View Full Version : A question to those who know Punk

I am looking for some Punk music to give a listen, but I am going to narrow the requirements just a little.
I am looking for some Punk that is similar to the style of the Sex Pistols, Raw, Incredibly pissed, and Nihilistic. I don't want the political punk of the Clash.
So does anyone have any recomendations?

05-25-2007, 11:08 PM
What do you want it to sound like? Like, classic punk like The Sex Pistols, 80s hardcore like Bad Brains, or 90s pop-punk like NOFX?
benjamin
05-26-2007, 02:10 PM
I answered that question in my second paragraph.

I really enjoy punk music and listen to it daily. i would say that political punk is badass and should give it a try, but if thats not your thing then try something fun like operation ivy, or rancid. but it you ever give hardcore punk music like career soldiers or casualties try, just give it a minute and im sure you'll like it.
benjamin
05-27-2007, 01:10 AM
Rancid is pretty political. Really, they are very similar to the Clash. But I like Rancid more than The Clash.
BlingShyne2
05-27-2007, 02:51 AM
Rancid are a bunch of pussies dude.
All these new douches ride around in tour busses selling records and all this other **** that dick wads feed them when they dont even write there own ****.
Sex pistols and violent femmes and those pop-punk-wanna-bes also suck, i mean, who the hell listens to that kind of ****?
Lame ass green spike mohawk ****s. thats who.
You want some punk? Listen to Black Flag, Minor Flag or SSD man, and if you want some current **** check out municipal waste. There the thrash kings of this era.
NOFX is alright, but Wolves in Wolves clothing was really REALLY lame as hell, coming from guys who wrote "Stickin in my eye" and "linoleum", there going the way of green day very fast.
damnfinecat
05-27-2007, 09:37 AM
NOFX went the way of Greenday with their first album :/
Honestly, if you only break it down to stuff that sounds like the Sex Pistols, I'm not going to be able to help you.
benjamin
05-27-2007, 02:26 PM
Why not? I just want angry music without all the politics of The Clash, or the Dead Kennedys, or Anti-Flag.
Boring.
charlieboy123
05-27-2007, 03:35 PM
rancid has been around fools
and if you want real **** dont listen to Nofx
putting Nofx over rancid is basically saying you are ******ed, but Minor THREAT is good. Anti flag can been good but sounds to girly at times
im still saying hardcore **** as in casualties and career soldiers is bad ass

If you want Sex Pistols style stuff, just go to Punk77 (http://www.punk77.co.uk). That will have links, with soundfiles to most UK 77 'style bands. I would suggest X-Ray Spex, The Slits, Eater. However, I would like to also suggest you check out the Hardcore bands from the early eighties, as that really exemplified punk for me. Most 77 bands were art students, and their music is varied. Hardcore was fast, loud and angry. Start with the big names (Black Flag, Minor Threat, Bad Brains) and filter your way through to the more unknown stuff. It's great. I'd tell you to scope out Crust and Grindcore, but I doubt it'd be your thing.

I don't want the political punk of the Clash.
Yeah that's an oxymoron. Punk was created to be political. If you want to get technical anything that isn't in your face about political injustice and the advancement of anarchy (which I don't condone by the way) isn't true Punk. I for one have no problem with any of Punk's many incarnations but if you are just getting into it I would suggest some Agent Orange, Operation Ivy, Rancid, and if you want some light hearted Pop-Punk try anything from Sum 41, blink 182's earlier stuff, and the earlier Green Day. Pshew. That enough for ya? :p
benjamin
06-04-2007, 12:18 PM
How about this, I don't want the extreme left wing and whiny Punk music of bands like The Clash, or even more so, the Dead Kennedy's.
I like the anarchistic music of The Sex Pistols, I like nihilism, where they are just against everything. But I hate the left wing stuff.

I dont consider the clash to be too political.Much of their music described how hard it was growing up in london during the 70's.Back then it was hard to find work and many young people grew disillusioned with what the future could hold.Thats my opinion though if you still feel the same about them thats fine.

God Save the Queen - Caused outrage, was banned by all radio stations and was considered by politians to be a direct attack on the monarchy.
Anarchy in the UK - This song mentions several policital oraganisations of the time, comparing them to the UK (MPLA, UDA and IRA)
Pretty Vacant - Again seen as an attempt to pollute society with its language, Va-cant was sung with emphasis on the 'cant' part, it was said to be sung to sound like '****' (sorry about the language) so Vaaaaaa'****'
Dude, they were very political, and the reason was that at that time the goverment were easy targets, there were strikes galore with the unions seeming running the show, and the pistols reflected this feeling in their songs.

IMO, you can just like how the music sounds and not necessarilly agree with the politics of it. I get what you're saying though when it comes to going all out with the dressing punk thing and all that. Taking on the image kind of declares that you agree with the politics of punk.
Anyways, I'm pretty conservative, but for my money, punk music doesn't get better than the Clash. Their music was well written, and I never found much of their message to be too offensive or controversial or whatever to my sensibilities, whether I agreed with them or not.

Sex Pistols

And punk definitely doesn't get any better than The Clash. If you want something that sounds more punk-ish than London Calling (which I hardly consider punk at all), go with their first self-titled album and Give 'Em Enough Rope.

Punk in the UK grew out of the dissatisfaction with Thatcher-era Britain, and disillusionment with the rock genre as a whole at the time. It was a short-lived movement that spawned a lot of sub-genres of punk. Saying you want Sex Pistols-esque punk without the politics is kind of weird. Most of the punk from that era was politically motivated, whether it was the nihilism displayed by the Pistols, the far-left approach of the Clash, or the far-right Oi! sub-genre. A lot of you need to realize that punk has evolved and spawned a myriad of sub-genres since the mid-late 70s: new-wave, hardcore, grunge, pop-punk, etc to name a few. The Ramones pioneered pop-punk. Blink-182 is synonymous with 90's pop-punk, as is Green Day. Punk is now an umbrella term, as there isn't a lot of punk music that matches the original movement. That being said, I don't know how to help ya, the Sex Pistols were kind of in a class of their own (though correct me if I'm wrong). You'll probably want the likes of Anti-Flag (maybe even the Misfits, good old horror-punk).

If nobody has said No Cash yet, then give them a listen. If you want something raw and angry, that's some of the best you'll get. no need for the extreme cussing BlingShyne2. Minor THREAT by the way. and whats wrong with political punk? almost all good punk bands are political. ALMOST. anyways if you want some real punk listen to black flag, bad brains, dead kennedys, sham 69, the exploited, misfits, redemption 87, D.R.I, The Adicts, The Adolescents, Circle Jerks and if youre kinda into ska then there's no better ska-punk band then Operation Ivy.

YEAH OP IVY!!!
Pre rancid...and better too!
Also Circle Jerks...
lmfao casualties arnt tru punk....i went to a concert...its fun untill u realize that all theyr music is tabbed as 3333---5555----3333----5555 and then all you can do is sit there and respect the punk drummer musicianship
to me grunge sounds a lot like old punk, not the best voice, lyrics with a meaning, simple guitar riffs to me bands like nirvana even tho they are categorized as grunge sound a lot like old punk and to me grunge is punk

A little more specifically, the version of I Fought the Law by The Clash, as the Bobby Fuller Four version (the original) is not exactly the most hardcore thing you'll come across.

I saw a few people here listed Circle Jerks and I would have to agree. It sounds like they would be the band that resembles what you are looking for the closest. I would recommend starting with "Group Sex" by them. Very solid album.

Jeez dude it was 1964. That song rocked back then!

Yep. Both versions are great. The Bobby Fuller Four version was a cover as well - the original actually dates back to 1959 and the Crickets post Buddy Holly (sure you knew that OF). DK also did a notable cover - reworking it into a tale about the infamous Twinkie Defense.
As for the original poster try FEAR. Nobody ever accused Lee Ving of being a pinko leftie, though there seems to be some debate as to whether it was all an act or the real deal for him.

UK Subs.
The Damned.
The Exploited.
Sick of it All (NJ hardcore).
BLACK FLAG.
All of these could give you the Sex Pistols-type thing you're looking for, but with a bit more talent.

When you hear the Crickets version, it sounds like all they did was return a librairy book late. The Clash sound like actual criminals!

Hey, don't make me to be a Bobby Fuller hater, I'm just saying if they followed Minor Threat with some of their songs, there'd be a confused face or two.

Sex Pistols were manufactured and utter garbage. Puppets. Let's put out one record and have it be on a major label. Icons. Right!

It dosent matter if the Sex Pistols were good or not
they werent political they were Nhialists Meaning they sang about nothing but What was wrong with the world
The clash on the other had sang about ideas to help change the world

Just want to let you know you have a great point. But Nihilistic? White Riot was that and more IMHO, though I know there were misunderstandings with that song. I agree the Clash were about positive change in the long run even though they sold out themselves. I am not a fan of either but your views are valid.

I dont think White riot was Nihilistic. it was more about how us white suburban kids Dont do anything we dont riot or care. and how we should take up arms for a cause. I guess you could say that because the line "And nobody wants to GO TO JAIL" Thats the only reason we dont fight anymore? boring ass teenagers. If only we had something to fight for now
Their only Nihilistic song i think would be london calling.
The ice age is coming, the sun is zooming in
Engines stop running and the wheat is growing thin
A nuclear error, but I have no fear
London is drowning-and I live by the river
still some of the most awsome lyrics
I dont think the clash ever sold themselves out even if they went more mainstream they were still the most devoted Band. I meanwhile strummer was being sent to the hospital he wouldent go until he signed every autograph and shook everyones hand

I think as a whole, even though I am not a Clash fan, they are top notch. Influenced more than the Pistols by far and were genuine. The Pistols were the punk rock boy band IMO. McClaren was looking for the next NY Dolls
