No clue but...

"what's the plural of Ox?"

"Oxen"

"what's the plural of Box"

"Boxen"

Who was that comedian, again?

I have read that most of the time its due to some type of graphics chip that gets too hot, melting the sodering causing it to move. Not sure how true that is.

General hardware failure.
It could be caused by any one of many possible things but it is most likely the GPU.
I had an XBox 360 "Elite" that went RRoD 3 days after I purchased it.
I returned it to the retail store for a refund and went out and bought a PS3 which I realize now is what I should have bought in the first place.

If it wasn't for the RRoD, the xbox would be a much better console than the PS3, because the PS3 doesn't have any good games

I am on my 6th Xbox. The 5 preceeding my current one all suffered the RRoD but I had the Gamestop warrantee and they replaced each one for me. Now, Gamestop isn't doing the warrantee anymore so it looks like I'll have to fight MS if this one dies.

I've heard that heating causes it usually. It's pretty much what CM_Drunk posted. The inards of the 360 are packed in so tightly that there's not a whole lot of room for the GPU, which expands a little when it heats up. That tiny bit of expansion moves a few other bits around and causes what the Xbox manual says is a "massive hardware failure". The newer 360s are supposed to have a new chipset that runs cooler and therefore doesn't expand and break things. Here's hoping . . .

CM_Drunk and vicious136 hit it right on...
I still have my launch x360. It has given me the RRoD once, but it was during a lightning storm and the power flickered. Turned it back on and it booted right back up.

Other than that, no issues.
I keep mine vertical on top of my entertainment center. It is connected to a fan stand, but I rarely turn it on.

I recommend that people buy an intercooler (http://www.gamestop.com/search.asp?cookie%5Ftest=1&N=133+161) to help prevent this from happening. They are cheap and can save you a lot of time and money in the long run.

Germaine - Germaine JACKSON! Jackson Five - TITO!!!

Brian, what the he** are you talking about?

Man I love that entire album. I wish I could make his Flipper noise... :)

Also,

"THE BIG YELLOW ONE IS THE SUN. THE BIG YELLOW ONE IS THE SUN"

And,

"Take luck, and care. Take care of the luck... TAKECAREOFIT...TAKETHIEBHGUEHVGHCBABABA!!! :) (paraphrased)

Lastly, I know this is off-topic - but that's ok, right? :)

My dad is going to call MS tomorrow and try and get something out of them.
Our console is one of the first.... So we should be able to get sympathy out of them or SOMETHING

You know it's weird, I have three red rings... BUT it's not in that pattern. my xbox is even horizontal, is it a random thing??

It probably thinks it's on it's side. That sometimes happens when it's on.

There's different kinds of Red Rings...the one pictured is the RRoD, but there's other sequences that mean other things. For example, if all four quadrants are flashing red, it just means your AV cable is unplugged. All you have to do is plug it back in properly, and your 360 is good as new. As long as you don't have the sequence pictured above, it's generally, but I stress the generally, something you can fix without returning it.

Mine went RRoD yesterday morning. Today I came home and turned it on, and it worked. For about 20 minutes. Froze up and RRoD'ed again.

If it ever turns on again, I'm transferring all my game saves to a memory card before I ship it off...

It's an Elite that I bought in August. It's got an intercooler on it, so there's no reason it should be failing. -.-

Just so you know, when you send in your 360, you send just the 360 -- no faceplate, no hard drive, nothing extra. So you can keep all your stuff on your hard drive, as you get to keep your hard drive.

Everytime someone complains about DLC and bashes HMX another 360 is infected with this horrible disease..

I think it's different when horizontal. Just like the lights for connecting the controller. Unless I'm misunderstanding something.

I'm pretty sure this used to be someone's av here,I like it:
