Now, there's only been four bands I've ever heard that sounded better live than a studio recording. They would be Rush, Kiss, Led Zeppelin, and Genesis. If any of those bands songs appear in Rock band or a sequel (besides Tom Sawyer), how would you feel if they used live recordings instead of a master or cover? If there was a large arena venue, I think a live recording of a concert would create a more realistic feel to playing the game.

I think that would be a cool idea, and I agree there are a bunch of bands that sound better live than in studio. I just wouldn't know how it would work. How would the game deal with the crowds noise from the recording? Would it be seperate from each sound of the instruments?

That sounds awesome. If they ever offer live recording songs for downloads on Xbox Live those're the first I'd go after.

3 of the best live bands ive heard are the darkness, wolfmother and the living end. Any of them would be awesome.

If the song sounded better, yes it would be cool. The problem is that the songs need to broken recorded as individual tracks for each instrument, so that if four people are playing and one misses a note, you don't hear it. Or if you adjust the volume of an instrument, mute the vocals, etc. The music for the rest of the band needs to keep going.
If you've ever messed withed or watched youtube vidoes of custom songs for GHII you can tell there's a huge difference in ones using a single, compiled track versus individual tracks. It just sounds like the whole song gets quieter when missing notes. It's probably why there's a few covers in the game - they don't have the tracks separated properly.

I really like this idea. There's a lot of issues like the master recordings of these live records may not be tracked and loud crowd noise in a smaller venue type might sound a little weird (but probably not even as awkward as the fade outs in GH80s) but still lots of potential. Especially if we ever start seeing greatest hit's albums as DLC, the option to buy live album's as well would be a nice option.

I wouldn't mind some Live Metallica it wouldn't be hard for Harmonix to get as they keep masters of their live gigs to use for downloads.. I always thought they sounded better live than the studio.

As long as the live recordings are good quality and have the tracks separated I dont see why they couldn't do it. There could be problems acquiring licenses to it if the band had been with several record labels and some songs weren't allow while others were.
Nine Inch Nails live recording of their Fragility 2.0 tour is on top of my list of albums I want for Rock Band, so I do hope that Harmonix are considering the idea of using live recordings.

Glad you guys like the idea!
For preference here's what Harmonix should've used instead of Wavegroup's crappy cover.
