If they are indeed using vowel and consonant recognition.... how are they going to make it work with the myriad of different accents there are?
I pronounce cement like sah-ment... while others say it see-ment. Any word on how they will fix this problem?

What problem? In the game, you get to match the diction used in the original recording. We all speak with 'accents'.
Recents statements have indicated that phoneme matching will only be happening during spoken vocal parts, not during the singing parts. And you have access to the recorded vocal track if there are any questions about pronunciation.
But I have no problems with bellowing out David Bowie's "Wham, bam, thank you ma'am!" using British vowels instead of my native Texan. In fact, I'm looking forward to it.

Yes but you see in KR and SS you don't even have to say words to get perfect scores... if they use actual vowel or consonant recognition... there is a standard for how you say the word.
If you actually have to sound like the singer... if only during actual spoken word sections.... it would be impossible to get a perfect score.
I'm wondering that if they are using consonant and vowel recognition how would they make the game recognize the many different ways people pronounce consonant and vowels.

Do you have a source for this? My understanding was that well-pronounced phrases were the equivalent of star power for singers, meaning they'd need phoneme detection on all the time (or at least frequently on phrases).

It was one of the interviews that got posted in the last week, but I can't remember which one. Can someone else help me out here?

.... I keep thinking of those scenes in Rush Hour where Jackie Chan kills War and in the second, that guy singing in the beginning.

I was under the impression that the phoneme detection was just going to about knowing when and where you're saying vowels and constants, not so much what letters your pronouncing. I hope it isn't going to try and do this as a "talk-to text" voice recognition thing since most of the time those programs don't work. As problematic as the game being unable to recognizing certain accents in the North American market, imagine what would happen internationally.
Plus I don't want to be punished for saying the original lyrics if they end up censoring them, but that's a whole other issue.

I can't remember where it was either, it was an interview though, I'll try and find it, but I know what you say was right.

" How will the accuracy of the vocals be calculated, can we expect a SingStar style system that pays no real notice to the words you're singing as long as your timing and pitch is okay, or have you taken things on a level and included word recognition of some kind?
In Rock Band we adapt the vocal analysis to best suit each part of a song. If it's a sung part we use pitch and rhythm detection, if it's more of a spoken part we use phoneme detection."

ok ive just bolded two points in your quote. First one, yh we do, and i'm glad you brought it to the threadmakers attention to his pointless thread.
But two... "British vowels"... we don't all speak the same. In the same way I can't tell an eastern american accent from a western, you thickos can't tell the difference between a southern england accent from an australian. (AND DONT USE THAT GOD AWFUL YOUTUBE VIDEO OF A GUY TRYING TO DO BRITISH ACCENTS)
Bowies English btw. Theres a HUGE difference to an english, welsh, irish and scottish accent. American prat. No offence ;)

Most singers lose their accent while singing.. Look at Ozzy. You can't even understand him when he talks.. But when he is singing he sounds like everyone else. Only people who sing with accents are hillbilly country folk and I think half of them are putting it on. All this really means is that you will have to try harder.

Not all Texans speak the same, either, but I think I my point was clear.
