View Full Version : Chick Bands Rock, Too

GambitOfDesires

So I've been noticing that there really hasn't been a topic for chick bands. Shame, too, 'cause there're so many good ones out there. I know! I'll start my own topic! Now, by "chick band" (and I use the derrogatory term jokingly) I mean a band that's either predominantly female or has a female singer because, as we all know, the singer is usually who people flock towards. So here's my list so far (add as needed). I haven't figured out which songs I'd wanna hear so I'll just put the bands for now:

Crazy Kat
Lacuna Coil
Within Temptation
Save Ferris
The Donnas
Horrorpops
The Vincent Black Shadow
Kittie
Evanescence (yeah, I had to)
Kidneythieves
Dresden Dolls (I know that it's a piano/drum-based band but I'm convinced that there's a way to put 'em in)
Mindless Self Indulgence (ok, so I broke my own rule and put a female guitar band instead of a female singer)
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Tsunami Bomb
Collide
Gore Gore Girls
Flyleaf
Freezepops
Aimee Allen
Alanis Morissette (c'mon, she's God)
A Brokenheart Pro
Angelspit
Zombie Girl (if NIN can get in this game, there's hope for industrial bands everywhere)
Atari Teenage Riot (see above)
Macbeth
Delerium (there's no real chance of them being in this, I'm just being indulgent)
April March

Way to ruin the thread on the first post. Ugh. :p

X-Ray Spex has some great songs that would be fun for this game.

I was just joking...

As for female-led bands/acts I actually like (and aren't mentioned in the original post):

Pat Benatar
Joan Jett and the Blackhearts
Heart
Nightwish

GambitOfDesires
08-22-2007, 05:46 AM
Oh crap, I forgot about Pat and Nightwish... not so much Joan Jett. I've heard a bunch of her songs but GH had the honor of making me hate the idea of anything and everything Joan in a rhythm game.

LavatoryLoveMachine
08-22-2007, 05:46 AM
Alanis shouldnt be there. She is a singer/songwriter, not really rock, you know? Maybe rock according to a record producer, but not to someone that knows better.

And dude, wheres Nightwish? Somebody ELSE had to mention it.

I dont think people flock to lead singers anymore. Today, people are more interested in the created juice behind it, which usually, not always, is the guitarist. Besides, the best bands, people want to see them all. Without one of them things are not the same.

GambitOfDesires
08-22-2007, 05:52 AM
I want Alanis in there for the sole reason to have the satisfaction of knowing that somewhere, when the game comes out, there's some thrash/power/black/grunge/heavy metal fan crooning to "Ironic". That thought makes me happy. Not Joker-happy, but it's up there.

GambitOfDesires
08-22-2007, 05:55 AM
And I'm liking the trend of it being about "the band" and not about "the singer" or "the guitarist". Everyone in a band worked a lot to get to where they are and to be overshadowed by one of your bandmates just sucks (the sadness of the bassists). Oh yeah, and Nightwish. There. Added.

LavatoryLoveMachine
08-22-2007, 05:57 AM
Nah, I think your little sister typed Alanis in.

I like singer/songwriters. I mean, I have to, thats what there is the most of in latin-america. But, I doubt anyone wants to jam Blue Oyster Cult, then play Alanis Morissette.

MrFish
08-22-2007, 06:08 AM
Wow, great list. You win for mentioning Tsunami Bomb. :D MSI also has a chick drummer, besides the guitarist (who is smoking hot). Here's a few more for ya:

Otep
The Distillers
Elastica
The Breeders
Hole

GambitOfDesires
08-23-2007, 04:00 AM
Yeah, my little sister with cowbell action. Anywho, fellow MSI fan, have you heard about their new DVD coming out... this month, I think? They're in the studio, too. Thanks for adding more chick bands so how about finding songs by them? I'm still searching for the definitive songs so it might be a while on my end.

MrGrieves

you forgot these:

In This Moment
Walls of Jericho
Midnight Movies
Brazilian Girls
Cat Power
Sleater-Kinney
Blonde Redhead
Camera Obscura

So I have heard. It will almost certainly be worth checking out.

I think I can definitely fill in a few blanks for songs here:

Crazy Kat
Lacuna Coil
Within Temptation
Save Ferris
The Donnas
Horrorpops - Kool Flatttop or Babylou Tattoo
The Vincent Black Shadow
Kittie - In Winter
Evanescence (yeah, I had to)
Kidneythieves - Zerospace
Dresden Dolls (I know that it's a piano/drum-based band but I'm convinced that there's a way to put 'em in)
Mindless Self Indulgence (ok, so I broke my own rule and put a female guitar band instead of a female singer) - Straight to Video
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Maybe Maps?
Tsunami Bomb - Dawn on a Funeral Day
Collide
Gore Gore Girls
Flyleaf - I'm so Sick or Cassie
Freezepop -
Aimee Allen
Alanis Morissette (c'mon, she's God)
A Brokenheart Pro
Angelspit
Zombie Girl (if NIN can get in this game, there's hope for industrial bands everywhere)
Atari Teenage Riot (see above)
Macbeth
Delerium (there's no real chance of them being in this, I'm just being indulgent)
April March
Arch Enemy
Otep - Blood Pigs
The Distillers - Drain the Blood or City of Angels
Elastica - Connection
The Breeders - Cannonball
Hole - Violet!!!!!!
Pat Benatar - Love is a Battlefield

That should be good for a start. There's some of these bands that I haven't heard of, and others I just couldn't think of a good song for. I can't say I see Angelspit or Zombie girl making it into this game (not that it wouldn't be cool), and Freezepop will almost certainly deliver a brand spanking new song for Rock band, most likely as a bonus track. Such is their awesomeness. It wouldn't work for this game, but if you haven't heard Otep, check this out:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fP1ZJBWLdIQ

It's a fan-made video, but presumably it's for the right song (I'm at work, and have no sound). This song scared the crap out of me the first time I heard it, and it totally sounds like the lead singer is possessed.

You forgot Garbage. Both bands have a lot of good songs.

There has been a thread about female singers that also contained a lot of bull**** arguing.

Waaugh! How could I forget Garbage!? I blame work. :P

Actually, I added Arch Enemy above, but I couldn't think of a good song for em. I DID forget Jack-Off Jill, though. Girlscout would be fun to play. I've heard good things about Walls of Jericho. i need to check them out. L7 would be cool. Lunachicks had a few decent songs, too...

if you put save ferris on that list, i dont know how you could not have included dance hall crashers. they own. i am resigned to the fact that they will never be in a music video game, but i have too many of their songs on my ipod.
if it wasnt for the come on eileen cover, i would have been happy with my introducing save ferris cd. but i loved their version of the song so i had to get it means everything. man was i disappointed so many tracks overlapped. it didnt make me like them any less though :)

edit* you just brought back a great memory of a ska show i went to that had save ferris, DHC, and hepcat all on the same bill. they could actually play old school DHC too because hepcat was there for backup. man that was a great day.

Actually, Save Ferris's Come on Eileen cover is the only song I've heard by them. i'll have to raid youtube when I get home.

i dont know how much youll be able to find on youtube. i dont even remember seeing any type of music video from save ferris. but if you do have a chance. just look up songs from the introducing save ferris ep or it means everything album. theyre real catchy poppy tunes.

youll probably have better luck finding dance hall crashers on youtube as they produced a handful of videos. i actually think they're well suited to be in rockband had they had a mainstream hit. but since theyre pretty much done, and no one really knows them unless theyre ska fans or from the west coast (or hawaii) id be surprised to see their music in a game.
although they're in the ska genre because of their early days, they dumped the horns and changed to power chords, nifty guitar solos, with fast ska picking for a more rockish sound that still had ska flavor.

*edit* ha i just did a quick youtube search and save ferris landed a lot of matches. and dance hall crashers only had two pages. i guess i underestimated save ferris' popularity. man im gonna need to dig through my save ferris collection now. when i did the youtube search i saw a link for "goodbye" that was another song that satisfied my purchase of it means everything. thank you OP for making me go back to old music

The sex of the person on instruments doesn't matter, but in terms of singing I prefer male singers mostly. There are female singers I really like though. Heart is great, and the female singer of Jefferson Airplane is great too. It seems a lot of modern female/female led bands seem to really emphasise the fact that their female though.

i hear you bro, its when they use the "omg i'm a woman and i'm hXc" gimmick that i lose respect. and frankly idc if its a d00d or a woman. two of my favorite bands have frontwomen (bjork and paatos) but obviously i like male vox more since they're pretty much the "standard" for most rock

Here's a few more:

Scarling and Jack Off Jill: Already mentioned, but worth noting again.
Babes In Toyland
The Sounds
Bikini Kill
7 Year B*tch
Brassy
PJ Harvey
Salt
Rasputina

It would be nice to have at least ONE female fronted song in the game.

As far as female fronted bands go, Be Your Own Pet would be at the top of my wishlist. Bicycle, Bicycle, You Are My Bicycle would be so fun to play. In fact, pretty much everything they've ever done would be awesome. I'd love to see their selftitled album as DLC, but I don't see it happening. :(

Is it me, or are there much more female bands with female specific band names? I especially hate when they have the word "b*tch in their band name. Most male bands seem to have nonsexual names. I know there are exceptions, but I'm talking in overall percentage.

And it seems when they do it, they're more just naming their band, and less trying to get attention, this is probably just me. I also think that because there are totally natural sounding female band names.

Not counting bands named after the lead singer of course.

I hate it how girl bands tend to be blatant about being girls, too. I also think that the song should dictate the singer. I mean, if a song works better if a woman sings it then let a woman sing it and vice versa. I can't tell you how many of these songs I hear sung by, from what I can tell, castrated men would sound so much better if the band kicked-out the lead singer and brought in a woman. But there're a few male-led bands that go so far in their femal-sounding voice that it becomes tolerable (see Kill Hannah, Coheed and Cambria, and Silversun Pickups). But barking isn't tolerable in any way, shape, or form.

Well not all bands do that, X Ray Spex was probably a cool band which is why they didn't. But I see bunches of female bands that put it in your face that they are female.

Some "chick" input:

I am enamored with this game and have been anxiously awaiting its release since the first mention of it, but yes, I strongly crave more female-type songs.

When I played it at PAX, they had a section called something like "pop" (which is where the weezer song was - I like weezer, but they so aren't rock), so I don't see any reason why a huge selection of female-sung songs can't go there if they aren't "rock" enough. I'm a singer (though I'll probably play the drums some also), and it's a lot easier to get into a song that I know and I tend to know the girl songs more than others. I think something like 90% of the female population has at one point wanted to be the lead singer of a "band." Even the guys I know who like to sing tend to do the more "girly"/pop type stuff. Add the songs that we like to sing and suddenly the game will appeal to an even broader group of people.

I'm sure MTV already knows this of course, and its on their roadmap. I notice one Garbage song (I think I'm paranoid) has already been added to the songlist (I would have picked "I'm only happy when it rains," myself, but oh well).

So, other artists/groups that are either female lead singers, or that I would just like to sing, that I don't think have been mentioned on this thread:

Avril
Cranberries
Aqua
Madonna
Jewel (though I think only her newest stuff would work)
Kelly Clarkson
Natalie Imbruglia
Michelle Branch
Ace of Base
Expose
More Freezepop (b/c one just isn't enough)

Everclear
America
Billy Joel
Bryan Adams
Eagles
Marcy Playground
Queen
They Might Be Giants
Savage Garden
Goo Goo Dolls

And it would really make my day if I could do stuff from "Jem and the Holograms."

As much as I would enjoy Evanescence... It'd be impossible to make them challenging, lol. I'm all for getting chick bands, though, you just have to remember the playability of the songs for /all/ the instruments.

There are a lot of good ones out there, though, I must say. Get some Lacuna Coil, Nightwish, Kitty... It'd be nice to hear more female singers, and more fun to laugh at the guys that get stuck with girl parts, and the girls wouldn't get stuck with guy parts as often.

one song by flyleaf but more are welcome. I never heard then before this game but afterwards I went and snagged a bunch of their songs and it made me a fan.

If added as a DLC, I would play Sleater-Kinney's "Entertain" off of the last record appx. 10,000 times, and I would purchase it 1,000 times to ensure that we get more Sleater-Kinney.

Liz Phair would be great, especially her older stuff. Granted, "slight" issue with lyrics being ESRB compliant. ;)

PJ Harvey has some incredible songs, Down by the Water would be great for the huge bass, and a different kind of drum feel.

Any new female-fronted groups would be great, as I need to keep my wife into the game. Other than Freecell, this is the only other game she's had an interest in playing!
