As far as I can tell, finishing a song at all, on any difficulty, gets you on the leaderboard if there aren't yet 100,000 ranked scores yet.

Most leaderboards don't have 100,000 ranked scores yet.

So it seems like this is a whole lot of actual data about how people play the game that nobody is talking about.

Sadly, the web leaderboards (which I'm getting my information from) only have DLC through December 18, so there's a huge gap there. Nevertheless, some number crunching...

(tl;dr summary: People like playing on guitar and in full bands. Solo players are more likely to play something just for the challenge than bands. There are disproportionately more drummers among PS3 players than Xbox players. Nobody plays solo vocal tour, and nobody likes "Cherry Bomb".)

(Sorry, this post is way too ****ing long.)

INSTRUMENT POPULARITY

I'm looking at guitar, drums, vocals and full-band play.

Generally speaking, on Xbox, there are five to ten times as many people ranked on guitar as on vocals, with drums and band play in the middle. Interestingly, there's a pretty strong pattern of more band players than drum players for core songs and DLC, but WAY more solo drummers than band players for bonus songs. I have no idea why.

Songs that break the pattern of which instruments are played most:

Core songs (normally g > b > d > v)
Welcome Home (d=100k+, b=96000)
Ballroom Blitz (d=100k+, b=68800)
Flirtin With Disaster (d=90600, b=61100)
Green Grass & High Tides (d=100k+, b=43300)

Bonus songs (normally g > d >> b > v)
Nightmare (v=24600, b=16600)
Outside (v=19400, b=13100)

DLC (normally g > d > b > v)
And Justice For All (d=44400, b=25500)
Jukebox Hero (d=33200, b=32900)
Blackened (d=30000, b=19600)
Ride The Lightning (d=29100, b=19800)
Joker & The Thief (d=21900, b=15900)
3's & 7's (d=20500, b=16200)
Sick, Sick, Sick (d=10300, b=9100)

So basically, some of the hardest songs appeal unusually much to solo drummers or unusually little to full bands. Plus I don't know what the deal is with "Juke Box Hero".

Among PS3 owners, the numbers are similar but a little more variable. Drums tend to do much better, and full-band play much worse. There are even 8 songs ("29 Fingers", "Epic", "GGaHT", "Main Offender", "Pleasure (Pleasure)", "Suffragette City", "Vasoline" and "Welcome Home") with more ranked drummers than ranked guitarists, though in several of those cases it may just be that finishing on guitar is harder than finishing on drums.

TOO HARD FOR YOU?

Looking at the PS3 band leaderboards, there's a substantial dropoff as songs get harder. Here's the list, rounded to nearest hundred:

Tiers 1 and 2 all have 100k+ ranked bands.

100k+ Blitzkrieg Bop ** most popular tier 3 song (tied)
100k+ Black Hole Sun ** most popular tier 3 song (tied)
100k+ Wanted Dead or Alive ** most popular tier 4 song (tied)
100k+ Learn to Fly ** most popular tier 4 song (tied)

93800 Sabotage t3
91400 When You Were Young t3
87200 Paranoid ** most popular tier 6 song
78700 Train Kept A Rollin' ** most popular tier 5 song
78300 Are You Gonna Be My Girl t6
74500 The Hand That Feeds t4
70400 Celebrity Skin ** least popular tier 3 song
67500 Orange Crush t4
66600 Dani California t6
54500 Go with the Flow t6
54300 Dead on Arrival t5
53600 Cherub Rock ** most popular tier 8 song
53600 Suffragette City t5
52900 Detroit Rock City ** most popular tier 7 song
51600 Epic t5
51100 Main Offender ** least popular tier 4 song
50500 Highway Star ** most popular tier 9 song
49600 (Don't Fear) The Reaper t7
45900 Foreplay/Long Time t9
43500 Won't Get Fooled Again t9
42400 Electric Version t7
42000 Reptilia t7
41000 Run to the Hills t9
40500 Enter Sandman t8
38900 Vasoline ** least popular tier 7 song
37100 Tom Sawyer t8
34100 Next to You t8
32200 Welcome Home t6
26700 Time We Had bonus tier 3
24500 I'm So Sick bonus tier 3
22100 29 Fingers bonus tier 2
22000 Pleasure (Pleasure) bonus tier 6
20800 Flirtin' with Disaster ** least popular tier 9 song
20800 Ballroom Blitz ** least popular tier 5 song
16100 Green Grass and High Tides ** least popular tier 8 song
12000 Seven bonus tier 2
10300 Timmy & the Lords of the Underworld bonus tier 7
7500 I Get By bonus tier 7
7100 Brainpower bonus tier 6
6900 Day Late, Dollar Short bonus tier 4
6800 Blood Doll bonus tier 4
5100 Nightmare bonus tier 4
4000 Can't Let Go bonus tier 6
3100 Outside bonus tier 7

The effect is more severe on drums, where there are less than a third as many PS3 users who've played a tier 9 song on any difficulty as have played a tier 2 song. So I think the dropoff is not much from people avoiding hard songs-- it's just that you can't play songs you haven't unlocked yet, and it's easier to reach a song in BWT without having played every single easier song.

Also, only four DLC songs have fewer ranked bands on them than "Outside" does. Ouch.

Cool stats!

One thing you should remember is that most PS3 owners only have one guitar as we cannot use the GH guitars. This could explain the lower scores in band mode.
