View Full Version : What We Know About Character Creation

I just went back and rewatched the gamespot video. For those of you that haven't seen it, its a really great 40 min video, it is basically the best Rock Band video out there as of now. This video can be found here:

http://www.gamespot.com/video/938870/6175122/rock-band-stage-demo
http://youtube.com/watch?v=LjrhM1Nh7PI

So I was thinking the character creation and a few other subtle things that were seen in this video were never talked about so I thought I would list the things I noticed, throw in my two cents about them, and then everyone else could also throw in how they felt, and maybe we could uncover some of the cool things we haven't even seen from Rock Band yet.

1. Upon completing a song it shows your overall percentage, as well as your note streak, and assigns you a cool title.

Examples of which include 98% for Bass is "The Shredder", and 98%(might be 90%) for vocals is "Perfect Pitch"

2. Character Creation is as follows: Name, Hometown, Attitude, Physique.

Name, you get to type in whatever you want, I'm not sure what the character limit is, it probably is fairly large, they chose the name "Andy".

Hometown, from the choices seen you can either have Boston, LA, or Chicago as your hometown, it is not clear if there are more hometowns, but I believe it has already been stated that there are only 3 starting venues to choose from (correct me if I'm wrong).

Attitude, not many attitudes were shown, the choices seen are, Rocker or Punkish. This will have to do with your characters stage presence, their animations in the game, how they will act, and what cool tricks they will do during "star power".

Physique is all about how your character looks (obviously), You can change your characters weight, height, face, skin, and hair.
Face goes more in depth by being able to choose different looks, the choices seen were, Rocker and Metal Head. Once the face is chosen you are then prompted to choose an eye color, and you can pick most colors imaginable.
There are different hairstyles to choose from as well, the ones shown were Short and Feathered, Long, Tailgated, and The Pompadour, and upon picking this you are then prompted to choose a hair color, which again has most normal hair colors.

3. This moves us on to the next step in character creation, The Rock Shop. This is the place you get to spend all your hard-earned cash.

The Rock Shop has four main categories, Clothing District, Ink and Scissors, Instruments, and Music.

The Clothing District is very cool, and adds a great element to character creation. There are four different places to shop in the district, Punk Peices, Metal Mufti (I think), Goth Garb, and Rock Rags.
The Clothing falls into four categories, Torso, Legs and Feet. There is a fourth there, it is something I cannot read. (if anyone can read it please say so)

In Rock Rags, under Torso there are a few choices revealed, those are:
Vintage Rock Tee (Already Purchased)
Perfectly broken-in, this vintage tee will show everyone what brilliant taste you have.

Zoom Stripey $39
Long sleeves and rugby stripes make this shirt the one to wear when you want to get out of the van and make some music!

Dance Fever $89
You've always dreamed of a place in the sun, wear this shirt and you'll definately get the chance to do your thing!

AF Shirt $109
You're armed with rock, a force to be reckoned with in this patched shirt.

Triple Fat Moose Vest $159
Cross-country skiing or cross the globe touring, this vest will keep you warm and hip.

Leather Jacket Weather $189
This hoodie and leather jacket combo will keep you warm and stylin'

Once you have chosen a peice of clothing, you are again prompted to choose detail color, and there is a good variety of colors to choose from.
Under legs one example is shown:

Dungarees and Dragons $249
You'll be casting lightning bolt spells at all your fans in these wizard-worthy pants

A few things I noticed here are, first all the prices seem to end in "9", which is kind of weird, but I guess a lot of prices in real life end in "9" as well. Also there is a closet option, which most likely holds all the previous clothing you have bought, and it is where you will probably go to to change and observe your chracters clothing.

The 2nd category is Ink and Scissors. This refers to Haircuts and Tattoos. It has been talked about a bit your character will get to have tattoos, it would be cool if you could create your own for your character, similar to how you create your band logo, but who knows, you might only get to pick from a bunch of set ones. Haircuts are probably an easy way to change your hairstyle, and hair color, I wouldn't be surprised if you could get some cool coloring done, and some cool hairstyles as your progress through the game.

There are two categories they don't go into at all, they are Intruments and Music. I think quite obviously instruments are all the different kinds of instruments you can buy, and get to pick for your rocker. Music is an odd one however, I'm not positive what it is, maybe it is some sort of favorite setlist or something? Or it could just be bonus songs...It is most likely where you buy bonus songs heh.

After all this, creation of the character is over, this brings up a character screen which involves, Play Gig, Rock Shop, My Profile, and Community. Play Gig probably has some form of quick play as well as single player career mode. I would say that My Profile has to do with online as well as Community. My Profile probably shows a bunch of stats, maybe top scores and such so that people can see your skills and perhaps invite you into their band.

Ok so thats about all I got from it. A lot of it is really cool. The character creation itself while it seems really simple, looks like it will actually be quite in depth. I have a feeling there will be a lot of clothing and instruments and music to unlock and buy.

All in all, I thought it was about time this was posted about, no one has done so, to me it almost got ignored. Character creation is a big part of the game, and from what I've seen it looks really cool. It has been a long while since E3, over a month, but I think it is well worth going back to it, there was so much information given to us those few days, it is hard to retain it all.

This post took me quite a lot of time, so I appreciate anyone that actually takes the time to read this all out! If anyone else has found anything cool in this video (or even another video) that probably went unseen or un-talked about, then please feel free to post and speculate.

Wow.
Darn good job getting this all summed up! I was also very excited by the character creation segment in that video. I'm actually hoping someone plays around with it a bit more at PAX and gets a video of some of the options.

I think your assumptions are pretty spot on, so I don't really have much to add.

I think the profile is particularly interesting. I wonder if it will be a quick snapshot or detailed. Would be kinda' neat to have stuff like what instrument you play the most often, what your high scores are, percentage of the game completed, etc.

Can't wait to play with this when the game comes out.

Great list, but I'm pretty sure "The Shredder" is for guitar. It'd make more sense to me, anyway.

I do think I remember in the middle of one of the songs seeing bass get promoted to something like "Bass Groover" or something like that. My mind might've been playing tricks on me, though. Still, I like the thought of title updates and such.

And as far as Attitude goes, I think it'd be cool if you could customize your Attitude as well. Y'know, mix and match different animations and such. Shame it's probably too late to work that in, though. Who knows, it may just be in there already.

..Probably not.

Dude, tons of nice info, I never noticed almost all of that info.

But I have a good idea what "Music" is.

Well, I have two ideas:

1. What you said, just bonus tracks and such

2. It's more genres for your characters. I.E. Punkish, Rocker. That category might be more choices, like Emo, Reggae, Metal, etc.

Not sure if anyone has told you, but I looked at the video on GameSpot's site and it looks like it reads "Accessories" to me. I'd imagine that to be hats, glasses, earings, maybe even tattoos? Then again, tattoos would probably be under Torso.

i believe the 4th category (torso, legs, etc.) is ACCESSORIES...thought i'd throw that out there...it'll probably be necklaces, earrings, noserings, bracelets, watches, wristbands, etc.

It all looks pretty cool, but I wish they would have a much more in-depth face editor. Adjusting eye size, location, angle.... shape of nose, width, height... etc, etc.

Oh it says accessories, nice thanks, I knew it was some word that ended in "ies" but could not figure it out for the life of me. Yea probably hats and other apparel that doesn't fit into the other three categories, piercings too probably. I think tattoos will be under Ink and Scissors.

Yea I noticed the "Bass Groove" too. It might have something to do with the basses version of "star power' or it might just be something that happens when you are doing well...I'm not quite sure what it did when it popped up, but I've actually seen it appear more than once.

Thanks for all the feedback guys, keep it coming. Maybe we'll be seeing/hearing more of the create-a-character stuff at PAX next week, I hope!

"Shredder" is for guitar.
Perfect Pitch was for the singer.

Yea more like a Saint's Row thing

If you've ever played that game. It's like GTA but with gangs.

Anyway, sounds good.

I might be going out on a limb of speculation here, but my guess, is that this has something to do with improvisation?

For example: A groove could mean a particular scale that, when paired with the guitarists matching groove, would create a nice harmony that you could "jam" together with!

Or possibly some type of improvised solo.

So, then it's exactly like GTA?

I know what you're talking about, though. The Sims had a face editor too. It would be cool, but if it existed I'd spend way too much time trying to make my drummer look like Admiral Akbar and not enough time rocking...

But seriously, this is a really thorough description of that video. I'm curous if anyone caught anyone using the guitar to navigate any menus. I saw them using a controller and the drums, but that was all.

Nice work Paska. \m/

2 things.
This game will probably have the largest selection of (fully customizable) mohawks ever.
And, If any game should allow you to pierce anything and I mean ANYTHING you want, It's this game.

...I can dream, can't I?

Well I mean, we dont know for sure how set in stone any of that is. I'm sure we can use that video for guidelines, but is it possible things like the face were just preset because the rest of the face builder wasnt finished yet? I'm kinda hoping so at least, I'm not particularly fond of the way the character they made looks. The whole bug eyed five year old look aint doin it for me.

Don't expect Tiger Woods-esque tools. Chances are we'll get, maybe around 5, preset face models.

Stab a dagger in my heart why dont you. I've spent at least 2 hours upon opening each year's Tiger Woods making my guy look like me and it has set a high standard, for me at least, when it comes to create - a - player. Oh well, I'll just do a white guy with a round face and a goatee and tah-dah.... you have me...

Edit: By the way, big thanks to Paska for the topic. Answered a lot of my questions without having to look at the vid...
