View Full Version : A less-than-metal set list.

I am not metal's biggest fan, but I've been playing GH1 since it cameout - and I think I represent a large audience of this game. I was mostly dissapointed by GH2's over abundance of Metal.
And so here is a list of songs I think would work well in this (awesome) new game and why I think they should be included.
Modest Mouse - March Back To The Sea
I know Issac Brock probably wouldn't want it in the game, but if you have music from EMI's lot, I don't think he will have a choice. It's clearly the best song on the new album, and offers a unique sound that will challenge the vocalist while being about a medium difficulty for the guitarists and percussunist.
The New Pornographers - The Jessica Numbers
The time signature on this song is unlike any other song ever. Timing the instrumentalists to work together could make this an incredibly difficult, and enjoyable, song.
Elton John (The Who) - Pinball Wizard
I've always been mystified by the lack of this song previously in Guitar Hero, but I feel it would work the best in Rock Band anyway. The Who fit the perfect form for the song (guitar, bass, vocalist, and drums.). The song is a classic, and the Elton John version is one of the greatest rock songs of all time. If not this song, then Smash the Mirror.
Franz Ferdinand - The Fallen
Franz Ferdinand got the Guitar Hero treatment once before, but with a simple and overplayed song. The Fallen would be a challenge for each player in the "band", and is one of Franz's best songs, IMO.
David Bowie - Suffragette City
I really didn't like the added guitar solo in Ziggy, but Suffragette City doesn't need any embellishment, it's a fairly straight-forward rock song that would fit this game very well.
Cursive - Dorothy at 40
Cursive have written a jewel with this song, which would definetly be at the end of the spectrum of difficulty for all the players at different parts of the song. Consider the song as giving each player an ability to have a shining part of the song without having the other players wait during a solo. Excellent lyrics, and catchy as hell.
Death From Above 1979 - Pull Out
This song could appease the metal lovers as well as the fans of good dance rock. A challenge for the vocalist, and more importantly, the mostly neglected bassist.
The Kinks
I'm going to honest. I just want to play some Kinks outside of a Van Halen cover.
Interpol - Slow Hands
This will be a great song for one of the first few sets, as it is fairly simple but not without being a noteworthy great rock song.
Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
Honestly, why the hell would you consider making this game without this song?
The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army
Sadly, this is the only White Stripes song that could be played on this game, as it's the only one that has a guitarist AND bassist. It's an alright song, but The White Stripes have a fully stocked catalogue of better songs.
Kaiser Chiefs - Ruby
Catchy, fun, the only cavaet being that the song is synth driven. Perhaps you could include a synth in a sequel? Or have you considered adding new instruments later on? Both the 360 and the PS3 could download the notes for the new instruments and affix them to the songs when the new instruments are present. Just an idea.
The Velvet Underground - Heroin
A classic, probably the first post-rock song ever written. The timing would be great fun for the players.
Harvey Danger - Flagpole Sitta
The song is a blast just to listen to, who wouldn't want to play it?
The Beatles - Strawberry Fields Forever
I know the Beatles don;t license their tracks, but if you could get this song, it would be AMAZING.
The Cardigans - Overload
I don't think it would be very fair to have the game without a few female vocal tracks (and god forbid I have to listen to a Patti Smith song on a video game), and I think overload would provide a challenge to the vocalist without leaving the realm of what is possible for normal human beings. Also - a fairly decent pop /rock song.
Tom Tom Club - Wordy Rappinghood
I just want to see some vocalists trying to match that chorus. And I'll be honest, I want to do it too. :]
The Darkness - I Believe in a Thing Called Love
Haha, see above. Also, great song, etc.
The Dears - Who Are You, Defenders of the Universe?
A Morrissey-esque vocalist (can you guys get Morrissey?) tells the story of a rat amongst an underground group of vigilantes. A well formed rock song, and remarkebly terse for a Dears song. I can definetly see this as the most fun song on the game.
The Decemberists - July, July!
I'm not sure the Decemberists would be thrilled about donating the song, but they recently signed to Capital so it doesn't quite matter what they Meloy wants, does it? Picked because it's the only song remotely fitting the provided instruments, there are better choices if you want to have more instruments played by the computer. I'd suggest The Infanta, The Chimbley Sweep, and The Legionnaire's Lament.
Elefant - Black Magic Show
Another great song for earlier sets. Simple, fun, catchy.
Fallout Boy - This Ain't A Scene, It's an Arms Race , Dance Dance , Sugar, We're Going Down.
These songs are sure to sell the game to a huge demographic - middle class white kids who wouldn't otherwise play video games. I like FOB, but I could certainly see these songs as moving more units than any other song on the game, besides maybe Panci! at the Disco.
The Futureheads - First Day
The time signature would amp the difficulty here up a great deal, making the song from a simple early set song to a dastardly difficult song.
Halifax - Anthem For Tonight
A hard rock clone, catchy as sin, and challenging. A great choice for this game.
Johnny Cash - Fulsom Prison Blues
A classic, I think it would work great for Rock Band.
The Killers - This River Is Wild
A challenging americana song, I believe it would be a great choice.
Ladytron - Light & Magic
If you play on introducing pedals to the game, this song could showcase the versatility fantastically.
Mew - The Zookeeper's Boy
Another great track for a talented vocalist. Starts off as an intense rock song, and segues into a hypnotic prog-rock song. Perfect for the game.
Morrissey - First of the Gang To Die
Great lyrics, traditional rock band style, a perfect song for the game.
Panic! at the Disco - I Constantly Thank God For Esteban
A great song that wasn't destroyed by radio overplay, I think it would work great on the game's format.
Plain White T's - Hate (Really Really Really Don't Like You)
In the same vein as FOB and P!ATD, but with a stolen mexican folk riff. Super hook, would be great fun to play.
R.E.M. - It's The End of the World as We Know It.
A great rock song, would be a challenge for any vocalist.
The Raconteurs - Steady, As She Goes
Was played quite a bit, and features Jack White in a more useable form - as a band.
The Rolling Stones - Mother's Little Helper
A mostly looked over track, and one of my favorites.
The Specials - Little *****
All this time, and still no ska? Let's throw in a classic. [and a trumpet controller :P ]
The Strokes - Last Nite
A quick little number, a great rock song. right up there with Blur's #7 in simplicity and rock-ness.
Sum 41 - Hell Song
I'd be surprised if this song wasn't included.
Ted Leo & The Pharmacists
Another band without any special song I want to hear, but I feel should be included.
The Thermals - Pillar of Salt
Great power, fairly simple. A great choice for an early set.
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - Runnin' Down a Dream
This game is being made for songs like this.
Wolfmother - Joker and the Thief
A great rock song, it would fit perfectly on this game, seeing as Woman played a significant role on GH2.
The Zutons - Pressure Point
If only there were a saxophone peripheral.
That's what I'D like to here. It took me about an hour and a half to do, but it covers what I feel would be great. I suggested mostly things I don't think other people will suggest, and I certainly don't want to play slipknot covers, so I figured I'd chime in with my own preferences. Hopefully they won't be overlooked :]

Lots of good songs/bands in your list. I'd leave out the FOB and (especially!!) the Panic! At the Disco. Thermals, Modest Mouse, Strokes, Cursive, DFA1979, Interpol, etc would all be terrific though!

I want more Metal, or just anything that is technical and difficult.
I feel a represent a large fanbase who feel that they need a new challenge.
It does not have to be Metal, find some complicated Jazz music or something, I don't care. I just want a difficulty level that is like a good, hard, slap in the face.

They should definately include joker and the theif.

Yeah, more songs like Crossroads, less like Rhapsody. Imagine Weather Report in guitar Hero.

I think they should have anything from Alkaline Trio, Metallica, Where is my Mind by The Pixies, and maybe some New Found Glory.

abundance of metal? their wasnt nearly enough metal on either game! plus we need more kinds of metal other than traditional and a little bit of thrash they need to include more thrash metal, and some progressive and death metal also. and i also think they should put pink floyd on rock band and i would enjoy "2112" by rush on rock band but their's no chance in hell they'll put it on in its 20 minute entirety

Shout at the Devil" Mφtley Crόe (this is a stretch calling this metal)
"War Pigs" Black Sabbath
"Freya" The Sword
Madhouse" Anthrax
"Laid to Rest" Lamb of God
"Beast and the Harlot" Avenged Sevenfold
"Hangar 18" Megadeth
Xbox 360 only:
"The Trooper" Iron Maiden
Bonus Songs:
"Arterial Black" Drist
"Fall of Pangea" Valient Thorr
"The New Black" Every Time I Die (not really metal either)
"Push Push (Lady Lightning)" Bang Camaro (more hard rock than anything)
"Red Lottery" Megasus
"Six" All That Remains
"The Light That Blinds" Shadows Fall
"Thunderhorse" Dethklok
"Trogdor" Strong Bad
So you have seven songs in career mode, and nine that are bonus songs that you don't even have to play if you don't want to.
I'm having a hard time seeing how this is an over abundance of metal.
However you want to look at it, 7 out of 64, or 16 out of 64. That's not at all an over abundance.

Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
Honestly, why the hell would you consider making this game without this song?
BECAUSE THERE IS ONLY ONE MINUTE OF GUITAR IN A FIVE MINUTE SONG, WITH EVEN LESS BASS. Plus, it's Queen's most over-rated song. Go for I Want It All, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Seven Seas of Rhye, Keep Yourself Alive, etc.
The Beatles - Strawberry Fields Forever
I know the Beatles don;t license their tracks, but if you could get this song, it would be AMAZING.
So... I guess you like songs that don't have much guitar? Go for Revolution, Rain, Helter Skelter, or Taxman.
Yeah, middle class white kids almost never play video games. Are you ******ed, or just a cultural hermit? Or both?
The Rolling Stones - Mother's Little Helper
A mostly looked over track, and one of my favorites.
Good song; too repetitive. Go for It's Only Rock and Roll or Jumpin' Jack Flash.
Wolfmother - Joker and the Thief
A great rock song, it would fit perfectly on this game, seeing as Woman played a significant role on GH2.
Congratulations, you suggested one song that wouldn't suck in Rock Band! Still, Where Eagles Have Been, Colossal, Tales, or Pleased to Meet You would be better.

i really don't like metal either, but the metal songs in GH2 are some of the most fun songs to play imo. u're song list is pretty kick ass damefinecat minus fallout boy and a few others...why, why did u have to put fallout boy on there?

First Day by the Futureheads is an excellent choice imo, fun to play and listen to...
plus, so few people know about them and I'm sure quite a few people who did like them have basically forgotten about them

Ok, I was mistaken. It's a guitar down an octave. Sounds a lot like a bass, wonder why he wouldn't just use one. Guess that's why I don't like The White Stripes...

Your list is good apart from some of the lame bands eg fallout boy sum 41 etc.
but i would LOVE to see more Strokes, Interpol, Modest Mouse,The New Pornagraphers, Franz Ferdinand, Kaiser Chiefs, The Killers, The Thermals.
and yes i agree about there being a little bit too much metal (mind you some are fun to play), theres need to be good balance of different genres to keep everyone happy, considering they've already included Reptilia - The Strokes and Main Offender - The Hives, im pretty happy so far :)

YES!!! Thank Rob Halford I read this before mouthing off.
OP, if you think theres an over abundance of Metal in GH II, you have no idea what Metal is. Probably thats why you are missing out.
Trooper is in Guitar Hero for 360?!!! Man, I gotta get cracking on that Career Mode.

I read this list agreeing with pretty much everything until I saw Panic! at the Disco. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. And as far as metal goes, I pity the fool who can't appreciate some tasty shredding and heart-exploding double-bassing. My only request is that screaming is kept to a minimum.

haha, his music isnt hippie crap, interpol and the strokes etc. are far from hippie. If you actually listen too them they are really good. Anyway everyone has there own opinions on their favourite music, thats why they will balance they game out with a bit of everything (unlike GH2 which barely had any alternative).
