View Full Version : This is not Guitar Hero!!!

Ok, it seems as if many of you don't realize what this game is... There is more to it than just playing the tracks, there is the whole part of the vocals... And obviously, you don't realize that metal and emo aren't particularly easy to sing along to, or match tones with for that matter. Learn a little about music, and what Rock Band really is, before spouting out a bunch of crap, that makes no sense. So listen up god dammit, there will be no EMO, a small amounts of METAL and it will be real ROCK music.

So, are you saying there shouldn't be any Metal or EMO because there's none that has decent vocals?
Now, I'm not about to stand around and defend EMO, and I'm not even that big of a metal fan, but don't tell people they should learn about music, if you don't realize that metal IS a part of rock and has been for 30 years or so. There's plenty of metal (Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Ozzy, Metallica) that have completely coherent and tonal vocals. And yes the game isn't Guitar Hero, there's also drums and bass. Some of the most challenging drum and bass parts are found in metal, along with lead guitar. And the game needs some challenging songs so people don't get bored.
Don't worry about it too much, anyway. There will be plenty of ALL genres of rock for everyone to enjoy when the final setlist comes out and hopefully lots of DL content in the future. I don't think any one genre should be outright ignored.

a (sort of long) quote from the greatness that is Tenacious D:
You can't kill the metal
The metal will live on
Punk-Rock tried to kill the metal
But they failed, as they were smite to the ground
New-wave tried to kill the metal
But they failed, as they were stricken down to the ground
Grunge tried to kill the metal Ha,hahahahaha
They failed, as they were thrown to the ground
Aargh! yeah!
No-one can destroy the metal
The metal will strike you down with a vicious blow
We are the vanquished foes of the metal
We tried to win for why we do not know
New-wave tried to destroy the metal, but the metal had its way
Grunge then tried to dethrone the metal, but metal was in the way
Punk-rock tried to destroy the metal, but metal was much too strong
Techno tried to defile the metal, but techno was proven wrong
Yea!
Metal!
It comes from hell!

I can understand why there won't be much (or any) death-metal and such, because of the vocals, but Heavy Metal and such, where they sing normally, would fit perfectly.

And emos dont sing harsh unintelligible vocals. They sing pretty clear. Its the lyrics that are laughable.

I don't think you understood where I was coming from. Just the fact that you can't expect tons of metal and emo music, if so...you're looking at an unbalanced rock game. To call it rock, you have to have all genres of rock. And from most of the set-lists people are putting together it's mostly metal. I do realize that certain people may want to set up an all metal list, for your metal band, which makes sense... But the ultimate set list for a game like this must consist of more. I have nothing against metal, and I have tons of things against emo... 'Cause when it comes down to it, emo is an emotion, not a genre. But I'm also not saying they shouldn't include songs from said genres. Just need some diversity. Not saying I have a perfect setlist either, but at least it's well rounded, and touches most bases...
So, if you think you have any else clever to say go ahead...
Also, what can you tell me that I don't know about metal? ... and what do you consider emo? I was thinking more along the lines of "screamo" and not indie-emo which is an entirely different siutation...

So what do you recomend they put in the game, if not Metal or Emo?
mightymax421
08-12-2007, 11:38 AM
I already set up a list, search for it if you care. It's very well rounded, although I could've had a couple harder songs on there. To sum my thread. :
The songs needs to have great composition all the way trough, not just a banging solo, like a majority of the songs that I've seen requested. I have nothing against metal, I don't think metal should be avoided... But it also shouldn't be the majority. Is should be evenly balanced in every aspect of the song. But you also have to take into consideration that there will be tons of DLC and customizable set lists... So if you want an all metal setlist, so be it.

Because when you say Metal, you are referring to gruff vocals, as if thats what Metal is!
screamo, emo....its all the same, they all suck. Emo, grindcore, metalcore...its all bull****, a waste of organic matter.
We all want what we like. I dont think anyone is saying "put all Metal". No, or position is that we want some real Metal, not that VH1 attitude that thinks Pantera was the biggest thing in existence, as if Metal somehow stopped and went away. People that actually believe metal died and then Nu Metal came. No, Metal has never gone away, its been growing and developing, and nu metal sucks. Thats all we are saying. If they are gonna put Metal in, at least do a good job about it, not just put in Priest and Maiden. If they want the game to be an encyclopedia of rock, when it comes to Metal, then they have a responsability to put in Helloween, and Hammerfall and all those guys.
And, to make this a rant instead of a discussion, seeing Metal and emo in the same sentence is just wrong. I gotta go punish myself cuz I just did it.

I think that what many people need to understand is that this game will most likely branch out to songs that many people wouldn't consider to be a "good" rock band song. I have been talking to my boyfriend, who is a HUGE GH fan, about what I think will become DLC in the game. I don't think that we will only see songs with Lead, Bass/Rhythm, drums, and vocals. But we will see songs like Less Talk, More Rokk and Yes We Can. Once people begin to see that you don't have to have those select few instruments the game will take on a whole new life.
But I agree that Emo and metal shouldn't be the ENTIRE game. Plus I have yet to see them announce a song with a female lead. You don't see me running around *****ing about that either being that I am a female and would rather sing female vocals.
I think many of you need to open your eyes and shut your mouths. (unless you are a vocalist)

The other thing to realize is that many of the posts here are for people's own, personal "ultimate setlist," not what their idea of a balanced list for the whole game would be. So of course matal fans will post mostly/all metal songs. The same goes for emo, classic rock and others. If you like a wide range of genres, that's cool, but these lists are pretty much pure fantasy.

For starters, don't think I was comparing metal and emo in any sense. =P That would be blasphemy. Just in the sense, that the vocals tend to be harder to follow in those genres. Not saying all metal has rough vocals, or that all emo is screamo either. Just a slight generalization. And yes, that quote is entirely legit, which is why I didn't say that they shouldn't include those particular sub-genres, just that there is much care and precision used in choosing them.

Metal only fits that description in some forms.
Screaming metal does not always incorporate PROMINENT VOCAL MELODY. Guttural screams are just that... guttural screams. Prominent Vocal Melody in metal would have to be something like metallica or megadeth.. Anything where there is a melody that can be played out pretty much.
Example: Lamb of God's 'Laid to Rest' =/= prominent vocal melody. The music revolves a lot more around the instruments. That's a song that would not fit into Rock Band based on newways signature description of what Rock music is.

This isn't MY definition of Rock Music, it just happens to be Wikipedia's. Here is Meriam Webster's definition.
popular music usually played on electronically amplified instruments and characterized by a persistent heavily accented beat, repetition of simple phrases, and often country, folk, and blues elements

Exactly, that's my point. Just because you pull a definition of rock music out of one source doesn't mean it fully encompasses the idea of rock music to everyone. That's proven just by getting a 2nd definition. So saying 'Let's consider this song.. Well, it doesn't fit this one description I have so it ain't rock" doesn't work. So... why use the signature as a measuring device for whether or not a song should be in the game, if the definition isn't static?

I have a feeling that this game will get songs in DLC that would not be considered Rock by many definitions. Take songs like Less Talk, More Rokk and Yes, We Can for example. Those songs don't follow a traditional method, but still made it into the game.
I think that as the game grows, we will see DLC that doesn't feature Lead, Bass/Rhythm, Drums and Vocals. But we might see a Lead that plays a keyboard part or something like that. I just think that if we narrow the spectrum of this game, we are doing everyone a disservice.
I do agree that at launch there should be only or at least mostly songs that fit into the traditional definition, but DLC is the opportunity to broaden the horizon.

Rock music is a form of popular music with a prominent vocal melody accompanied by guitar, drums, and bass. Many styles of rock music also use keyboard instruments such as organ, piano, or synthesizers. Rock music usually has a strong back beat, and often revolves around guitar, either electric or acoustic.

There are many other higher quality subgenres to include than "Emo". There are so many genres not represented or under represented. If they get these, than fine, I'll accept "emo" and Nu Metal last, after everything else is there. And as DLC because these genres are easy to play, and hated.
You could tell me "Oh well that's just your opinion, your not the king of opinionsA!1111". Ok fine. Imagine a band that consists of sounds of punching the walls. People really like this band, and it has a huge fanbase. It's obviously stupid, but it's popular. Would you like wall punching sounds to be played all over? No, you wouldn't.

Emo and metal are subgenres of rock.
Rock and metal are brothers.
Rock has punk rock (subgenres include emo, screamo, and stuff like that), Hard rock (southern rock, experimental rock, psychobilly, rockabilly, psychodellic rock, several more I can't list), and soft rock (no subgenres).
Metal has:
power metal
heavy metal
thrash metal
shock metal
doom metal
death metal
Black metal

Yeah, but none of those show the CURRENT face of metal.
You get three things from current rock music today. Teenagers with whiny voices complaining about their problems, 30 year olds that play face-meltingly fast with gruffy, unintelligable lyrics, or power metal.
