The PS2 version of the game will feature "many" of the modes of the 360 and PS3 games, and will also incorporate some all-new gameplay elements.
From the way this is phrased, this sounds like the 360 and PS3 versions are not going to have all of the gameplay elements of the game and that some of them are being reserved for the PS2 for some reason. I hope this is just some poor wording and not the case. I hate when buying a primary developed version of the game (in this case, for next-gen consoles PS3 and 360) doesn't let you do everything in the game. Is this just so PS2 players don't feel as bad about getting a crippled game?
I guess it would be fine if the 360 and PS3 versions were out already, they had another idea that could go into the PS2 version, and then they announced it and put it in. But to state this before the PS3 and 360 versions are completed just has me worried that they're intentionally leaving something out of the PS3 and 360 versions so the PS2 version can have something for itself.

I think you're glossing over the fact that it lists that the game will have "many" of the same gameplay elements as the next-gen versions. The fact that many is quoted means that there will be stuff that won't be available to the PS2 version. These new features are probably just to help the PS2 owners not feel ripped off if something substantial (like...I don't know...online play perhaps) was removed due to limitations or something. Remember, new gameplay mechanics can always be added later for the 360/PS3 versions....PS2 would be SOL.

I realize the new gameplay is to help PS2 users not feel ripped off about their version of Rock Band, but in the process it's going to make many 360 and PS3 users feel ripped off that their "superior" versions don't even have all of the features intended for the game.

I guarantee 100% that when you see the complete gameplay element list for the PS2, you will praise Jesus that you own a 360 or a PS3. If you have to try that hard to find something to be unhappy about, then you're doing well.

Thank you for this greatly useful post. This brought so much to the discussion.

Yeah, I'm sure the 360 and PS3 version will have much more in them. If they announced what was unique to the PS2 version, I wouldn't mind as much. But as of now it's stated as "gameplay elements," which could mean two small things that have little relevance or five large gameplay modes. If they were mostly throwaway things, it would be fine with me. But if there's a couple awesome gameplay features announced exclusively for the PS2 version, I think people getting the 360/PS3 version would be at least a little upset.

I think what they were attempting to say there was that they'd do their best to not have to remove features to "dumb it down" to the PS2 level.
