View Full Version : Rock Refrences You Want to See in Rock Band

GH (especially GHII) had alot of rock references and easter eggs. From Stairway to Heaven (Remember, NO STAIRWAY!!!) to multiple Rolling Stones easter eggs (check out practice mode). What references do want to see?
Mine?
*Paul is Dead
*More "No Stairway"
*Cowbell of any kind
*A Phil Collins reference
*More Homestar Runner (Kissyboots by Teen Girl Squad PLEASE!!!)
*If there's a bustle in your hedgerow
*Mettalica's greed
*The Judas Priest trial
*The meaning of Blue Oyster Cult (sick bastards)
Let me think

Which one was Pathway to Paradise? Some movie parodied Stairway with that.
I have Wayne's World and never watched it.

I think there's a good chance they're not going to do anything that could potentially upset Metallica.

*A Phil Collins reference
If it recognizes when you're playing 2 instruments, it should also reference Geddy Lee when you play bass and sing.

A Wayne's World reference would be funny. Like if Bohemian Rhapsody was somehow put into the game, when it got to the part where the line goes "Beelzebub, has the devil put aside for me, for me, for MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE" at the final drum beat, the whole crowd and the people who are playing the instruments should all headbang.
Observe:

And I'm defiantly feelin some H*R refrences. Maybe a Limozeen extra track or somethin else that's awesome...

I wanna see more Spinal Tap references, not exactly the "11 is higher than 10" which Peter Moore butchered a while ago. I would be extremely happy if they made a video of your created band getting lost backstage (OMFG that part was hilarious!!). Honestly, I don't see what everyone's so worked up about. Sure, probably not appropriate for the game, but he's fine, isn't he? He survived to grow goofy facial hair and sue people for downloading his music. Not something so unmentionable that we should be offended.

These haven't been thought through, just food for thought:
* As in Muse's Hullabaloo tour, have a bunch of balloon/ large inflated balls get dropped down and have the opportunity to whack them into the crowd with your guitar (maybe by tilting it).
* After a particularly tough solo one of the strings snaps, so you have a quick change by chucking guitars between roadie and band member (I've seen bands do the 'toss swap'). It probably has an 'official' name.
* Pete Townshend's windmilling must be in there...
* ...as should trashing all of the equipment.
* Using a violin bow on the guitar, as in This Is Spinal Tap.
* A free-form Jazz Odyssey?

The PMRC (Parents Music Resource Center) was an organisation formed in the mid-80s by 4 women connected to the US Government (Washington Wives) and claimed heavy metal caused bad behaviour in teens (suicide, pregnancy) and stuff, because of the lyrics.

And how do the gravestones connect?
The gravestones are, just that, gravestones with "PMRC" written on them. Obviously somebody at HMX wishes that the PMRC would just die away because of what they attempted to do to music.
The PMRC was widely hated during the 80's due to it's attempts to censor music and blacklist (mostly heavy metal) artists.
Of course, the gravestones are Harmonix's commentary on the PMRC and I got a good laugh out of the reference when I saw it (being a Heavy Metal fan and well-versed in the history behind the PMRC).
Just to note the PMRC began in the 1980's (it was founded by Tipper Gore, wife of Al Gore), was ultimately responsible for the modern day "explicit content" labels and is still going today (although in a greatly diminished form). The PMRC attempted to blacklist many bands including, but not limited to, Judas Priest (for their song "Eat Me Alive"), Twisted Sister (for "We're Not Gonna Take It") and Frank Zappa (for too many songs to list here, although I'm sure the "Joe's Garage" album was high on their list). They held congressional meetings in the late 1980's at which Dee Snider (lead singer of Twisted Sister) and Frank Zappa gave very eloquent and well thought out testimony about their music.
The PMRC hearings are one of the reasons I really respect Dee Snider, as the man is obviously VERY intelligent and can conduct himself in a debate really well.
Consult wikipedia or another source for more info!

It was founded by the four "Washington Wives" who all had connections to senate officials (Hence, Frank Zappa's infamous comment "A Blowjob here, A Blowjob There and Bingo! Instant Senate Hearing!").
It is interesting to note that although he had not been the target of most of the PMRCs focus (although they did attempt to blacklist "Rocky Mountain High") John Denver came to the defence of music artists at the Senate hearings and offered up even more eloquent defences against musical censorship and for freedom of expression.
All three men (Dee Snider, Frank Zappa and John Denver) are very respected by me for coming to the defence of music and for showing that you don't have to be vacuous to be a rock star (a point that seems to be lost in modern music).

That's dope.
You sound really serious about it. I may check it out.
As anybody else on this forum can tell you, I'm firmly against any kind of censorship. I firmly believe in the power and potential of music (Lifehouse by The Who would have been the absolute pinnacle of spiritual music if Pete Townshend hadn't had the mental breakdown in the middle of it and would have changed the entire face of Spirituality and Music if it had been made, although for the best example of a completed song that can do something to you you'd have to go see The Who live and experience "Sparks". Everyone I've talked to who has been at a show where "Sparks" has been played has experienced some kind of spiritual experience).
Censorship puts limits on that potential and ruins music as a form of expression.
Music is a very personal thing and different people can draw different things out of it.
As Dee Snider said at the PMRC hearings about the Twisted Sister song "Under The Blade" "Ms. Gore can see Sadomasichism in "Under The Blade" if she wishes to. It was written about an upcoming surgery" (Not an exact quote, but the point is perfectly preserved). What may be an obvious interpretation to you may not be to me and why should that aspect of music be stifled? We are getting dangerously close to "Joe's Garage" territory (if you don't know what I'm talking about, find a copy of "Joe's Garage" by Frank Zappa and listen to it)
Rockerman
08-21-2007, 01:41 PM
Censorship sucks balls!I remember on the list they had Motley Crue,Madonna,N.W.A.,Beastie Boys,Public Enemy,I think Ozzy and so many good artists that without free speach, these artists wouldin't be anywhere.

whofan
08-21-2007, 11:05 PM
The "Parental Advisory - Explicit Content" notices on CDs are as a result of the PMRC. The PMRC started exerting pressure on the RIAA and they caved almost immediately, much to the surprise and anger of many of the artists.
Xzyliac
08-22-2007, 12:49 AM
Maybe because of my age but caving in would be of no shock to me. When the government *****es, and you don't do something everything goes to hell.
Am I mistaken or is it just a sticker? I still see Satanic rock, cursing, and blood in my record store. I may be wrong, and it may just be the annoyingness of *****ing mothers, but it is just a sticker right?
I mean even I, a open ESRB hater, came to forgive Lieberman. At the end of the day the content is still there but now parents have no excuse.
whofan
08-22-2007, 01:04 AM
Yes, it is true that it is only a sticker, however that wasn't the point at the time. It has since been proven that the RIAA won't go further than that (although who knows anymore), but at the time it was seen as a major step towards self-censoring by the Artists.
Besides, as Dee Snider said at the hearings "On average kids buy one album a week, is it too much to ask a parent to listen to one album a week?". (Remember, Dee Snider was a Rock Star AND a parent. If he (or his wife) could monitor his kids well enough, then there should be no excuse for most people (some may not have time because of working multiple jobs, etc))(As you can see I quote Dee Snider a lot). His point is a valid one, a parent should be the one determining what their kids are listening to (Video games are a different story because of the complexity and length of them) not some busybodies states (or even a whole Country!) away. I understand that things have changed a little bit because I'm sure that average of an album a week has jumped a bit, but the point is still valid.
Good parents should have no excuse and should not be outraged by their children listening to/playing these things as they should be taking a vested interest in what their children are listening to/playing. If you are aware of what is going on in your child's life, then you can intervene. Why should companies/artists have to pay the price for lazy parenting?
(That all being said, I do not mind the stickers that much (after all, it does not effect the content) and I do support the ESRB (because of the complexity of games it would difficult to completely monitor your children from start to finish), I just do not wish to see things progress further than they already have)
Okay, rant over, let's put this back on topic here....
Other references I'd love to see are more hillarious references to the defining moments in rock (much like the GH2 loading screens) like Rock Operas, Constant Replacing of Members, the 29 Club and cross-genre failures.

I may have remembered this wrong (I have done on earlier occasions in this thread :o ):
* Odd items, such as a fridge, being surfed across the crowd as in Wayne's World 2

I'm almost positive there in fact was a pair of panties in GH2. It was on the stage of one of the venues. I'll get a screen and post it when I find one.
EDIT: Yep, they're in there. Can't get a screen tho. The Vans Warped Tour Venue. Check the stage by your guy. There are several articles of clothing, like heart boxers, a bra, panties, and a yellowish tank top. Check it.

I swear I seen that once too but I blew it off thinking there was no way. Please find that screen.
