View Full Version : Will DLC or anything else online vary between consoles?

I'm just wondering if online experiences will be significantly different depending on which console you get the game. Will DLC content cost the same for each console version of the game? Will each version be getting the exact same DLC music or will we be seeing exclusive releases from time to time for 360 or PS3 only? I hope the versions will be practically identical when it comes to online experiences, but I'd like to know if any differences between the two versions are planned.
Also, please refrain from talking about wired/wireless peripherals and such since that's not what this topic is about. And no console wars are necessary. We all know the Super Nintendo is the best.

Well we can only hope that the competition will keep both Microsoft and Sony competitive. Microsoft had the freedom to do what they felt like in GHII due to no competition and while they may still have a captive audience I'm sure they will want to keep customer confidence by not charging over the odds compared to Sony...All speculation atm tho.

I pray they do not have console-specific DLC. Considering the investment involved in the peripherals, that would be very disappointing. Getting the game for one system should be enough to give you access to all the content.

Hopefully not.
I'm sure the 360's online stuff will work better and easier, but the two consoles SHOULD have the same DLC.

360's online is better.

I can not see them logically having different DLC between consoles, they would be just asking for disaster with that one.

I think they will have to have the exact same music, it would only be fair. The one thing I could see them doing, if they really wanted to switch it up (this would probably give them more work though) is to realease the same music but at different times, so maybe Xbox would get one song the first week of the month and PS3 wouldn't get that song until the 4th week, but they would get different songs the first week that 360 wouldn't get until later. I don't know why they would do this, It seems more logical to me for them to just release all the same music for both.

Why add more fuel to the fanboy fire? I hope they just release the content the same day for all consoles to avoid any of 'Why did PS3 get it this week and XBOX didn't' yadda yadda yadda

"Fair" is got nothing to do with it. The way things have been going on lately I wouldn't suprise me if we get to see different DLC for each console. I hate to refference this but its just to further my point, Microsoft has recently paid an obscene amount of money for the exclusive rigths to a DLC for a certain game which name is about a "felony involving automoviles":p . So are Microsoft or Sony ready to pull this kind of strategy again to draw people into buying their consoles? I should certainly think so. Remember Harmonix can't control was goes on the Xbox Live or playstation network market.
For me, I hope that the DLC is the same for all consoles, all music should be available to all people, it would be a shame otherwise.

I bet the 360 will get more music more often as it seems to be a hastle to put anything on the PSN.

Don't start a war
...and why would it be a hastle ?

Is there a precedent for a lot of third-party DLC being published through the PSN store? There was a large Oblivion exansion that was announced for the PS3, then delayed, then cancelled. StrikerD may be right.
I could see a situation where Sony Music releases some free promotional tracks for up-and-coming artists, and makes them available for PS3 only, but I expect major content to be available on both platforms.
The good news is that there is competition everywhere. Harmonix is competing with Activision, and Sony is competing with Microsoft, so there is pressure on all games and platforms to keep the prices reasonable.

well it really wouldnt make sense for the DLC to be different, as like others have mentioned, it will piss people off if they owned a ps3 and 360 and bought rockband for the "wrong" platform.
that said the 360 might have an edge in DLC since live has been running longer. i only have a ps3, but i can admit the PSN isnt really as good as it could be. it can be sluggish, and some content that is on both platforms (like ncaa 08) only made it to the 360. im not sure if there is a set day that the xbox content gets updated, but the PSN trend is thursdays. so if the xbox updates mondays, you would think they would get their DLC available users sooner. HOPEFULLY though sony will be smart about it and not let it happen. we'll see.

We don't really have to wait for Sony as Harmonix don't have to add the tracks to the PSN Store they could have their own server in which PS3 users connect and download from.. Sony make it very easy for Developers and publishers to add servers to the PSN hence why you can buy and download the Resistance fall of man map pack from Insomniac themselves when you log into the game or from the PSN store.. but with Microsoft they don't allow anyone to add to the Live network everything has to go through them so in theory PS3 users could get the tracks first as we would only have to wait for Harmonix to upload them to their own servers while 360 owners would have to wait for Harmonix to send them to Microsoft and then Microsoft to upload them to Live. but we wont know for sure until Harmonix announce more of how the DLC is going to work.

wow, thanks for pointing that out. never thought about it that way. i totally forgot the auto update feature on resistance. you're right. it probably would work that way where you could select DLC from within the game's menu. i guess xbox may not have the edge here afterall...

I think it's premature to speculate on any of this.
I will say that Red Octane's strategy of "10 exclusive songs here" and "an exclusive expansion there" burned a lot of bridges. Based on that bad example, you'd think Harmonix has watched that and learned from it.
Besides, it's generally bad business to put in an artificial barrier that keeps users from buying their content. Microsoft isn't going to drop $50 million on every game developer to make things exclusive.

Looking at it from an aritists perspective, would you rather see your music released on all platforms or just on one specific console? Obviously the more people that are exposed to your music the better. I'm sure stuff like that has been ironed out in the agreements between Harmonix and the record label people. For that reason alone it could be safe to not expect any console only exclusive downloadable tracks because the artists loose out on that as well.

Unfortunatelly the artists don't have the final say, it's the poeple who own their record contracts, the guy in the suit who has all the rigths to the songs. I would say that only a handfull of musicians have the actual rigths to their songs. The music industry is a dirty business, record labels don't give a rats behind about the artist, just as long they can make a buck of them.
But.....things don't have to look so grim, that's what negotiations are for, hopefully Harmonix, record labels and whoever else is involved will find some even ground where everybody can benefit, including poeple like you and me. :)
