Does it have to be on expert? I got 100% and it just gave me five stars...

Yes, i think it does have to be on expert because you have to hit a cirtain score in RB to get gold stars. You do not have to hit every note. But if you do hit more notes, you are more likely to get gold stars.

It's all based on points and it's another level above 5-stars, but only on expert. I read all this in one of my mags. You have to do so well at the song that you get the 5-stars, but then score a lot more points to get the gold rating. Personally I've only done it once with Guitar on Mississippi Queen. You can do it without getting 100% if you use your Overdrive properly, and you can supposedly 100% and not get the gold rating if you use your Overdrive poorly.

This is true... it happened to me on I think I'm Paranoid. 100% but I did not let some of the long notes play out and one section I completely wasted overdrive...
I've done it three times (easy songs...) and only got 100% once out of three. It's easier on songs that have the same pattern over and over, since it doesn't really matter when you use overdrive. But cautious use of overdrive is definitely the key. I've heard that the amount of points needed is 1.5x the amount of five stars. so good luck

First time I did In Bloom, I got 100% without gold stars
Last time I did Foreplay/Long Time- 91% and Gold stars
It's all about score. And has to be on expert.
here's a list of approx. gold star guitar cutoffs for those interested: http://rockband.scorehero.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2366

I've yet to 100% a guitar expert song, but I've gold starred about 8. I always miss one darn note.

Well I didn't realize it wasn't possible to Gold Star everything. You don't know how long I tried gold starring Rockaway Beach. I had good path, got 100%, and still didn't get it. Then I found out it wasn't possible......
I'm trying to get those last three on career mode right now, and I'm still pretty far away :( (15K away on Aerosmith and Run to the Hills, 50K+ on GGaHT) I got the other 42 no problem.

yes. you have to get 100% on expert to gold star a song.
You don't have to get 100% to get a gold star. Just hit the point requirement.
I've gotten gold stars with as low as 96%, just know when to use ur OD!

yes. you have to get 100% on expert to gold star a song.
This is wrong. It does have to be done on expert, but it's a score threshold, not 100% notes hit.
The 3rd post in this thread has links to the gold star requirements for each instrument:
