View Full Version : Hoping for Instrumental DLC

Hello all,

This is my first new thread on the Rock Band forums. I've been playing the game since it came out and usually browse the forums for DLC notices.

I would like to see Harmonix release some Instrumental songs for DLC. They would likely have to create a new tier (instrumental vs. challenging) but I think it would be a lot of fun.

Some ideas for bands I would like to see this for:

Explosions in the Sky
Red Sparowes
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
65 Days of Static

Then of course there is the more mainstream stuff like Metallica's "Orion". I think this would be really neat and could open the door for a lot of new songs, maybe even 4 instruments (lead, rhythm, bass, drums).

Ideas, thoughts?

I'm sorry Dan,but it's Rock BAND. Guitar, bass, drums, VOCALS. That would destroy 1/4 of the game. If you want instrumentals, wait until they make Drum Hero or something or go buy Guitar Hero. I'm sorry that was rude, but... Come on.

Yea, that's silly. What will the vocalist do? Cowbell for the entire song?

That's just not fair. I like artists like Buckethead, believe me, but it'd totally suck if you have four people.

Hypocrite...

Instrumentals would be cool, but it would be intensely boring for whoever holds a mic. Sorry...

Hypocrite? I was saying that you shouldn't diss other people's music types. I love instrumental music, but it wouldn't work.

Instrumentals would be good for 3/4 of the players. I think Rush's "YYZ" would be fun to get to play on drums (it's some of Neil Peart's best), but what would the vocalist do? Take a break, free-form scat, make up lyrics? I would like to see instrumental songs on RockBand (especially if Harmonix ever develops Pink Floyd DLC), but it just isn't a realistic request. The game was made for 4.

Anyway, I did suggest putting lead, rhythm, bass and drums which no one commented on... I'm kind of bummed no one else really jumped on this, but I guess I'm in the minority on this one.

And yes, Daytman that was rude; mostly the acknowledgment that you knew it too. Honestly, I listen to a lot of BANDS that don't have singers. Or sometimes we just play the game with only 3 people too.

I don't see why they couldn't make some instrument specific songs, and vocal specific songs, and sell them a little cheaper than usual. I mean, if you could download Bohemian Rhapsody, knowing full well that you could only sing it (I know it has drum and guitar parts, but they are so short, just ignore them), could you resist buying it?

I must agree the consensus on this. What the F is the singer supposed to do. could you imagine being in the middle of a mystery set and coming up on a song where one person does nothing but sit there like a bump on a log.

There are already songs that, in the middle of a mystery set, one person does next to nothing (depending on the difficulty level). There are quite a few songs that, even on Expert, the bassist is almost nonexistent. There are quite a few songs with very minimal lyrics.

What would be the big deal if one member got a break every now and again? Imagine having one song in the midst of an Endless Set List where you get to take a breather... that might entice more people to actually try the Endless.

My vote for an instrumental song:

"Orion" by Metallica

Next to nothing is one thing but totally is another. Besides are there any songs where the guitarist and drummer get off.

Hmmm How long is "Green Grass And High Tides"?...How long is the vocal part?...
Some is better than nothing? Im sure theres alot of singers pissed about that statement...And if somes better than none, also stated earlier "Bohemian Rhapsody" has short guitar and drum parts. Whats fair for some, should be fair for the others. And asking how often does drum and guitar parts drop off?...so your saying they're the important parts? Seriously, are you ASKING to be BEATEN by all of the singers in this game. I can see that, and i rarely even sing, im 95% guitar. Choose your words.

I agree with this. I actually made a topic about. I think that Harmonix could make song packs that are heavier on one instrument than the whole band. And if you have four people playing with you at the moment and that song doesn't have a certain part, don't play it!

I think this could be cool for quick play, but it would definitely throw off Band World Tour mode. If an instrumental song came up in a mystery setlist, it would indeed suck for the vocalist.
This is why I wish there was an option to turn off some songs during Band World Tour mode. I downloaded the Metallica pack, and whenever it comes up in a mystery setlist I have to restart the freaking game. I can get through some songs on expert, but come on!

If you think an instrumental song is bad I'd kill for for some old Hella songs like Biblical Violence even though its a 2 piece Drum and Guitar band <.< it IS still a "rock band"

I'm with you buddy. I posted a topic about instrumentals some time ago and most of the response I got was the unconstructive "You're an idiot."

I would love to see Explosions in the Sky. I'm not sure how Godspeed! would work. Great band but the incorporate some many effects , noises. and voiceovers it may be odd.

Yes, the game is designed for 4 but some songs are boring on drums or guitar or bass especially. While vocals and are typically engaging on most songs. Let the other guys have some fun. Hell, in REAL concerts by REAL rock bands the singer will often take a break (to have a drink, smoke, do some smack, whatever) and the rest of the band plays and jams. We should be able to do that too - have times where the singer sits one out or the drummers and let one of or the rest of the guys shine.

Besides, have any of you naysyers ever heard Explosions In The Sky? Look them up on youtube. You can't tell me that wouldn't be awesome to play.

Maps added a crappy bass line. Just add tambourine and call it even. I'd want YYZ by Rush, though.

And you people want Dream Theater in RB which has quite a few instrumentals? Go figure on that one lol. Can't have your cake and eat it too:p

I've had this thought for a while. This game is supposed to kinda simulate a real rock band, so instrumentals and such should be included in the game, they would be fun to play, and many real rock bands have instrumentals. Like the Alan Parsons Project for instance. They used to put an instrumental track on every album, while ahve an array of talented vocalists in the band (i.e. Eric Wolfson).

Also, I vote for APP to be in RB, c'mon fairly well known songs and a lot would be fun. Games People Play, I Wouldn't Want To Be Like You, Breakdown, Eye In the Sky, Psychobabble, Mammagamma, Your're Gonna Get Your Fingers Burned, The Raven, and Pyramania would be good songs for RB.

I find it kind of weird that people suggest instrumentals quite a bit, but then when I suggest, say, "Don't Stop Me Now" by Queen, people always say "Where ma guitarz!?" It would only work if they were unbiased towards which instruments are excluded (not just bassless or vocalless.)

If anything, La Villa Strangiato would be way better than YYZ. Just cut out the long synth parts, and it would be perfect.
Besides the fact that it has no vocals.

how about making the instrumentals not availabe in band world tour?

I would LOVE a 3 pack of YYZ, La Villa Strangiato and Leave That Thing Alone. LTTA would be an absolute blast to play for bass

Also, what drummer wouldnt want a go on frankenstein?

How about Red by King Crimson? another one that would be awesome to play.

BIoodAndThunder

I don't see what the problem would be. All Harmonix would have to do is make the instrumentals not come up in band world tour and not be accessible by vocalists. I thought this was pretty obvious. It wouldn't be hard to do. If you want to meet it halfway, they could always put in The Main Monkey Business by Rush. Geddy Lee hums in it but it's technically an instrumental.

I love you.

No, seriously... was just coming in here to suggest some KC. I was thinking more along the lines of Larks' Tongues pts. 2 & 4, or Vrooom, but Red is definitely up there as well.

And frankly, that's part of the reason I haven't made a separate thread for Crim yet; most of their best songs are instrumentals, with multiple people playing interlocking guitars. If HMX could patch the game to allow singers to hotswap their mike for a second guitar... well, then. There'd be no excuse for their omission, amirite?

I would love to see instrumentals. Like people said, they can just not be available for BWT or something like that. (Although if I were vocalist for my band, I wouldn't mind sitting out for some awesome songs that could be available.) a21schizoidman, your list is great. I want to play Wipeout, Walk, Don't Run, so bad, along with The Shadows' - Apache and Booker T & the MGs - Green Onions.

As much as I love GYBE and Explosions, I don't know how much I want to play them in rock band...

Well I know I'll never get the request fulfilled but the one instrumental song, if any, I want Orion by Metallica. For those of you who do not know, it's off the Master of Puppets album. /prays for MOP Album DLC.

Anyway, yeah, I think it would be good.

I'm glad to see some people are getting on board. I know it's definitely possible to make it so the instrumental songs don't come up in BWT, ideally the option would be don't come up if you have a singer, but load otherwise.

As far as Godspeed or any other band that uses noises and things like that you treat it the same way that the Guitar Hero/Rock Band games always do, map it out if necessary. Look at some of the Freezepop songs, "Jordan" by Buckethead or even NIN having some piano parts mapped to guitar.

OR maybe no one likes to sing, OR you don't have a singer?? At my house it is like pulling teeth to get anyone to sing, but EVERYONE would like to PLAY at the same time.... Come on people, lightnen up!

I have found myself wanting to have A 3rd guitar as well, WHY NOT HAVE LEAD, RHYTHM AND BASS, and of course drums, who says that wouldn't be a blast?
