The standalone drums are available for purchase like... tomorrow. According to HMX any ol' USB mic will do for singing. No, you can't use the controller for anything but controlling the vocalist.
The idea of a standalone game is that you could buy the instruments separately. Manufacturing and distribution are as easy to redirect as a drunk buffalo so when the instruments were delayed, the standalone game came out anyway. The standalone game also has the benefit that you can split instruments with a friend who bought the bundle.

I don't understand why people would buy this game and not use the instruments. Why spend $60 on a game to play with a PS3 controller?
I thank Harmonix for not allowing standard controllers to be used in this game.
Another reason why they came out with the game separately is for people who owned Guitar Hero guitars and wanted to just jam on the guitar. At the time of release, I don't believe they knew that the PS3 Les Paul doesn't work with Rock Band.

A lot of people play guitar hero with the standard controllers instead of the guitars....it was announced before rockband release though that the ps3 version had no support for a controller that the guitar, drums or mic was needed.
I don't understand why they just didn't hold off releasing ps3 stand alone version until the periphials where ready to sell.

Ok first thank you for reply.
Why i bought this game without instruments?
I live in Turkey and there is no Rock Band game in Eurpe yet. I wanted to play this game asap. Coz i do have guitar hero 3 with the guitar and loved it also you can plşay guitar hero 3 without guitar with sixaxis.
I was thinkin this was going to be fun. I tried to get this game with bundle but shipping costs too much so i decided to order without instruments but if i knew that its not working with controller i wouldnt.

it was announced before rockband release though that the ps3 version had no support for a controller that the guitar, drums or mic was needed.
Actually, the announcement was that it would be compatible with the GH3 Les Paul (yes, even the PS3 version) and I, along with everyone who bought the PS3 version of RB on launch day, was disappointed to find out that all the web articles and magazines that had reported this were incorrect. Later that day or maybe as late as the next day, retractions started showing up saying that the PS3 Les Paul was, in fact, incompatible.

I did not think the US version of any game would play on the Euro console?
I thought they were different in some way?

This is your own damn fault. Pat yourself on the back (if you can find it).

I also found this out on the first day and after about 20 minutes of trying to figure out why it would not work I called up my friend (who works at Gamestop with me) and was telling him to warn people so they wouldn't come back with their Les Pauls and bash us in the heads with them.
