View Full Version : I wish HmX would keep an updated Billboard type chart for DLC

There are so many reasons as to why this would be useful information , and I think it would just be neat to see which artists are tearing up the charts in the DLC world.

I agree completely! I'd probably buy some songs I normally wouldn't if I saw a lot of others have and I'd have a better chance of playing it online instead of the original songs I'm really sick of.

Best idea I've ever heard. That way they will see how many horrible songs and packs are out there for download.
And then they'll finally give me some Jackson Five :D

Just because they don't let us in on their sales figures doesn't mean they don't know.
But I agree, I would like to be let in on said sales figures.

The latest magazine of EGM has the top 10 most dowloaded DLC for RB and GH3...

Hell, you don't even need sales numbers, just a ranking would be cool to see. I've been wondering about this for a while, as well.

Not everyone subscribes to EGM. But everyone subscribes to The Interwebz.

Agreed , that's one of the great reasons.
It would just be nice to show people what's really selling in the Marketplace.
Who's the Most Popular Band? , What is the Best Selling Song? , What Genre is selling better? , How fast certain DLC takes off etc
In a week like the 3/11 DLC , With all the hate threads , I'm very curious how many DL's a group like Paramore will get.
With a chart that shows a songs DL success , maybe it would shut up some of the haters who think their taste in music is all that matters.

Wow! Thanks guys. This topic didn't get any love at first due to the 3/11 DLC threads. I thought I was responding to the first guy , but was happy to see others inputs by the time I replied. thanks

Exactly !
And thanks to who mentioned EGM's top 10 , I'll have to check that out.

It would be nice if it could be implemented in the game as well.
Like when you're looking at it , it could have a monthly ranking , and description.
ex: This song was #1 on the DL charts for 2 months , and has gone DLC Platnum. !

Yeah, this is a good idea. I am still trying to decide on Wonderwall, if the song stayed "in the charts" for a while, my choice would be made. As it is, I still can't decide.

Great Idea period.
Nothing else to add. Let's just hope HMX takes note.

I also would imagine Metallica is up there on the list as it was the first , so naturally all of us diehards DL'd it.
But Buddy Holly . . . for the life of me I can't figure it out , but your right.
I see that song on practically everyones list. Don't get me wrong , I love it , but that one just seems to have broke the "DLC complaint barrier" and is just naturally accepted by most players.
There's not many DLC songs you can say that about.

If HMX went by Billboard charts, we'd be receiving R&B and Hip Hop tracks. Thank God that MTV isn't making them select crappy stuff than they already have. I'm not a huge fan of everything released, but there is some good stuff out there. HMX isn't going to release all the greatest rock songs for this game anyways, they eventually will make a sequel.

I think your missing the point of the thread...
The OP wanted a Top 10 chart from Downloads, not want Harmonix to make more Billboard Top 10 chart songs.
BTW, it'd be nice to see the top DLC, so I know what I should buy...

Ty DSTONE , hehe.
Here the EGM list someone mentioned.
ROCK BAND TOP-DOWNLOADED SONGS (as of 1/17/08)
1. Metallica Pack
2. Police Pack
3. Black Sabbath Pack
4. Queens of the Stone Age Pack
5. David Bowie Pack
6. Weezer: Buddy Holly
7. Foreigner: Juke Box Hero
8. CCR: Fortunate Son
9. Knack: My Sharona
10. All America Rejects: Dirty Little Secret
I'll be content if EGM keeps this up , but it would still be nice to have a more updated source considering this is January's news in April's issue.
Looks like the 3 Packs are definitely the popular picks. (though I've yet to be matched up with someone online that has Bowie)
Hope that helps.

Sales figures would be great. Then maybe all the whiners would realize that _______ DLC didn't fail, and was way more popular than they thought.
Honestly, I don't like a lot of the DLC, but I don't expect to like it all. I understand some of the stuff I won't touch is still going to do really well, because people have different tastes. IMHO if they release 200 DLC songs this year and I like 25% thats fantastic.
I'm guessing that if any song has bombed, it's probably Cherry Bomb, but there are probably enough people who downloaded everything (especially those early weeks) to make it worth it for HMX.

AAR at #10. And had only been out for three weeks when that list was done. Shows what a pop hit $0.99 track can do.

Yeah , but to be fair , there was less than 3 months DLC available when the list was made. AAR really didn't have to beat out many other songs for that spot (Cherry Bomb,Action,Brass in Pocket) , and I'm sure most of his other $.99 buddies were right behind him.
Just saying it should be more interesting to see a chart now since there's so many songs to choose from.
I'm also curious to know if they are getting a return on the Greatful Dead pack yet , or if it'd bombing in sales.

Hmmm...
All of them except for #10 and #6 are definitely in the "Classic Rock Hits" category, and Weezer's Buddy Holly absolutely falls in the "Well Known Ear Worms" category...
I guess that maybe those of us not entirely out of our minds drooling crazy about obscure B-sides aren't so much of a "whining minority with narrow tastes in music" after all?
Just sayin', 's all. :)

Okay. There have been multiple threads on this, the most recent of which was yesterday. Just because you think it's a good idea doesnt give you authority to post random comments to keep the topic elevated.
In case you were wondering, there was a pretty detailed post giving reasons for this not happening:
1. It would release trade secret data regarding song selection and consumer preferences to competitors. (For example, the team that is making Guitar Hero: expansion 55: so very tired) People pay focus groups and marketers a lot of money for consumer sales data, its not prudent to just give that away.
2. Fans would hone in on the list and *only* buy top 5/top 10 songs... not giving upstarts, indie bands, and other worthwhile tracks an honest chance. (Not all people, but some folks are downright sheep, and will only buy what's popular)
3. The data could be used to interpret sales figures and other information deemed "private."
4. Minimal to no upside for releasing that information. If there were tangible benefits (sales increases, for example) in releasing that information, they'd do it. As it stands now, where is the benefit?
5. Integrating and displaying millions of DLC purchase records across different console systems is a non-trivial technical challenge.
