View Full Version : Non-RB Related: GH3 Guitar Woes

I know this will only involve a fraction of the community, but I figured that it was worth a shot anyways. I've been using the wireless GH3 controller (Xbox 360) to play Rock Band since I despise the RB guitar. My first GH3 controller slowly died within a month of getting it due to a loose neck connector that gradually made the fret buttons less responsive (or would cut out completely). I got a new one through an RMA, but now I'm starting to have the exact same problem with my replacement. Am I the only one having issues with a loose neck/non-responsive buttons? Does a new warranty start with the RMA'd guitar?

Again, sorry for the slightly off-topic, but this is my primary way to play RB and RedOctane is very slow in responding.

This thread would have been best put in the General forum, but it's vaguely RB related so oh-well.

I have a Les Paul that I was using with Rock Band, and it started to work less and less perfect. I even RMA'd it back to RedOctane and got a new one (yay, 6 weeks!). Apparently they've been having a problem with the neck pins making contact as the first thing the service rep told me to do was to exercise the springy pins with my finger and reattach it. I honestly don't know what kind of answer you're expecting to your question, if all of your experiences are that those controllers slowly degrade over time then nothing we can say is going to make that better.

apparently a lot of these controllers have been having issues with the fret buttons randomly failing. this is due to the detachable neck, and the fact that it has some wiggle room.

there are two ways to fix this. a 'high-fi' fix which involves a torx screwdriver and some wiggling of the connector:

and a low-fi fix which simply involves rubber bands and an M3 clip:

it's BS that we should have to fix it, they should have made it work right in the first place. but if you're like me and your guitar worked perfectly fine until AFTER the return-by date expired, and are left with no choice but to do it yourself, these methods should spare you some heart-ache.

i used the rubber band method after my orange button stopped working... it fixed it for the most part. i still have issues now and then, but 95% of the time it's fine.

i wish i could just put the les paul's strum bar on the RB strat. the strat has pretty good fret buttons, but i cannot STAND the strum bar.

My Les Paul worked great for GH3 Expert then Rock Band Expert (TWICE). Haha! :D

Knock wood I havent had any issues with the Les Paul. I can't stand the Strat, everything about just doesnt feel right. The neck, buttons strum bar and the weight. Thank god I waited buying the game until after I tried it so I just picked up the game itself and use the Les with it. I just wish I had the effects switch on the Les.

Whatever happened to the whole pedal ideal that was brought up when they made GH2 for the 360? They put that phone jack on the guitar as an expansion port and nothing ever came of it. A wah pedal would be sweet.

Sorry if what I posted was a little vague on the purpose. Basically, fiddolbrfrho gave me exactly the response I was looking for. I'm definitely going to try that low-fi method, since my guitars too break right at (or after) the return cutoff date.

And basically I wanted to make sure I wasn't the only one destroying my GH3 controllers.

not at all. the neck design is faulty, it happens to most of them eventually with all that sliding back and forth. the best thing to do would probably be to use one of these fixes BEFORE problems arise. if the neck would just stay put the connectors wouldn't get messed up like this in the first place.

it sucks because aside from that one issue the les paul is my favorite guitar controller of all time.

Take a look at my guitar modding thread. There are several links to different types of fixes for this problem. They range from temporary low tech fixes for permanent void your warranty type fixes. Good luck
