apparently some people on this forum believe bands like panic at the disco and fall out boy are indie. these people are incorrect those bands fall into the teenage girl genre, alright? indie music doesnt have a specific "sound" because all it really means is that the band is signed by a minor company. also, indie=/=emo, seriously. im sure many of you have played the songs reptilia by the strokes and electric version by the new pornographers (both considered indie bands) and grown to like them even if their charts are kinda ****ty. In addition not everyone who likes indie music is a stuck up piece of ****, although a fair amount are.

Indie has always seemed incredibly quirky to me.

Strokes are more pop punk I think...

A lot of the Juno soundtrack could be considered indie, and I really like it. But the Strokes, Panic, FOB, are definately not indie.

rule of thumb: If it sounds like the band can't play their instruments and is just making random sounds, or if the person singing isn't attempting stay in key, it's probably indie. ;]

This is a nice post. I'd also like to say that FOB and Panic! are /NOT/ emo bands. If anything, they are both far closer to power-pop or pop/rock than anything else. I seriously hate how the word 'emo' is just tossed around amongst the public without any consideration as to what the genre actually is. I really want to start some kind of petition to get FOB removed from the 'Emo' section in RB's genre sorter and placed into the 'Pop/rock' area, where Dead on Arrival belongs.

/steps off of the soap box.

I agree with the OP. Indie just means that a band is signed by an independent record label. The only reason why you should say a band is an Indie band is if you are trying to say that they are not hugely popular. I think labeling any band is dumb and Indie is kind of a dumb label. It's like calling a band classic rock. Its super vague and really should only be used if your making a radio station based on that music.

i consider the strokes more garage rock

and indie wise...six words

sonic youth, dinosaur jr, the pixies
That's what I was thinking.(Regarding The Strokes.)

Isn't Indie what the emo kids want to be called since emo is a pretty malevolent term? I had a disscussion about this a long time ago with a "Indie" kid and she told me that. I dunno, I don't dig "Indie"

The idea that Fall Out Boy and other pop songs are "emo" is simply incorrect. Whomever is responsible for labeling any of the music on RB as emo should be forced to wear a hairshirt for a week (or listen to Fall Out Boy for a week - they're about the same)

If you want emo, listen to Sunny Day Real Estate, The Get-Up Kids, Husker Du, and others.

The term "Indie" is a misnomer. Most indie bands should really be classified under more specific sub-genres like, e.g., Garage Rock Revival (The Hives, Yeah Yeah Yeahs), post-punk revival (Interpol), lo-fi (the Shins), New Prog (Mars Volta), etc...

How is Indie Prog music?

Indie that people would classify as Prog is usually more on the Psychadelic side of Rock than anything.
