View Full Version : Fast double bass (Ride the Lightning on expert drums)

Any tips on doing those insanely fast double bass notes? As an example, these are common through most of the guitar solo in Ride the Lightning. I can finish the song, but I basically ignore the double because it will hurt me more than help my survival bar.

Do people actually use heel-toe techniques, or does speed just come with time?

you are only playing half the the bass notes in that section.

it's not "that" fast, and if you practice, it's a pretty steady beat.

Speed and focus really. I've managed to a combo going a good while through the solo putting more focus than usual into nailing the pedal notes perfectly.

And if you use heal+toe without a reinforced pedal.. it's going to break quickly.

Something like what Chris Adler (Lamb of God) does, is not possible on the regular pedal :p

Yeah don't try any techniques here.. if your foot is getting tired try to use your leg. Just lift your whole leg up insstead of just doign it in the foot. But you'll need to do it quickly.

It's just like Green Grass on Expert (during the 2nd solo), only about 20% faster. Yes, it can be difficult. That part of the song is what's stopping me from getting 5-stars.

I personally use heel toe (as much as I can on this pedal without a beater, anyways). I wish I woulda had the foot-cam on the video I did of this, then you'd be able to see some examples, sorry :X

It helps if you don't release the pedal up fully. You don't need to bring the pedal up to the top to register. Stil, these notes are hard with the cheesy pedal they give us. I miss them often if i'm not ready for them.

I thought heel-toe meant you keep your heel down. Your video of Foreplay/Long Time shows you using the heel-up method, doesn't it?

I'm using a real pedal and I miss them even when I *am* ready. :p I guess skill still plays a part, huh? :o

Nope, that's not what heel-toe means at all.

Here, watch this, he explains it way better in this video than I could in text:

Wow, fascinating. I can't wait to go try it. Thanks! By the way, what's this guy's name, so I can look up his other YouTube videos?

His name is Derrick Pope. His video on Stick Tapping/Juggling is pretty damn entertaining.

take the foot pedal. pick it up. put your toes on the vertex of the pedal and your ankle in the air. If you have small enough feet, you can do two feet on the pedal.

I found myself a better seating position and it became much easier.
