Does it make any difference how a drummer has his cymbals set up??

Sometimes you see someone playing with the cymbals all flat.

Then other times you see drummers playing slanted cymbals.

Does it make a different sound or something?? or is it just the drummer's prefernece to how he likes the cymbals set-up??

Its all personal preference, bro. Most drummers set up for how they are most comfortable, while a few may like the way a certain set up looks. Personally I set up my drums for comfort and ease of play.

Yes, cymbals make a slightly different sound when at a different angle, especially if they are upside down.

It is preference, but I think there's a slight tendency that ride cymbals are more likely to be flat(ish) whereas crash cymbals are more likely to be slanted. Part of this is probably because some musicians use the ride a lot more and need an even surface, whereas the crash is the one you hit when you're looking to turn eyes and make a wide display.

My general rule is to keep everything as close as possible without crowding. A shorter reach can make a big difference. I feel like a more distant reach means exherting more energy which means having a harder time staying in time. You can tire out faster, miss beats, fumble rolls, etc. I don't like my crashes flat because then the stick hits the edge directly and (imo) doesn't offer as good a sound as it does when it's angled a bit. Plus being angled projects the sound away more. Maybe if you played the bells a lot or rode your crashes then it'd be better to have them more flat *shrug*. It mainly comes down to comfort and what lets you play best.
