Alright I wont add a poll until we got a good list of songs going

personaly i think the most overated song is Stairway to heaven.

Others
Freebird
Through The Fires and Flames
YYZ

just my opinion
if you want reasons ill give them

Stairway to Heaven
I still see nothing special in the song. Arpegiated chords for the begining. Lyrics dont seem to have any meaning. the drums dont come in till 4 mins after it starts and are nothing really special. Whats so awsome about the solo? he improvised it yet its reveared as the greatest solo of all time. its not hard to recreate and its not hard to improvise something close wothout even hearing the song. BTW i listend to the song while writing this

The poll list so far waiting till more post to make a poll
Stairway to Heaven
Freebird
Through The Fires and Flames
Bohemian Rhapsody
American Pie
Smells like teen spirit
Walk This Way
Jump
Don't Stop Believin'
Number Of The Beast
Enter Sandman

We will rock you-Queen

It has way to much publicity for what the song is.That also goes for We are the Champions.

I agree with your judgement of Freebird and Through The Fires and Flames.

On YYZ though I disagree, as a song that is overrated by Rush just a bit is Tom Sawyer. Tom Sawyer is a good song but it get too much radio play for its own good.

Edit:Aw sorry, forgot to mention Stairway to Heaven. It's very overrated, Led Zeppelin has better songs out there for radio play.

Overrated as in skill or as actual personal preference? Personally Stairway and Freebird are both amazing and just seem to have their own sound to them.

Zidane
02-22-2008, 11:08 PM
You're definitely right. It seems like Led Zeppelin was walking down a street one day and saw a crazy guy shouting at people. "There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold and she's buying a stairway to heaven!!!!!! When she gets there she knows, if the stores are all closed with a word she can get what she came for!!!!!! AND SHE'S BUYING THE STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN!!!!!!" That's my interpretation, anyway.

I agree with both of you guys. We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions, while both "fun" songs, pale in comparison to pretty much everything else Queen had done, yet these two songs and Bohemian Rhapsody (a great song but also WAY overplayed) are the only songs by this band that seem to get any radio play at all.

I personally think the most overrated (or, more appropriately, most overplayed) song in the history of rock is "New Year's Day" by U2. U2 has so many better songs, but why oh why do all of the rock radio stations in the area have such a fixation on this one mediocre (by U2's standards) song?

Zidane
02-22-2008, 11:19 PM
We Will Rock You and We Are the Champions has definitely been overplayed. It seems like those are the only two songs classic rock stations have. And it's always being jammed down our throats at ANY sports game. I like the songs, but damn...

I always thought Stairway was about a woman who acquired alot of money...She thought she could do whatever she pleased because of her fortune...And her money alone was good enough to get her into heaven...Then she realizes shes on the wrong path, but she still has time to make things right...

Some of the lyrics I havnt pieced together, but thats what I get out of the song...I dont think its overrated at all...IMO the best song ever

I dont agree with Freebird or We Will Rock You being onm this either...

Just to keep this interesting I'm going to say 'Enter Sandman'...why this song is so much more popular than most of their other ones I'll never understand.

Didn't expect many people calling Stairway overrated... especially when people beg for Zeppelin DLC on a daily basis. I understand where your coming from though, there are plenty of Zep songs I like more.

Here's my list:

Lynyrd Skynyrd- Freebird- it gets boring very quickly
Aerosmith- Walk This Way- a bit annoying to be honest
Journey- Don't Stop Believin'- ok i guess, but too cheesy
Van Halen- Jump- VH has a lot better songs, but this still seems to get the most recognition/airplay
Nickelback- every hit they've ever had- I don't know what people see in this band

Styx - Mr Roboto - their worst song, but their best known song
Yes - Owner of a lonley heart - see above
Nirvana - Smells like teen spirit - even Cobain dislikd this song, they have better than this one
Radiohead - creep - see above cept switch Cobain with radiohead

"American Pie" - Don McLean

I second this. Yeah, it's very well-written, but why do people worship this single song so much? I bet half of them don't even know what it's about.

I don't know how to answer this question because I honestly don't know what rating we are referring to. Stairway is #31 on Rolling Stone's list of greatest songs. Offhand that sounds about right to me.

Another thing that makes it tough for me is how to rate songs:

Do you rate just the song or also the performance?
Do you take history into account? A song may have been completely amazing at the point in time it was released but not held up for one or another reason, usually because tastes change but more often that not because recording techniques change and the sound is just not as good as it was
Which brings me to another point -- do you take production into account? A Day in the Life is a pretty simple song until you consider what George Martin did with it.

Now if I had to pick a list of recordings that people seem to be really into that I think are all right but are not in heavy rotation for me, I'd echo a lot of what's been said. Stairway is cool, but I don't go putting it on all the time. Freebird people seem to like for the solos at the end which leave me totally cold (I'll take Hotel California both for song and solos).

Here's where I expect to get flamed: there are about 10 Queen songs I'll pick before Bohemian Rhapsody. The lyrics leave me completely cold. Pressure is by far my favorite Queen song, and one of my very favorite songs of all time.

As an example of a song that how I rate it depends on historical context, I'll cite Like a Rolling Stone. Not my favorite Dylan tune at all. But when it came out, it was a bombshell. So if I rate it in its historical context it's way up near the top, but if I rate it based on which Dylan tunes I'd put in rotation on my iPod right now, it's probably not in my top 10, maybe not my top 20.

Who rates "Pour Some Sugar On Me" highly?

Don't know 4, 10 or 12.

You agree with "Light My Fire" being overrated? The lyrics aren't that great, but the opening riff is as good as it get. Tricky chord progression, too -- Am to F#m. Great organ solo. Breakthrough song for instrumentation and overall sound at the time.

To me, it's Don't Stop Believin' by Journey. Post the first few lyrics on a message board, and you'll have the whole song ten minutes later. The lyrics are trite and overused, the song is bad corny (not good corny, as these people were being SERIOUS about it when they made it), and it's just boring as a ballad (I can listen to tons of slow classic rock songs, but this one's a chore). I get the appeal if you're drunk in a bar, and everyone's singing it to be funny, but I just don't understand the hype of it.

I'm not sure. I used to listen to a lot of classic rock radio (until I realized satellite radio is the only way to go), and might have heard "Like a Rolling Stone" about twice. The only Bob Dylan song they ever played semi-frequently was "Knockin' on Heaven's Door". It seems like it really depends on which particular area you live in, as while many classic rock stations have homogenous playlists (my biggest gripe about the whole "classic rock" format), there are a couple variations in place.

I'd also like to know if this thread is directed towards the commercially overrated, the critically overrated, or both?

Although I really like The Number of the Beast, i have to agree it's way overrated. It's far from their best song, it's not even top on its album. The only reason it got so much hype was that Maiden were accused of being devil worshippers when they released the album.
Voted Stairway though, it's not close to being the best Zeppelin song and definitely not the best rock song ever.

Any bands with "Dragon" in their name, albums or song titles should get their faces out of the cheap Tolkien rip-offs they're reading and go outside and experience some real life.

The same can be said for the endless metal variations on death, the afterlife, Satan, Vikings and Norse mythology.

I'm going Teen Spirit by Nirvana.

Only because I saw it win a VH1 top whatever list. I love Nirvana and I like the song. But it is way overrated. It shouldn't win a top whatever list by any standard. I think it was a top 100 rock songs or something...and I was just thinking...out of all the songs out there to pick from - they picked that one as the best.

So while there are some songs on the list I don't like...when you say overrated, I'm thinking media exposure/reverity for a song that doesn't deserve it. To me, that song fits the bill.

I don't get why people think Stairway is such a great song. If it comes on the radio for me, it's not even one that I'd sing along to. I'm probably about 50/50 on changing the station when it comes on, depending on the mood.

Now, if Won't Get Fooled Again, Who Are You, or Baba O'Riley come on, the radio is getting cranked up every time and I'm Roger Daltrey/Keith Moon for the next 5-9 minutes.

I just don't get the massive fanboyism for Stairway, or for that matter, Led Zeppelin as a whole. Whole Lotta Love is their best song IMO, and it still doesn't even begin to touch the awesomeness that is The Who.

SLTS was a close second. However, Stairway wins out because despite being slightly less in suckage, it is far greater in popularity. 2+2<1+50, for the sake of using an equation seemingly to justify my reasoning but in reality just so I can type an equation.

Exactly, requires less talent and attention. People have ADD and don't like to listen to solos longer than 10 seconds. They like poppy, simple, repetitive garbage for the most part which explains rap's popularity.

The most overrated song is that nirvana garbage, it's unoriginal and follows the riff note for note in the exact timing of Venom's Countess Bathory (Metallica's biggest influence).

The chorus of that unnamable garbage:

A mulatto
An albino
A mosquito
My libido
Hello
Hello
Hello (repeat 10 more times)

DUH. Morons everywhere.

You're an ignorant fool, you know that? For one thing, not every song in the world needs some brain-dead, knuckle-dragging Heavy Metal type wanking his 'axe' all over it. Solos are over-rated, so don't even try to pretend that they are needed to make a song. Also, you obviously missed the note that says not all rap is liek Soulja Boy, and there are some intelligent, progressive artists out there just waiting to be discovered by about three people per a hundred who are intelligent enough to see through the bull**** you just spouted.

As for the lyrics, just because you don't immediately understand them doesn't mean that they are rubbish. I mean, for one thing the 'hello' being repeated is clearly for phonetic deviation and the sound of it more than the direct meaning. Not every song needs lyrics about sexually abusing some woman to complement its solo.

The song is pretty bad, but urgh, your ignorance sparked me to defend it.

No, nirvana fans are stupid, there's a reason "nevermind" was originally going to be titled "sheep." kurt is a talentless, unoriginal thief, "come as you are," their 2nd most popular song, is also a ripoff, in that instance a direct, shameless ripoff of Killing Joke. And rappers have no musical talent either, they have the amazing skill of writing good lyrics, wow. Most overrated crap ever, you can't tell me they're musically talented when THEY DON'T EVEN KNOW HOW TO PLAY INSTRUMENTS, WHICH IS WHAT MUSIC IS ALL ABOUT. You really think just b/c you can write a genius verse, you're a good musician? You're an idiot. Solos are overrated? When done correctly they're the most beautiful part of a song, listen to good music why don't you? Damn, you're a clown, and to imply I'M stupid.

Paraphrase of what you said:

"I'm pissed off at your comments b/c I'm simple minded and like repetitive trash. How dare you criticize rap musically? Solos are just meaningless wankery that don't compare to what can be done by such maestros as Tupac and kurt cobain with their mouths."

I expect an angry reply when you get home from school, you dumb kid.

Lol.

You attempt at paraphrasis is completely inane and superfluous, beause you already showed your ignorance well enough with the rest of your post.

Solos can be good, obviously, but you present them as essential toa song, which is pointless. There is not a formula to make a song, hence, solos are not needed, and are mostly superfluous because they are put in due to tradition, not need.
Also, I'm not a Nirvana fan, as I previously stated, and do not even like the song particularly, but felt the need to defend it based on your false attack. I'll agree that Come As Your Are is a Killing Joke rip, but I doubt that constitutes Kurt being a total thief. I mean, it may just be a case of him thinking that he wrote the piece, a fair and fairly common occurance.

As for the rapper thing, you think that an instrument is all that makes a song? Do you not recognise the amount of vocal phrasing and manipulation that some rappers put into their music? Just because you do not play a guitar like every other 15 year old boy on this Earth doesn't mean you are not a musician.

I can't believe I didn't attack this first thing. Yeah, and maybe it's just a coincidence that Venom's Countess Bathory begins with the THE SAME EXACT RIFF as smells like teen spirit.

It's JUST A COINCIDENCE that the riff is repeated twice in both songs, while in the middle of the second repetition (at between 0:07 and 0:08), the band kicks in.

IT'S JUST A COINCIDENCE that after the riff is repeated 4 MORE TIMES that BOTH RIFFS STOP and the riff changes while the singer STARTS SINGING.

Yeah, sure. Their 2 most popular songs are terrible covers with different lyrics yet the originals are hundreds of times better with MUCH better lyrics and go unnoticed.

Listen to the first 30 seconds of this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbldM7JEIeE

Now listen to the first 30 seconds of this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPQR-OsH0RQ

Repeat 3 or 4 times and then tell me "kurt isn't a total thief."

The only difference is that Venom switches the riff up slightly, slowing it down, for the last 2 repetitions before the singer starts which nirvana didn't do, which makes it sound a hell of a lot better not to mention the tuning.

they both have four chords, and have similar rhythms, so does the main riff in Boston's "More Than a Feeling"

Kurt Cobain himself said it was a very cliched riff, comparing it both to More Than a Feeling and Louie Louie, and I still have no idea how you think they both sound exactly the same, to chord progression is completely different. SLTS is I-IV-III-VI, Countess Bathory seems be V-III-IV-II

The song is also similar in structure to Tame by The Pixies, something he openly admitted.

but you can't say the riff is exactly the same if the chord progression is different, what determines the dynamics of musical composition is the relation of notes in intervals and harmonies. SLTS has a specific spot of dissonance at the third chord, whereas the Countess Bathory riff doesn't become noticably dissonant until it hits the minor second, which almost seems chromatic at first. In short, it has a totally different feel. By your logic, anyone who's ever used a blues shuffle or any variant on a walking bass is a theif.

MronoC

No, they wouldn't play exactly like each other, and key has nothing to do with it, the SLTS riff starts at the root, goes up a perfect fourth, down a major second, and up a perfect fourth again. The Countess Bathory riff starts at the fifth of the scale, goes down a major third, up a major second, and down another major third. Going by half steps, slts goes up 5, down 2, up 5, cb goes down 4, up 2, down 4.
They are structurally similar, both move in the same interval for the second and fourth chords in the progression, and move a major second for the third chord, but each still has a feel and sound distinct from the other.

The Number of the beast is overated if you are discussing the Maiden catalogue...as is Run to the hills. People who think this is an accurate representation of what Maiden is about is sorely mistaken. However the number of the beast is NOT overated when compared to much of the other music by other bands.. that is out there

Great bands, but Led Zeppelin and Nirvana are the 2 most overrated bands in history. They are great, but not as great as people seem to think.

Throught The Fire and Flames is extremely overrated especially from a guitar players standpoint. Everybody thinks this song is so hard to play on guitar when it's really like playing Eruption 10x faster. It's not that hard playing at 200 bpm's. That's why dragonforce is extremely overrated in general

Nickelback- every hit they've ever had- I don't know what people see in this band

People like that, for the most part, they're "edgy", and if you dare compare them to Umphlag Sturn, the Scandinavian Black Metal band that formed yesterday, I may scream. The vocalist doesn't sound smooth and manufactured. The guitars hit hard and the drum intros have been known to be sick.

No, they aren't brutal death metal. Yes, they are American mainstream metal. No, the lyrics aren't overly creative or thought provoking. Yes, the lyrics are catchy.

Also, they have a radio friendly political song. Which makes them current and everyone loves it.

EDIT: To conclude, they have an edgy sound(at least from the albums I own) that is accessible to the average person. That's why Umphlag Sturn will never be well known or popular. Lack of accessibility.

musically I'd say Freebird, yeah it's a good song, but when you look at it, the famous solo is pretty basic, 75% (if not more) is simple stuff, slow guitar melody and then the same note progressions over and over.

I think Marshall Tucker's "Everyday (I have the blues) is more interesting, except for maybe 3 quick verses spread out over the course of the song the whole thing is instrumental. It's 11 minutes long, and it does it all speeds up,slows down, has simple riffs, and complex....all of it.

Now when we're talking about RB or GH I'd say TTFATF (or whatever the acronym is for it)

I am so sick of hearing about that song, you find something on every group, forum, etc related to GH/RB,about it.

to those people....FTLOG find a new song

Fine then;

Musical reasons: it's lumbering, slow, and the guitar part feels entirely self-indulgent, coupled with horrible production.

Personal reasons: it's over-played, my **** rooommate plays it on guitar to try and seduce girls, everyone sings along with it, and I don't like how so many people seem to think music stopped when boring blues-tinged rock went off the menu.

Compare Kroeger to... Katy Perry. Voice is considerably rougher than you obviously think.

Most of All The Right Reasons starts with a short drum intro, such as Side of a Bullet, and the guitar work is heavy.

They're more metal than Warrant or the other 80s glam metal bands.

If Everyone Cared is the song I mean. It's blatantly political and radio friendly. Politics always makes a band appear current, and current things are popular. Hell, the song was nominated for a Grammy. I'd say that backs up the idea of them being popular - which they are.

You seem really easily amused and confused. But I suppose someone with a Radiohead reference of a name and a self-proclaiming Beck nut can't be expected to know about the mainstream.

People hate stairway because it isnt fast or complicated enough. But the song builds, I personally think the lyrics are brilliant, and I just get chills when the solo kicks in..great song.
