I am a real guitarist but a beginner, so I'd love a game like this.

it tells you which fret to hit by putting a number on the note icon. it's kind of hard to see in the video. looks cool, I'd probably get it.

Ah ok. I was trying to figure that out. So it's basically scrolling tab. I still don't see how it's going to work without some discrete string detection. Either that or it's going to be MEAN prissy on tuning and voicing, like my old GI-10.

This type of game just wouldn't have mass appeal. I don't think the majority of GH/RB players are interested in learning real guitar. How many Madden players actually try out for a football team? How many DDR players take professional dance lessons? How many Call of Duty players join the military? These games are popular because they are simplified simulations, and most of all they are FUN. I don't think the average person would find the tedious steps in learning guitar to be fun.

I dont know if Im a fast learner or anything, but I think learning the guitar is quite easier than picking up GH or RB for the 1st time and trying Expert.
Heck... My dad been rocking out for like Decades now, and Ive been at it for like 5 years. I can play GH/RB on Expert now while he cant even get 5 stars on any difficulty.

It doesn't have to be a Rock Band and/or Guitar Hero fan that would want to buy this. I didn't get into guitar because of either series. I was interested in guitar way before that, I just now have the time and money that I can dedicate to learning an instrument. There's people who are interested in learning guitar all the time who have never touched a video game in their life. This will be for PC and Mac, which I think is fantastic. Most people have a computer in their house, so a potential guitarist will find this pretty accessible.

The TC asked if this will catch on or if people will still prefer simulations. That's what my post was responding to. I didn't say nobody would want this, just that it would never rise to the level of RB/GH.

Ah... well, I do agree with you there. But I don't think the game is meant to be. Educational games notoriously don't have a gigantic market. Unless they're Brain Age.

I would so play that o.O; But it seems unless you play expert, you aren't actually playing the song, just a watered down version of it. Wow... interesting =]

I haven't read any replies or anything, but i assume it's just like the program that i've used in the past called TabIt It side scrolls tabs with midi playback as a way of learning a song, i'm sure it's the same way, the reason i was so quick to pick up on guitar hero is because of using TabIt for so long, you can check it out at www.tabit.net

That's pretty cool. It looks like the software just says "play string 1" and then it remembers what pitch that note was. There's no need to be super-perfect in tune. Also the "scroll through the difficulty and watch the chart change real-time was pretty cool" :P I have a desire to play real guitar which is entirely separate from playing video games with my friends.
